WORLD WRESTLING ENTERTAINMENT
FRIDAY NIGHT SMACKDOWN
(AIRDATE: JANUARY 30, 2004)
WWE logo appears on screen.
Footage from the Royal Rumble is shown from this past Sunday night focusing on Edge’s big win and Bret Hart retaining his WWE Championship.
Coach: The Verizon Wireless Center here in Washington, D.C. is sold out as we welcome you to Friday Night Smackdown. Thank you for joining us. I’m Jonathan Coachman along with the broadcast journalist Bobby “The Brain” Heenan at ringside. Tonight Brain, we will hear from the winner of the Royal Rumble match, the Rated R Superstar Edge!
Heenan: All the humanoids in the arena will be waiting on baited breath to find out who Edge is going to challenge for WrestleMania including the biggest goober of them all Coach, you!
Coach: Thank you Bobby. Tonight we are also going to find out who the new #1 contender to the Intercontinental Championship is when Matt Hardy takes on Carlito. Yes the current Champion Christian is now a member of Smackdown and he will find out his next challenger right here tonight. Right now however we are about to get things underway inside the ring.
THE MOUNTIE VS. DYNAMITE KID
The two men lock up. Mountie applies the headlock. Kid sends him in. Mountie knocks him down and goes to the ropes. Kid leaps up and over and hiplocks the Mountie.
Coach: What a way to kick off Smackdown here tonight. The Dynamite Kid out of Manchester, England returned to the WWE last Sunday at the Royal Rumble and is in action here tonight against a man who he has had a history with in the Mountie also known as Montreal native Jacques Rougeau.
Heenan: Coach, you weren’t anywhere back when these two had all that bad blood with each other. A lot of it wasn’t public knowledge to the fans, but to the WWE Superstars and all of the crew, there was absolutely a heated rivalry between these two, both stemming from tag team battles between the Bulldogs and the Rougeau’s and some personal issues as well.
Dynamite applies the headlock. Mountie sends him in. Kid knocks him down. Kid goes to the ropes. Mountie leap frogs over and then goes for a monkey flip, but Dynamite blocks it and stomps on the Mountie. He delivers an atomic drop into the corner and then follows up with a clothesline. Dynamite drops an elbow on the Mountie and gets a near fall.
Coach: Dynamite Kid goes for the first pinfall attempt in this contest, but the Mountie is still in this. Both of these men were involved in last Sunday’s Royal Rumble match. Dynamite was in for around twenty minutes and the Mountie was ousted at around ten minutes thanks to CM Punk.
Heenan: Well you know Coach, the Mountie says he always gets his man and I guess that means that maybe CM Punk will get caught down the road.
Kid rams Mountie into the turnbuckle three times in a row and then sends him across. Mountie gets a foot up. Mountie comes out of the corner, but is caught by an arm drag. Kid yanks the Mountie’s arm. Mountie steps through the ropes and Kid releases the hold. They lock back up. Mountie knees Kid and slams him down. The Mountie misses a leg drop and Kid nails him with forearm shots. Dynamite sends him in for a back drop and then connects with two clotheslines. Dynamite hit’s the snap suplex and gets a near fall. Dynamite head-butts the Mountie and nails him with a dropkick. He shoulders him, but the Mountie gets a knee up and then delivers a back breaker. The Mountie pushes Kid into the rope and drills him with a forearm shot to the lower back. Mountie connects with a suplex and then a leg drop for a near fall. The Mountie pounds on Dynamite and tosses him out of the ring. He follows and then kicks Kid and sends him into the ring steps before pushing him back into the ring. Mountie sends him in and nails him with a dropkick. He sends him in again, this time connecting with a spinning side slam fore a near fall. The Mountie slams Kid and goes to the top rope. He comes off with La Bomb De Rougeau, but he misses.
Coach: Nobody was home on that exchange and now the Mountie is in trouble.
Dynamite nails Mountie and chops him. He sends him in, but the Mountie reverses. Kid hit’s a cross body for a near fall. He connects with another for another near fall. Dynamite hiplocks the Mountie and then sling shots him into the corner. Dynamite connects with a German suplex. He goes up top and comes off with the diving head-butt. Dynamite makes the cover and gets the victory.
Coach: The Dynamite Kid is successful upon his return to the WWE and you can bet we will be seeing a lot more of this British Bulldog here on Smackdown. Right now let’s take a look back to this past Sunday’s Royal Rumble and see just how Edge survived fifty-nine other WWE Superstars.
