WWA 7
New Friends, New Foes
Dec. 18, 2009
The latest WWA live event eminated from Nashville, Tenn. in front of a raccous crowd. Joey Styles and Matt Striker were on-hand for commentary as always, as well as WWA's official panel of judges: wrestling legends John "Bradshaw" Layfield, "The American Dream" Dusty Rhodes, and Jerry "The King" Lawler.
WWA "END OF THE LINE" GAUNTLET QUALIFYING MATCH: Shelton Benjamin def. Tyson Kidd (12:03)
The night's opening match continued a series of qualifiers for the WWA "End of the Line" gauntlet, live on pay-per-view later this month. Like last week's match, the "Gold Standard" and his partner, Charlie Haas, made their way to the ring first to a mixed reaction, followed by a postivie reception of the Hart Dynasty. The mix quickly turned to boos when "The World's Greatest Athlete" Charlie Haas attacked David Hart Smith on the outside, allowing a momentary distraction of Kidd for Benjamin on the inside. Benjamin dominated the match early on, but the speedy Kidd was able to take advantage and hit Benjamin with some of his hard kicks and technical prowess. It came down to Benjamin's ability to hit Kidd with his Paydirt finisher out of nowhere, even with Kidd seemingly on the offense, for the "Gold Standard" to pick up a victory and qualify for the gauntlet match.
The show moved in a more diplomatic direction as Commissioner Malenko, flanked by referees and road agents, entered the ring for the weigh-in and contract signing for the WWA Welterweight Championship match between Christian and D'Angelo Dinero coming up at End of the Line. Christian made his way to the ring first to a huge ovation, weighing in at (+2 pounds). He was followed by "The Black Pope" who received a chorus of boos. Dinero weighed in at (+1 pounds), and quickly grabbed the microphone. He accused Christian of wanting the extra security detail at the podium, assuming he would try to "punk him out" the way Burchill did Swagger last month. Dinero said it wasn't his game, and he planned on proving himself at the pay-per-view. The usually outspoken "Captain Charisma" kept it simple, saying "We'll see what happens," and leaving his actions to do the talking. Christian raised the belt over his head as the two men stared each other down.
LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH: Evan Bourne def. AJ Styles (11:22)
The winner of this match would have the best record in the Light Heavyweight division and become the next in-line for a title shot. "The Phenomenal One" made his way to the ring first, receiving cheers, followed by "Air" Bourne, who had the crowd on their feet cheering him on. This one was easily the match of the night as both men flew around the ring, showing off their high-flying arsenal, but also showed their ability to battle a technical style as well. In the end, A.J. had Bourne set up for the Styles Clash, but at the last minute, he reversed it into a headscissor takedown. Bourne then leaped to his feet and ascended the ropes before hitting Styles with his "Air Bourne" shooting star press for a pinfall victory. As Bourne climbed to his feet, "Hurricane" Helms stood in the entryway, staring down his next opponent. Bourne nods his head and points at Helms, letting him know that he is ready for their match.
Backstage, Jack Swagger approached Edge. He offered his hand, but Edge didn't move. Swagger said he was hoping that there would be no hard feelings after his victory over Edge last week. Edge said that was no worry to him, he was out to revenge. He said Swagger should know what it was like to be laid out on his back with someone else holding up his title. Edge was embarassed last week, and tonight, he gets his revenge.
WWA "END OF THE LINE" GAUNTLET QUALIFYING MATCH: C.M. Punk def. John Cena (10:57)
Despite being between a welterweight and a heavyweight, this match had some heat behind it after C.M. Punk and Chris Jericho confronted John Cena and M.V.P. last week. Cena made his way to the ring first to a mixed reaction from the crowd, followed by Punk, who had the Cena haters on his side, and the Cenation booing him out of the building. Punk used his quick-hitting technical style to his advantage against the slower Cena, but the "Chain Gang Solider" battled back with strength. Both men attempted their finishers early on, hoping to get a quick victory, but neither could pull it off until the closing moments of the match, when Cena was able to wriggle out of the Go 2 Sleep, but Punk grabbed him after a missed clothesline and lifted him up for an extremely quick GTS for the pinfall victory.
The first half of a two-part interview series previewing the Jack Swagger vs. Brock Lesnar World Championship match at End of the Line aired. Brent Musberger sat down with Swagger for an in-depth interview, starting out with Swagger's rookie success. Swagger said he does not consider himself a rookie. He considers himself a champion. Swagger said he has faced the best of the best in WWA, and he sees this as no different. He is undefeated in WWA, and that will not change at End of the Line.
TAG TEAM CHALLENGE: Edge & Jack Swagger vs. William Regal & Vance Archer (No Contest)
This match truly did not get underway before all hell broke loose. Jack Swagger and Edge made their way to the ring together to start the fight, receiving a standing ovation from the crowd. Regal and Archer made their way out to ringside next, but before the match could even get underway, Paul Burchill ran in through the crowd and started assaulting Vance Archer! William Regal tried to escape, but Edge hunted him down and started beating him back and forth through the crowd and around the arena. As Burchill pounded away on Archer in the ring, Swagger left to the back, realizing quickly that the battle was beyond him. Burchill finished off his assault on Archer with the Twisted Sister and then celebrated with his sister, Katie Lea Burchill, who was making her WWA debut.
Styles and Striker run down the "End of the Line" card, as well as preview matches we will see next weeK: Matt Hardy vs. Colin Delaney and The Miz vs. Cody Rhodes in Gauntlet Qualifying matches, as well the official weigh-in for William Regal vs. Edge and the second half of Brent Musberger's interview with Jack Swagger.
WWA "END OF THE LINE" GAUNTLET QUALIFYING MATCH: Chris Jericho def. M.V.P. (9:07)
This match got main event status after it got personal with Jericho first confronting MVP, then slapping him across the face last week. Jericho made his way to the ring first with the crowd firmly against him, followed by M.V.P. who had a mixed reaction, but got the crowd behind him as the match went on. While M.V.P. had the size and power advantage, Jericho was quicker and had his veteran wisdom on his size. Jericho used that to slow down the pace and quiet the crowd, allowing him to actually take control of the match for the final few minutes. He finally sped up the pace, hitting MVP with a step-up enziguri and the Lionsault in succession and then locked his heavyweight opponent into the Walls of Jericho for what would eventually be a submission victory.
Backstage, Edge continued his assault on William Regal, slamming him head-first into a large piece of equipment and then laying him out on a pair of tables. With referees trying to break up the fight, Edge climbed on top of the piece of equipment and leaped onto Regal, smashing both of them through the tables! Commissioner Malenko finally arrived on the scene and called for EMTs as both men were out after the crash.
