Jets | Trade for Browns WR Edwards
Written by Nick Caron, NFLFantasySpot.com
ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the New York Jets acquired WR Braylon Edwards from the Cleveland Browns for an undisclosed package.
What does it mean?
Edwards was held to zero catches for the first time in his career in the Browns’ week four game against the Bengals. He was targeted a handful of times, but dropped one and was really struggling to break away from the secondary.
This trade could be the start of a good thing for the Jets’ offense which has had trouble moving the ball last week against the Saints. Despite having a chronic case of the “dropsies,” Braylon Edwards’ physical talents put him among only a handful of receives in the league. If he can get things clicking with Sanchez, he could revive his career.
Edwards will play immediately, according to Jets’ front office personnel, but he will likely have a learning curve before he gets truly acclimated to the offense and Mark Sanchez throwing to him. Keep in mind that while Mark Sanchez has looked good so far this season, he is still a rookie and is still learning the Jets’ offense
A similar trade to this was made in 2008 when the Lions sent WR Roy Williams to the Cowboys. Williams was utterly useless once he was moved to Dallas and still hasn’t fully “clicked” with quarterback Tony Romo… That’s not to say that this trade can’t work out for the Jets, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind when you’re forecasting the remainder of Edwards’ 2009 fantasy season.
Important Sidenote: Jets WR Chansi Stuckey was sent to the Browns as part of the deal for Edwards and now joins a Browns offense which has scored just two passing touchdowns all season. What little value Stuckey had may be gone now, despite the assumption that he will likely see a fairly decent amount of playing time in the Browns' offense.