Footage from the Rumble is shown, highlighting Edge’s victory in the 60 man Royal Rumble match.

Torrie Wilson is backstage with John Bradshaw Layfield.
Torrie: JBL welcome to Smackdown. Tonight you are scheduled to go one-on-one with the fast rising Superstar named CM Punk.
JBL: First off it’s great to be here on Smackdown. I conquered Raw and now it’s time to conquer Smackdown. But you see it will be on my terms. JBL doesn’t take orders from anyone. I am highly successful at everything I do and I don’t need to be told to face CM Punk tonight. Punk is not ready to face a Superstar the magnitude of JBL. So tonight CM Punk will face off against my assistant Orlando Jordan. If Punk gets by Jordan, then maybe, just maybe he might get to step into the ring with a superior athlete named John Bradshaw Layfield. CM Punk, I’ll be watching you closely tonight.
Torrie: Thank you JBL.
Coach: Well apparently JBL will not be competing here tonight, but right now we are about to see Rick “The Model” Martel in action against the bizarre one Goldust.
RICK MARTEL VS. GOLDUST
Martel and Goldust lock up. Martel punches, but Goldust blocks and fires back. He nails him with a big right and sends him in. Martel reverses. Goldust kicks Martel and clotheslines him. Goldust misses an elbow and Martel nails him. Martel hammers Goldust and sends him in. Martel connects with a reverse elbow and then plants a knee for a near fall. Martel sends Goldust into the corner and kicks him and then snap mares him over. Martel drops an elbow for a near fall. Martel chops away. Goldust chops back. Goldust sends Martel in and nails him in. He sends him in again and delivers a back drop and then clotheslines him out of the ring.
Coach: These are two very evenly matched Superstars here on Smackdown. Rick Martel, of course a former Tag Team Champion on numerous occasions. Goldust is the son of the American Dream Dusty Rhodes.
Martel pulls Goldust out to the floor and rams his leg on the ring apron. Martel nails Goldust and rams him against the announce table and then rolls back into the ring. Martel does some jumping jacks while Goldust pulls himself back up onto the apron. Martel hooks Goldust and suplexes him back into the ring. He makes the cover, but Goldust kicks out. Martel connects with a dropkick and then a back breaker. Martel goes up top and comes off with a big knee for a near fall. Martel rakes Goldust across the rope and then delivers a back suplex for a near fall.
Heenan: Martel is the aggressor here in this contest. He just may tarnish Goldust.
Martel scoops up Goldust, but he slips out and sends Martel in. Goldust delivers the butt smash and then punches away. He sends him in. Martel reverses. Goldust drops down and delivers the big fist. Goldust splashes down on Martel and gets a two count. Goldust sends Martel in. He ducks under, but gets caught coming back with a power slam for a near fall. Goldust sends Martel in. He reverses, but Goldust reverses again. Martel comes back with a sunset flip, but Goldust gets out and delivers an inverted atomic drop. Goldust sends Martel into the corner. He hooks his legs.
Coach: Goldust may be looking to deliver the Golden Globes here. This isn’t good for Martel.
The referee warns Goldust to get Martel out of the corner. A woman with long blonde hair and a skimpy black outfit shows up at ringside and frees Martel’s legs from the corner. Goldust moves the ref and charges in, but Martel moves and rolls up Goldust with his feet on the rope for leverage and gets a three count.
Coach: Rick Martel has stolen a victory here over Goldust thanks to help from a stunningly attractive woman who has apparently some connection to Martel. Hopefully we can find out who she is.
Heenan: I’m sure you would like to know Coach, but she’s not going to give you the time of day.
Brock Lesnar is shown entering the building and he’s looking for the Big Show.
Coach: Brock Lesnar is in a foul mood after this past Sunday’s Royal Rumble and he is looking for his Tag Team Championship partner the Big Show. What’s going to happen? Don’t go away!

ORLANDO JORDAN VS. CM PUNK
Orlando Jordan is in the ring waiting for Punk to arrive. Instead of Punk, out comes Brock Lesnar. Lesnar hit’s the ring with a microphone. Jordan gets in Lesnar’s face. Lesnar nails Jordan and then gives him the F5.
Heenan: That was not a smart move on the part of Orlando Jordan. You don’t want to mess with Brock Lesnar.
Lesnar: Big Show come on out here and lets’ finalize the end of our partnership. Come on big man. Get down here.
