WWA's Northern Combat on Fox Sports North & WrestlingFigs.com
Episode #3 - Jan. 20, 2010
Before the opening video aired for WWA-NC on Fox Sports North, a long, white, stretch limo pulled up outside the United Center in Chicago, Ill. The driver stepped out and opened the door, and out walked the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair. The crowd erupted in a fury of "WOOs" as he walked into the arena, wearing his expensive suit. As he walked in, several WWA athletes, as well as Commissioner Dean Malenko welcomed the WCW star to the show.
Northern Combat on FSN opens to the sounds of "Invicible" by Adelita's Way [a.k.a the WWE Superstars theme]. Joey Styles, Brent Musberger, and Jerry "The King" Lawler welcome everyone to the show, running down the events of WWA-NC's "Numbers Game" pay-per-view, including the crowning of three new Champions - Tag Champs Jeri-Show, Light Heavyweight Champ Santino, and Welterweight Champ Jay Roclass. Joey Styles announces that tonight, we will see C.M. Punk vs. Chris Jericho, one-on-one, as well as Randy Orton vs. Kofi Kingston, and the Real Man's Man taking on Ric Flair of WCW fame, but first, we have a main-event caliber opening contest.
HEAVYWEIGHT MATCH: Edge vs. Paul Burchill w/Katie LeaThe former Heavyweight Champion, Edge, made his way to the ring first, looking stark and determined on a night when Brock Lesnar and Jack Swagger would sign a contract for a title match at Wrestlympics -- a match Edge desperately wanted to take part in. Burchill made his way to the ring next, looking nearly as determined as he hoped to snap a losing streak. It simply was not in the stars for Burchill, as the "Rated R Superstar" pummeled Burchill, looking to prove himself worthy of another shot at the Heavyweight or World Championship. It wasn't a squash match by any means: Burchill got his shots in and earned a few near-falls, but there was some sense of destiny throughout the match for Edge. When Edge was able to counter the jackhammer, it looked like it was over for Burchill, as he sent him to the ropes and then to the mat with a spear, but Burchill was able to kick out at the last second. Burchill tried to battle back, but eventually, Edge was able to lock his arms and plant him to the mat with the Edgecution. He then locked him the Edgecator, a modified sharpshooter, and kept Burchill locked in the center of the ring for a submission victory!
Winner via submission: Edge (8:52)
Edge grabbed the microphone after his victory and left the fans with a simple message, "I'm not done yet."

Backstage, Commissioner Dean Malenko welcomed new Light Heavyweight Champion, Santino Marella, and his personal trainer, Beth Phoenix into his office. He congratulated Santino on his victory and then announced that the Light Heavyweight title will officially be replaced with the WWA Cruiserweight Championship as of today. He opened up a briefcase and took out the stylish, new Cruiserweight title and handed it to Santino. The "Italian Stallion" thanked the Commissioner for the multiple opportunites to prove himself, and said he will do the WWA proud as Cruiserweight Champion.
CRUISERWEIGHT MATCH: A.J. Styles vs. Tyson Kidd w/David Hart Smith & Natalya
The Hart Dynasty made their way to the ring first, looking to refocus after a loss in the Tag Team Title tournament last Sunday night. Kidd climbed into the ring as the crowd gave them a mixed reaction. "The Phenomenal One" made his way out and the crowd got on his case immediately, letting him know their disapproval. The sudden turn came from Styles' attack on Evan Bourne after their first-round exit in the tag team title tournament. Tyson Kidd has never had much success in singles action in Northern Combat, and this bout was not much different. Despite having the crowd behind him (or at the very least, against AJ), Kidd was not able to overcome the fierce assault that he faced from the "The Phenomenal" Styles. The onslaught ended with the Styles Clash and a pinfall victory for A.J., who after the match announced that he was next in line for a shot at new-Cruiserweight Champion, Santino Marella.
Winner via pinfall: A.J. Styles (6:38)
Joey, Brent, and King discussed the Wrestylmpics tournament, kicking off in just under two weeks. The whole event will take almost a week, but it will be highlighted by the final night, which will feature the last two rounds of the tournament, including the finals, and every WWA Championship will be on the line! They reminded everyone to check out the tournament brackets on WrestlingFigs.com!

