www.cbsatlanta.com/news/20684677/detail.htmlSTONE MOUNTAIN, Ga. -- A Wal-Mart shopper who became so angry about a crying child that he allegedly slapped the girl in the face appeared in court Wednesday. Investigators said the incident happened Monday at the Stone Mountain store on Rockbridge Road. A police report said the man, Roger Stephens, 61, of Stone Mountain, had warned the child’s mother, Sonya Mathews, that if she didn’t quiet down the child, he would do it for her. According to the report, after the mother failed to quiet the girl, Stephens came up to them and slapped the child several times in the face. The report then quotes Stephens as saying, “See, I told you I would shut her up.” Mathews then screamed at Stephens and called for security, the report said. Stephens was stopped by another shopper, according to the report. The girl, identified in the report as Paige Mathews, 2, was not injured, but did suffer some redness in the face. She was treated at the scene and released, the report said. CBS Atlanta spoke with Mathews by phone Wednesday morning. She said she forgives the man who slapped her daughter and says he must have mental issues. Delsey Morone said she'd be the top story at 6 p.m. if someone put his hands on her child. "I would definitely defend my child. It probably would have turned into an altercation between us both," said Morone. Stephens was charged with cruelty with children in the first degree, which is a felony. He is being held in the Gwinnett County Detention Center without bond. I didn't see this posted yet, so if it's a repeat, I am sorry. But, is he a felon, or an upstanding citizen?

If I had a child and he would have slapped her/him, I would have beat the crap out of the man regardless of his age or mental capacity.

He's my hero. I work in retail and I have the urge to do this several times a day. That and berate old ladies and ignorant people. I hate retail.

I'm having a hard time figuring out which side of the fence I'm on here.
On one hand, I've worked in several places where I've been plauged by screaming children and have wanted to punt them past the parking lot. So, to an extent, this guy has done something I've wanted to do for years. On that note, I commend him.
However, if it was my child, A. I wouldn't need someone else to tell me how or when to "keep my baby quiet". and B. If anyone even so much as touched my children without some sort of consent, I'm knocking that mofo back to electronics.

It's amazing that people resort to the fastest, most violent possible method to quiet a child. It's a child, for God's sakes. They cry. Sometimes, telling them to calm down doesn't work. That's just how life is. Deal with it. Resorting to physicality with an infant is absurd, especially when they're a stranger. God help me if someone were to do that to my child because I would lose it. He had no right to put his hands on a 2 year old that wasn't his. I don't applaud him for a second. There are other ways to quiet a child than hitting it. Just learn to deal with an annoyance in your life and move on. .

You can't do that to some random child in a store.

The mom should have been the one doing it.

One version of the story I read said the kid continued to scream even louder. Given that all versions agree that the mom started screaming too, I don't think he solved his problem.

Immediately reminded of this: Win. I read this yesterday, nd found it kinda reprehensible. Going through this myself, being falsely accused of hitting my g/f's 14 month old daughter, by 2 people who have hated the fact that we are together since the first time we were together in 2006, it just made me mad. But this guy actually did it. Made me kinda mad.

Criminal. She was 2. It's not like it was some bratty 9 year old, which is still wrong but I can feel more okay about that because they know better. But a 2 year old. Why not just walk away or go to a different department? It was at walmart, its not like he was stuck there... he could have easily walked over to Electronics or even ing just gone to Target. Utterly ridiculous on his part.

That's a good point too. I'm not saying its okay to put your hands on other people, but its insane to hit a 2 year old, I could atleast understand if they were 9 or older, then atleast it would just be intellectually- disabled, not insane. He should have just left, or gone to a different store. There really is no excuse to hit anyone ever unprovoked.

I hate it when people will not even try to quiet their children in public, but I would never take it into my own hands to physically harm them.
But that said, I still want to scream (like Brian) whenever there are crying children and the parents just ignore it.
But hey, they're not breaking the law by screaming, so whatcha gonna do?