Coach: Lesnar wants Show out here and he’s looking to end their tag team partnership. Let’s see if Show responds.
“Money, money, money…” Ted DiBiase comes out along with Irwin R. Schyster.
DiBiase: Lesnar listen to me. You do not want to interfere with Million Dollar Corporation business. You are a part of this and you won’t get out that easily. You and Big Show are the most unstoppable team in the history of the WWE. You make myself a lot of money and I just can’t let that end. You see Brock, if you purposely break up this team, you will be sued for breach of contract and you will be out on the street. You don’t want that do you? You don’t want to have to see your lifestyle flushed down the toilet with all your future earnings. You and the Big Show will make amends over some miscommunication from the Rumble and you will continue to dominate the WWE. Oh and next week to confirm that you are on board and that the tag team shows their dominance, you and Show will put up the Tag Team Titles in an open challenge. So Brock we’ll you see you next week!
Coach: So apparently Brock Lesnar and the Big Show will team next week and defend their WWE Tag Team Titles thanks to an air-tight contract of sorts that the Million Dollar Man has on Lesnar.
WWE Rewind: Footage highlights CM Punk’s participation in the Royal Rumble match last Sunday.
CM PUNK VS. ROB CONWAY
Coach: Well now that Orlando Jordan has been done in for the night, CM Punk is going to face Rob Conway.
Punk is on the apron as Conway swings at him. Punk slides under and kicks Conway. He delivers a neck breaker and gets a near fall. Punk elbows Conway and then nails him with elbows and back hands. Conway reverses and Punk leaps onto the turnbuckle and comes back with a cross body for a near fall. Punk tackles Conway and gets a near fall. He knocks him down again for another near fall.

Coach: A very decisive win for CM Punk here on Friday Night Smackdown over Rob Conway. Conway could not get out of the gate on this one. A graphic on screen shows Vince McMahon and says “next week.”
Coach: Next week right here on Friday Night Smackdown we will be joined by the Chairman of the WWE, Mr. McMahon.
Heenan: He’s probably going to finally replace you Coach.
Coach: I certainly hope that isn’t the nature of Mr. McMahon’s appearance, but we will find out next Friday Night. Right now the lovely Torrie Wilson is standing by.
Torrie: My guest at this time is Matt Hardy. Matt in just a few moments you will be facing Carlito one-on-one to determine the new number one contender to the Intercontinental Championship.
Matt: That’s right, it is a big opportunity and I am pumped for the chance to grab hold of my first singles championship. I’ve had the Tag Team Title with my brother and now it’s my time to grab the brass ring for myself. Carlito, I am not going to hold back. Matt Hardy will never die!
Christian heads to ringside and sits down with Coach and Heenan.
Coach: We are currently being joined by the reigning Intercontinental Title holder Christian. Thanks for joining us here at ringside.
Christian: The pleasure is all yours. It’s time Captain Charisma brought a little bit of excitement out here for the peeps to enjoy.
INTERNCONTINENTAL #1 CONTENDER ‘S MATCH
CARLITO VS. MATT HARDY[/u]
Carlito and Hardy lock up. Carlito punches Hardy. Hardy fires back. Hardy nails Carlito and rams him into the turnbuckle. He sends Carlito in. Carlito reverses. Hardy gets a foot up, but Carlito ducks and then springboards off the ropes with a reverse elbow and gets a one count. Carlito pounds on Hardy and snap mares him over. Carlito kicks Hardy and drops the leg for a near fall. Carlito suplexes Hardy for another near fall.
Coach: Carlito is in control here in the early going against Matt Hardy. Christian do you have a preference as to who wins this match?
Christian: The fact is, I can beat either of these guys. Carlito kind of pisses me off and I would love to get in there with him. On the other hand, Matt Hardy and myself have a history in tag team competition and it would be interesting to get him one-on-one. I think we could steal the show from anyone if given the opportunity.
Carlito pounds on Hardy. He delivers a big knee lift and then delivers a neck breaker. Carlito goes to the ropes. Hardy side steps sending Carlito over the top, but he hangs on. Hardy nails Carlito on the apron and goes for the Twist of Fate, but Carlito blocks it and snaps Hardy off the rope. Carlito goes up top. He delivers a big dropkick and gets a near fall. Carlito drills Hardy with three elbow drops and goes for a power bomb, but Hardy pushes Carlito into the corner. Hardy charges, but Carlito moves and goes for the Back Stabber, only Hardy blocks it. Carlito moves in, but gets posted in the corner. Hardy delivers a back suplex and then slams him down. Hardy delivers the leg drop off the middle rope and gets a two count.