Backstage, Commissioner Malenko talked to Edge in the locker room. "You have a crazed look in your eyes, tonight, Edge. No funny business. I don't know what you're planning, but your time will come. Don't ruin this night." Edge stared forward, and got a sick smile on his face as Malenko walked away.
INTERDIVISIONAL MATCH: Kofi Kingston vs. Randy Orton
The slithery "Viper," Randy Orton made his way down to the ring first with a stoic, uncaring look on his face, and the crowd reacted with boos. The crowd then got to their feet to cheer on Kofi Kingston, the "controlled frenzy" of West Africa. Kingston got into the ring with Orton and battled it out, with a chance at the Wrestlympics tournament on the line for Orton. It became apparent almost immediately that Orton may not actually be interested in fighting Kingston, as he attacked him while sliding into the ring and tried to cheap-shot his way to the victory. As soon as Kingston took the upperhand, Orton's henchman, Cody Rhodes charged to the ring and smacked Kingston, causing a disqualification. Orton and Rhodes continued to beat down Kingston, planting him to the mat with both of their finishing moves.
Winner via disqualification: Kofi Kingston (2:49)
Orton grabbed a microphone and stood over Kingston's body. "Hey Cody, wasn't... wasn't Kofi already in the tournament?" Rhodes nodded his head. "Well, it looks like another spot just opened up." Just as Orton finished his sentence, Lance Storm's music hit over the speakers and the winner of the End of the Line gauntlet ran to the ring with a chair, his head wrapped heavily in bandages after suffering a punt kick by Orton earlier this month. Storm grabbed the microphone. "Orton, a lot of spots are opening up in the tournament. Hopefully NOT Kofi's, but mine just did. Because, Randy, you nor I will be taking part in any tournament. I just talked to Commissioner Malenko, and at Wrestlympics Night 4, it will be you against me, buddy. And I will prove that my last victory was no fluke. I am just better than you." Storm dropped the microphone and checked on Kofi as Orton shook his head in the entryway, looking disgusted with the newest announcement.

Backstage, Ric Flair was getting dressed in his locker room when the Pound-for-Pound World Heavyweight Champ, Brock Lesnar, entered the room. The two men shook hands and Lesnar congratulated Flair on making it back to the big time as WCW champion. Lesnar said he would be rooting for Flair, as he'd like to have a classic champion vs. champion face-off with the legend before he retired. Flair had a few simple words for Lesnar, sending the fans into an uproar, "Just say when, buddy. I'll be there."
TAG TEAM MATCH: Christian & Santino Marella w/Beth Phoenix vs. Jay Roclass & Shane Helms w/Maryse Ouellet
The former superhero, "Hurricane," and WWA's new hot couple, Maryse and Jay Roclass made their way to the ring first, as Maryse continued to wear the Welterweight Championship around her waist as if it were HER championship. The crowd booed them all the way, and sat in anticipation for their opponents' entrance. "Just Close Your Eyes" hit over the speakers and the crowd was on their feet as "Captain Charisma" and the new Cruiserweight champion made their way to the ring, along with Santino's personal trainer, Beth Phoenix. Being the true competitor that he is, Jay Roclass refused to enter the ring so long as Christian was the legal man, stepping off the ring apron whenever "The Hurricane" tried to get a tag in. Finally, with the "Italion Stallion" as the legal man, Roclass entered the ring and put a rather substantial beating on the former Welterweight champ. Eventually, his plan to avoid Christian was broken when Santino got a hot tag, but Roclass was quickly able to take Christian down and tag in Helms. This would eventually lead to his team's downfall though, as Helms tried to set up Christian for the Vertebreaker, but it was reversed, and Christian nailed him with the Killswitch. Roclass stood on the apron and watched as Christian pinned his partner, obviously more focused on staying healthy and keeping his championship then getting involved with Christian in a tag team match.
Winners via pinfall: Christian & Santino Marella (10:26)
As Roclass and Maryse left to the back, Christian grabbed a microphone, cutting his celebration short. He stopped them on the top of the ramp and announced that he had spoken with Commisisoner Malenko, and he will be cashing in his rematch clause against Roclass at Wrestlympics, and he planned on getting the title back around his waist. Roclass nodded his head in approval of the announcement.

As we returned from break, Chris Jericho and Big Show were in the ring, and Jericho was speaking his mind about C.M. Punk. He respects a few things about Punk - his style of ring attire, his Straight Edge lifestyle (and refusal to give in to the hipocrites), and his choice of former tag team partners -- outside of Rob Van Dam. "What I do not respect about C.M. Punk is the fact that he, plain and simple, is a loser. He will never be what Big Show and myself are, and that is why I had to kick him to the curb. It was simple." Punk is quick to interrupt this speech, and he makes his way down to the ring with the crowd cheering him on. He climbs up on the ring apron, waiting for Big Show to leave the ring, and finally our next match is underway.
WELTERWEIGHT MATCH: Chris Jericho vs. C.M. Punk
The first singles match on WWA TV for either of these men in quite some time proved to be an exciting, heated affair which, luckily for the fans, saw no outside interference from Jericho's partner, the Big Show. The two former partners battled it out in a match of technical skill as well as wits and cunning. Each man obviously had the other scouted very well, with multiple reversals and counters shown off throughout the bout. The match would seem to come down to the man who could out-think his opponent, find an opening, and pull off a quick one. The match was anything but quick as the two rivals brawled almost to a time limit draw, but Jericho took control late in the match after Punk attempted his patented high knee in the corner and Jericho slid through the ropes to avoid it. He then grabbed Punk and hit him with the Codebreaker, followed almost immediately by the Lionsault. Jericho then pulled his adversary into the center of the ring and locked in the Walls of Jericho. While Punk struggled, he had no other choice but to tap out to the submission maneuver and name Jericho the victor. Northern Combat's "Savior" climbed out of the ring to celebrate with his tag team partner, but lacked his patented smug grin, knowing that Punk just put him through a war.
Winner via submission: Chris Jericho (12:42)
Backstage, FSN's Anthony LaPanta caught up with the Playmakers, John Cena and M.V.P. In action next, they take on the World's Greatest Tag Team. Cena said he knows they could beat Jeri-Show, if given the chance, and it will come tonight after they defeat the "World's Worst" tag team.

