In December of 2001, World Championship Wrestling had officially been bought out by World Wrestling Entertainment. This was devastating news to the locker room, staff, and the loyal fans of WCW. Something had to be done...
Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, and Jake Roberts are sitting in a conference room with a satellite feed to Peter Ligouri, CEO of FX Networks.
Ligouri: Gentlemen, it's a pleasure to be speaking with all of you.
In unison: Back atcha, sir.
Ligouri: I've been told you guys have a proposition?
Piper: Well sir, we do. As you may have heard, Vince McMahon, CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment has purchased World Championship Wrestling. This news was devastating to all of us, and quite frankly, the four of us, while able to, do not wish to pursue careers in WWE. Mr. McMahon does not know how to use talent.
Hogan: I couldn't have said it better myself, Roddy. Mr. Ligouri, in all fairness, we all saw this coming, minus Mr. Roberts over here, he's just now getting back into the business. We knew McMahon was going to try this, but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I was one of the first people backstage to hear about McMahon's plan to buy us out. I had to make a quick move; I've gotten verbal contracts from many wrestlers, staff, and other personell who will need work now that WCW has went under.
Roberts: Mr. Ligouri, these are people who have kids to feed. Being a wrestler can have it's cons. Trust me, I know. We only know one thing: Wrestling. That's all we've ever done. I've had a rough life, I don't want these kids to be put in the same situation.
Ligouri: What do you propose we do?
Savage: We've really got most of the details ironed out. We've got the talent, we've got the officials. Hell, Hogan has a venue already. We need a TV deal. We just need one night a week, a three hour slot. A live show.
Ligouri: I have to be honest, I've never aired a wrestling show. This sounds like a big risk to take. Do you guys even have a name?
Hogan: The Wrestling Dynasty.
Piper: It's a giant risk, but you can see our figures here. Even in it's dying days WCW was still head to head against WWE. Pay-Per-View buyrates were out the roof. We can do it. Most of our audience will be old WCW fans anyway. There's your ratings. If they like the show, they will buy the Pay-Per-Views. There's your profit. Just give us a shot.
Hogan: We won't let you down, brother. We all know this business. We're veterans.
Ligouri: Gentlemen, you seem like a good bunch of guys. I'll tell ya what. I'm gonna look into this, maybe get some advice from some friends. I'll get back to you on this here in a couple of days. It's been a pleasure speaking with you. I'm sure we can work something out.
All: Thank you Mr. Ligouri.
A few days later, Piper got the call. FX Networks wants to show TWD on Thursdays running from 8 to 11.
THE REST IS HISTORY IN THE MAKING.