Heenan: I like the intensity that both of these competitors are bringing to this match and I think Christian you may have a tough time holding on to that Intercontinental Championship when you face Carlito or Matt Hardy.
Christian: I never said defending this title would be easy, but I will retain.
Hardy goes to the ropes. Carlito kicks him and goes to the ropes. Hardy kicks Carlito and delivers the Side Effect for a near fall. Hardy hooks Carlito with a back slide for a near fall. Carlito elbows hardy and then delivers a springboard moonsault for a near fall. Carlito sends Hardy into the corner. Hardy comes out with a sunset flip for a near fall. Hardy connects with the Oklahoma roll for another near fall. Carlito nails Hardy with a dropkick. Carlito uses a jackknife cover, but Hardy gets out. Carlito sets the Back Stabber, but Hardy drops back with force. Hardy quickly nails the Twist of Fate and gets the three count.
Coach: Wow after a back and forth contest, Matt Hardy connects with the Twist of Fate and now Matt Hardy will get a shot at Christian and the Intercontinental Championship.
Christian: Hardy better be ready, because Captain Charisma is all business when it comes to the gold.
Coach: Well Brain I’m headed up to the ring.
Heenan: The biggest ham’n’egger of them all, Jonathan Coachman will find out who Edge will challenge in the main event of WrestleMania XX. We’ll have that answer next!
-Commercial Break-
Royal Rumble Rewind: Edge wins the Royal Rumble match.
Jonathan Coachman is standing in the ring.
Coach: Ladies and gentlemen please welcome the winner of this past Sunday’s sixty man Royal Rumble match. He is the Rated R Superstar Edge!
“On this day I see clearly…” Edge’s music plays as he heads to the ring.
Coach: Edge, first off congratulations on a huge victory at the Royal Rumble. Before we get to your decision as it relates to WrestleMania, I think we need to bring up Randy Orton. This past Sunday during the Rumble match, Randy Orton was never actually eliminated. Orton was sent through the ropes after you speared him and was subsequently injured, but never went over the top to the outside.
Edge: Nothing like ruining what should be a celebration. Yes Randy Orton was technically never eliminated, but Randy Orton could not return to the ring to compete, so therefore there shouldn’t really be any controversy. I mean I didn’t injure Randy Orton. That happened outside the ring. I didn’t tell Randy Orton not to come back to the ring. It was out of my hands. I did what any WWE Superstar would have done. That is to keep going in pursuit of the headline spot, the main event of WrestleMania. You can’t tell me that anyone would have done anything differently.
Heenan: Edge certainly has a point.
Coach: Well Edge, then I guess that leaves me with one thing left to ask you. At WrestleMania XX in Madison Square Garden on March 14, will you challenge either Kurt Angle for the World Heavyweight Championship or Bret “Hit Man” Hart for the WWE Championship?
Edge: Coach, for me it’s real simple. I would like to call out to the ring right now the WWE Champion Bret the Hit Man Hart!
Bret Hart heads to the ring.
Heenan: Here comes the reigning WWE Champion, the Excellence of Execution, Bret Hart.
Edge: Bret, I’ve thought long and hard about who to face at WrestleMania. On one hand you have an Olympic Gold medalist in Kurt Angle as the World Heavyweight Champion. The only Olympic Gold medalist in WWE history. What would it mean for me to unseat Kurt Angle in the main event at WrestleMania? On the other hand, we have you, a Canadian hero. Someone I have looked up to since I was young and who I aspired to be like as a young Canadian who wanted to become a pro wrestler. You don’t grow up in Canada as a wrestling fan without being in envy or in awe of the Hart Family. I want to go to WrestleMania and make history. Bret, my decision is this. It would be my extreme honor and privilege to face my fellow Canadian Bret Hart for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XX.
Bret: Edge, your challenge is made and your challenge is accepted. The Rated R Superstar against the Excellence of Execution. Edge I will see you at WrestleMania!
Hart puts out his hand and Edge shakes it.
Heenan: There you have it folks. Bret Hart vs. Edge for the WWE Title at WrestleMania. We are out of time. Good night from Smackdown.

Carlito then plants Hardy with a DDT and makes the cover. Hardy gets a foot on the rope. Carlito scoops up Hardy, but he slips out and goes for the Twist of Fate, but Carlito shoves him in.
