We're a little early, but this is the only day I'll be at my parents house to access the pic gallery this week, so here you go:
WWA 5
Championship Challenge
November 29, 2009
The first WWA event where all four championships were on the line eminated live from the world's most famous arena, Madison Square Garden, and the WWA athletes were out to show the world what they've got to offer. "Championship Challenge" was the most hyped WWA event to date, and it lived up to it!
WWA HEAVYWEIGHT NO. 1 CONTENDERSHIP: Edge def. M.V.P. (12:22)
The night opened up with the number one contender's bout where the victor would face William Regla for the Heavyweight Championship later in the evening. The vicious "Rated R Superstar" entered the ring to a chorus of boos while WWA's self-proclaimed "Most Valuable Player" received a positive ovation. While MVP tried to feed of the crowd, Edge seemed to have a counter for every move in the "Ballin'" athlete's arsenal. Edge finally picked up the victory by avoiding an attempted flapjack by MVP and nailing his adversary with a quick spear for the pinfall.
Backstage, Brent Musberger interviewed Commissioner Dean Malenko. He announced that everyone should stay tuned because before the end of the night, he should have, not one, but two important announcements regarding the future of WWA.
TAG TEAM CHALLENGE: The Hart Dynasty def. The World's Greatest Tag Team (13:24)
The guidelines of WWA do not have anything set for tag team matches, so this would merely stand as an exhibition in the record books -- a battle for pride more than positioning. Both teams received cheers upon entering the arena, but the NYC crowd seemed firmly behind the Hart Dynasty of Tyson Kidd and David Hart Smith during the match, particularly when the "Canadian Bulldog" and the last graduate of the Hart Dungeon hit Haas with the Hart Attack. With the self-proclaimed "World's Greatest Athlete" incapacitated, the "Canadian Bulldog" hit the "Gold Standard" with a running powerslam, which Kidd followed up with a flying elbow drop for the pinfall victory.
INTERDIVISIONAL MATCH: D'Angelo Dinero def. A.J. Styles (10:08)
The lone interdivisional match of the evening pitted two undefeated against each other. A.J. Styles made his way to the ring first to a huge ovation, while Dinero received a more subdued, but largely negative reaction. "The Black Pope" did not let it affect him, taking control of the match earlier and grounding the high-flying offense of "The Phenomenal One." After trading back the advantage throughout the final minutes, Dinero took control and set Styles up for the D'Angelo Express. As he charged the corner, A.J. jumped through the ropes and D'Angelo crashed knees-first into the turnbuckles. Styles then attempted a springboard fist to Dinero, but he caught A.J. in mid-air and pulled him to the ground with knees to his chest (a'la the Codebreaker). Styles laid motionless in the ring as Dinero rolled him up for a pinfall victory.
WWA LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Hurricane Helms def. Colin Delaney (10:57)
The first championship match of the night pitted Colin Delaney in his first live WWA match against the newest member of the Light Heavyweight division, Hurricane Helms. Delaney didn't initially receive a very strong ovation from the crowd, but by taunting the fans at ringside with his title, he quickly earned their ire. Helms received a large pop on his way to the ring, and continued to have the crowd on his side for the match. Helms looked mightily impressive against the champ, using his patented Eye of the Hurricane and flying cross-body for near-falls, but it didn't seem he could keep the champ down. While Delaney finally battled back in a last-ditch effort to retain his title, it was the Hurricane who came out on top, planting Delaney head-first into the mat with the Vertebreaker for a pinfall victory.
Backstage, Commissioner Malenko said it was time for the first of two announcements that would he would be able to make tonight. For the first time ever, WWA will present a show live on pay-per-view in December! WWA's "End of the Line" will air on December 27th and feature four championship matches, and a special "End of the Line" gauntlet match for a future shot at the Pound-for-Pound World Championship! More announcements will come as they are available, but Malenko promised that this will be one that fans do not want to miss.
WWA WELTERWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Christian def. Santino Marella (5:43)
The second championship match of the evening would not go the way of the first if the cocky "Italian Stallion" had anything to say about it, but apparently he didn't. Santino made his way to the ring first to a mixed reaction from the crowd, half of whom felt sorry for him and half was annoyed by him. Marella, wearing a mask to the ring, grabbed the microphone and announced that Christian would not be facing Santino Marella tonight, but actually his superhero alter ego, Santinoman! Before he could make Michael Buffer redo his entrance announcment, Christian made his way to the ring. The first offense of the match came as Christian pulled Santino's mask over his eyes, and he never really recovered. While Christian got in all the offense of the match, "Santinoman" was resilient, not allowing his challenger to take his title. Still, Christian did end up picking up the victory with the Killswitch.
Brent Musberger caught up with the new champion backstage, and Christian said he just gained the championship that was rightfully his. He said Santino's victory at WWA 2 was a fluke, and he proved it tonight. "Maybe, if 'Santinoman' can get serious, he'd have a chance at a rematch."
WWA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Edge def. William Regal (9:34)
While fans were against Edge in the opening match, they hated William Regal even more and got behind the "Rated R Superstar" in this match-up. Edge made his way to the ring to a mixed reaction, but when the champion entered the arena, a chorus of boos filled the arena. While both men battled back and forth for the first few minutes, it became obvious later in the match that Edge was taking firm control. It was then that Regal's associate, Paul Burchill, decided to get involved and took Edge down with the Twisted Sister. Referee James Gibson had no choice but to throw out the match, disqualifying Regal. But Commissioner Malenko would not let the decision stand -- he re-started the match, banning Burchill from ringside! The distraction of Malenko escorting Burchill backstage allowed Edge to regain his composure. As Regal turned around, he immediately nailed him with a spear for the pinfall victory.
Backstage, Commissioner Malenko said that there was one important announcement yet to be made -- at the end of the show.
A video played highlighting the feud between Jack Swagger and Paul Burchill.
WWA POUND-FOR-POUND WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH: Jack Swagger def. Paul Burchill (13:12)
In an effort to prevent any further matches having to be re-done, Commissioner Malenko sent C.M. Punk, Kofi Kingston, Evan Bourne, Lance Storm, Matt Hardy, and John Cena out to the ringside area, preventing anyone from entering from backstage, including William Regal, who tried to accompany his partner to the ring. The security detail proved to be only a momentary distraction for Burchill, who also had the crowd to deal with as they heavily favored the champion. While both men battled it out, hitting their opponent with heavy offense, neither could lock in a finishing maneuver until the very final minutes of regulated time. Burchill seemed to be in firm control as he placed Swagger on the top rope, setting up for an elevated C-4, but the "All-American American" reversed the situation into an elevated Swagger Bomb! The champ rolled over and pinned Burchill for the three count and the victory.
As Swagger celebrated in the ring, he taunted William Regal, telling him to come to the ring, but the former Heavyweight Champ waved his arm at the World Champ, leaving to the back. Swagger continued his celebration until the lights went out in the arena and a video appeared on the video screen, showing clips of a former WWE Undisputed Champion and relaying a simple message -- "Brock Lesnar is coming to WWA." The athletes at ringside looked shocked, but Swagger stood in the ring with a smile on his face, nodding his head in approval.