Backstage, Matt Striker is preparing the Real Man's Man for his bout with WCW's Ric Flair tonight. The Man's Man nodded or shook his head based on the questions that Striker asked, despite having a mouth opening in the mask. When Striker asked why he was being so quiet, he pointed to the camera. Striker shoved the cameraman out of the room and closed the door in his face.
TAG TEAM MATCH: Playmakers vs. World's Greatest Tag Team
The World's Greatest Tag Team was in the ring as we returned from break, and "Basic Thuganomics" blasted over the speakers as the Playmakers made their way to the ring. As they did their signature posing in the ring, Cena and MVP were downed to the mat as the World's Greatest Tag Team wasted no time getting the match underway. Haas and Benjamin showed a new ferocity that we had not seen from them in a WWA ring. After dominating much of the early going, the World's Greatest seemed to have fallen victim to another of Cena's classic comebacks, but it was not to be as, despite hitting Haas with an Attitude Adjustment, Cena saw himself cleared from the ring when Benjamin hit him with Pay Dirt. This opened up an avenue for MVP to attempt the Drive-by Kick on Benjamin, but he ducked out of the way and MVP ended up hung up on the ropes. Benjamin grabbed the Ballin' Athlete and rolled him up for a surprising pinfall victory!
Winners via pinfall: World's Greatest Tag Team (10:31)
Backstage, Edge and Ric Flair left the locker room at the same time. Edge asked Flair, "Do you really think THAT will work?" Flair laughed, "Well, they have to honor it, don't they?" Edge nodded his head and both men walkded off in different directions.

SPECIAL CHALLENGE MATCH | MAIN EVENT: The Real Man's Man w/Matt Striker vs. WCW's Ric Flair
The Real Man's Man made his way to the ring first, followed by Lt. Commissioner Striker, who has apparently taken the "newcomer" under his wing. The crowd booed him, perhaps for the obviousness of his disguise, but also perhaps for the mere fact that they didn't like the man under the mask. The crowd erupted in "Woos" once again as the legendary "Nature Boy" Ric Flair made his way to the ring, representing WCW in a special challenge/Wrestlympics preview match. Flair laughed all the way down to the ring as he saw his opponent. Flair grabbed a mirophone and told the Man's Man, "I'm a 60-year-old man in tights, and I don't look half as stupid as you do." The match was, without a doubt, a mat classic. Flair and the Man's Man battled back and forth, in and around the ring, breaking out every move in their arsenal in an attempt to pick up a victory. Sadly, for how intensely impressive the match was throughout the first ten minutes, the match ended with the Man's Man breaking out one of Flair's traditional moves -- a low blow -- followed by the Real Cutter for a pinfall victory. The Man's Man and Striker left to the back together, and Flair sat up in the ring, holding his swimsuit area, and shaking his head, as he got beat at his own game.
Winner via pinfall: Real Man's Man (14:22)
Brock Lesnar and Jack Swagger are shown walking to the ringside area backstage

Brent Musberger stood in the ring as we returned, and he welcomed everyone to the official contract signing and weigh-in for Jack Swagger's World title shot against Brock Lesnar at Wrestlympics! The commissionership of WWA, Dean Malenko and Matt Striker stood in the ring. Musberger announced the competitors down to the ring, first with the champion, Brock Lesnar! "The Real Deal" made his way to the ring and hopped on the scale, weighing in at 275 pounds. He then grabbed the contract and signed it, awaiting the arrival of Swagger. Before the "All-American American" can make his way to the ring, we get a camera shot of backstage - Swagger has been taken out in the back! Edge's theme hits over the speakers. Malenko immediately calls security in to guard the ramp, and he and Striker step out of the ring. As they climbed out, Edge hopped over the crowd barrier and slid into the ring. Brent Musberger notices him, but gets pushed to the ground. Edge grabbed the clipboard off the table with the contract and signed it himself! As Edge leaped out of the ring with the contract, standing on the announce table, Commissioner Malenko climbed back into the ring. He grabbed Brent's microphone. "No, no, no... This isn't happening like this, Edge, we do things the ri--" Malenko is cut off by Lesnar taking the microphone out of his hand. "Edge, you want in so bad? Let's do it again. Triple Threat, you, me, and Swagger. I'll put BOTH titles on the line, and I will walk out, still, the Pound-for-Pound Heavyweight Champion of the World." Malenko nods his head, taking the microphone back. "Well, if the champ wants it, that's what he's going to get - a two falls, triple threat match at Wrestlympics. Brock Lesnar vs. Edge vs. Jack Swagger. But I'm re-writing the contract, NO REMATCHES."
