I dont get this Winter Classic. Its like the NHL is trying to add something special to a sport that the majority of people dont really care about. I mean whats really classic about this? You usually have two average to mediocre teams playing in a BASEBALL stadium in the Winter?

And 2008's was played at Ralph Wilson Stadium so It's not always at a baseball stadium. To me it's an awesome tradition of just watching a game outside, the way it started. Started in 03' with the Heritage Classic and I'm glad the NHL made it a yearly tradition. It's just a fun game to watch.

Dont get me wrong, Im not trying to bash it but I mean to call it "The Winter Classic" (which to me is trying to rip off the name of the World Series" is kinda dumb. There has only been what? 3 or 4? Maybe Im not too up to date on hockey but from what I read on it in '03 the teams were 9th and 7th in their conferences respectively. In '08 10th and 2nd (Ill give ya Pitt in that one) and in '09 4th and 2nd. This year the teams are currently 8th and 5th. I dunno outside of Pitt and Detroit (both #2s) it just doesnt sound very impressive. Sounds more like middle of the road low seeded playoff teams to me. They dont even make a rivalry out of it. Why not something like Penguins vs Flyers @ Heinz Field or Rangers vs Devils at Yankee Stadium?
I guess the point Im trying to make is that if you're a hockey fan it sounds great but the average casual sports fan doesnt want to tune in to see Buffalo Sabers take on the Bruins at Fenway. There is nothing "special" about it

And the Super Bowl is only fun if you like football. What's the point of watching two teams in the Super Bowl that aren't even in a home stadium? Hockey fans have more significance to the games than casual fans, yet they get massive ratings showing the appeal to a larger audience. Why are you even complaining? It takes up one day a year and the rest of the time you can pretty much ignore the NHL because NBC's coverage of it sucks.
Also the Winter Classic is fun for all hockey fans typically. I love the Flames, their likelihood of a game in one is slim, but I still love to watch it. It's a fun event and gives hockey fans a fun game to look forward to.
How does this rip off the World Series? The idea of a winter classic is to represent pond hockey played in winter time. It's not a championship nor does the name suggest this prestigious event. It's a "classic" game, just fun and that's it. It may not be the top two teams, but that's what the Stanley Cup is for.

Comparing the winter classic to the level of the super bowl is like comparing ice cream to horse manure. The Super Bowl is the championship game for the NFL. Im not bashing the Stanley Cup, hell I usually watch parts of the finals. I cant imagine hockey getting massive ratings since the majority of games are on what the Outdoor network or Versus? The point i was making about "the winter classic" is that this just comes up 2 years ago but for years and years the World Series has been known as the Fall Classic. Its not a "rip" at the WS its a rip off. There is a difference. The point is either way they make this up to be some special event when in reality its just another game and they play it outdoors. There isnt anything special about it. Make the big game a rivalry I put a few examples in my post above. NHL has been a faltering sport for years. Do something to bring back fans. Do something to make people who only tune in for the Stanley Cup to want to flip the channel. Ive got nothing against hockey but if there is going to be a special event actually make it "special"

I'd hate to break it to all of you, but Yankee Stadium is hosting a Football Bowl Game on Jan 1 and will not ge the Winter Classic. Yet, Pittsburgh and Washington are on tap for 2011 at Heinz Field. They are smoothing out the edges right now. www.post-gazette.com/pg/10087/1046280-61.stm

But a Winter Classic can get the spot before The Football Bowl

I was hoping Anaheim would get a Winter Classic one day. I know they're not a coldweather team, I was just hoping that, in lieu of retro jerseys, they'd wear the green ones from the first movie.

Disney wouldn't allow it, they no longer are associated with the team hence the removal of Mighty.
