www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/^ Chart ^hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2009/09/13/tyler-perry-weekend-box-office/Tyler Perry is on fire. The filmmaker’s latest movie, I Can Do Bad All By Myself, burned the rest of the competition by grossing $24 million, according to early estimates by Hollywood.com Box Office. In only five years, Perry has made eight films, five of which debuted at the top of the charts. I Can Do Bad represented the director’s third-largest opening, trailing Madea Goes to Jail, which put away $41 million its first weekend earlier this year, and Madea’s Family Reunion, which tallied $30 million in 2006. Audiences liked what they saw too, as I Can Do Bad, which stars Taraji P. Henson (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as a nightclub singer, earned a solid “A” rating from CinemaScore moviegoers. The post-apocalyptic animated flick 9 took second place with $10.9 million in just 1,661 theaters. The PG-13 toon, which premiered on Wednesday, has cumulatively earned $15.3 million. Third place went to Quentin Tarantino’s sturdy Inglourious Basterds, which dropped only 44 percent in its fourth weekend to capture $6.5 million. The violent WWII pic, which has so far grossed $104.3 million, should pass Pulp Fiction this week to become Tarantino’s highest-grossing movie. Rounding out the top 5 were two holdovers: The Sandra Bullock comedy All About Steve (No. 4 with $5.8 million) and the 3-D horror movie The Final Destination (No. 5 with $5.5 million). The weekend’s two other new releases failed to leave a mark. The college slasher Sorority Row pledged $5.3 million, which was enough for sixth place but far behind the recent openings of The Final Destination ($27.4 million) and Halloween II ($16.3 million). The Kate Beckinsale thriller Whiteout, which is set in Antarctica, froze on arrival with a mere $5.1 million. The single penguin employee in Antarctica’s tourism office won’t be uncorking that bottle of champagne tonight. In limited release, The September Issue — the documentary about Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour — expanded into 111 theaters and grossed $730,000 for a fashionable per-screen average of $6,577. So did anyone see any movies this past weekend? I haven't been to the movies in a while.. So Tyler Perry wins again. 9 did pretty bad as well did Sorority Row and Whiteout. This weekend basically sucked for movies making money.

Seriously, America..........Perry AGAIN?!?
...I just give up on the general moviegoing audience. He's the worst director/producer of our generation. Yet he keeps topping the BO's.

Seriously, who the goes to these Tyler Perry movies? I think his target audience is pretty obvious. He has a built in fan base from the get-go for all of his films.

African Americans, like myself go to see his films. He is an inspiration to many African Americans mainly because he discusses topics that truly do affect blacks.
In all honesty, you can argue that a good movie is a good movie, but different ethnic groups enjoy different things.
I get tired of going to the movies and seeing black actors playing "supoprting roles" all the time. Tyler Perry gives African American actors a chance to display their talent in an innovative way.

I am not black but I went to see the first three Madea movies. I actually liked the 1st two but the last one made me not want to see any of his movies in theaters anymore since it was not even about Madea half of the time. She is the only thing worth watching not some crack whore trying to steal an evil lawyer's man!

Why does everyone hate Tyler Perry's Madea movies so much? They're funny, they have good stories to them, and they're very entertaining. I would like to see his new one and I'm glad to see it at #1.

So Denzel Washington, Forrest Whittaker, Jamie Fox dont mean anything? There are TONS of black actors that get credit for there skill not the color of there skin. Im not trying to start a argument I just think its odd that Tyler Perrys movies are being justified because they are giving black actors a chance? Thats bullcrap. His movies suck plain and simple.. Again thats my opinion and we can both have our own but that statement was just stupid.

I have not seen one TV Spot for this movie...I didn't even know of it's existance. How in the hell did it make that much in one weekend? Does Tyler Perry really have that much of a following?

Let Tyler Perry make his millions of dollars by exploiting blacks and their stereotypes while the rest of the country enjoys well written movies that aren't based on generic ideas that sitcoms wouldn't even touch.

Except for Denzel and Will Smith, black actors tend to play supporting roles, in Tyler Perry's flicks, they don't. Plus, his flicks give opportunities to far more than the black actors. I don't think anyone who hasn't actively studied media or is black truly understands how racist the media is, but here is a great example. You bring up Jamie Foxx. A man who won an Ocar for one of two lead roles he did that year. And so Hollywood decided to truly exploit this man's talent... by casting him as the Token black guy in stealth who dies part way through the movie. But wait, they totally made up for it... by putting him in Jarhead where he was a token black guy... but oh snap, here comes the big break, MIAMI VICE, playing second fiddle to no-talent in my body Colin Farrell. Yeah, I get why Perry's movies are so successful.

Not cause hes black but because I guess he doesnt care. Look at Christopher Walken. Fox was great in Soloist. Sure that might have been the supporting role..but I thought he showed more talent than Downey Jr.

More power to Perry for making his money, but I don't see what his appeal is. I can't help but roll my eyes at the previews for his movies, and TBS shows. Just a lot of "been there, done that" jokes about his obvious target audience.
