UPDATED: FedEx just delivered my Macbook Pro this morning, and I wasn't expecting it. I grabbed the box and opened it up. I found my Macbook Pro inside, polished. It was as clean as it was when I bought it. I read the slip inside, they replaced the entire display and the fan. I was pretty happy. I turn on the Macbook Pro expecting horizontal lines, they were gone! I had left a 'message' on the wallpaper when it left. I used photoshop to make a white wallpaper with black text explaining the problem. Apple did the same back to me apologizing for not getting the problem the first time.
I now love Apple support more than Windows again, and overall, while it did take 2 tries, they got it fixed. My computer is back to it's godly state.
------------------------
I'm going to give a disclaimer first. I'm a 19 year old college student, who's dirt poor because of college.
Anyway. A few years ago, my mom and dad bought me a wonderful Acer Extensa Laptop, which to me was the greatest thing in the world. I'd been on Windows ME since as long as I could remember before I got that laptop. Zoom ahead 3 years, it begins to lose it's touch. It would overheat with ease, programs would lag, it was a mess. I was getting tired of Windows Vista in general. So, I realize I'm going to college and I'm going to need something GREAT.
I've used Apple products before. I own an iPhone that I love, I had an eMac at one point, and I've used iMac's and iBooks throughout high school. I decided, the hardware I wanted in my inventory was the Macbook Pro. I sold some of my collection of figures to save up to buy the Macbook Pro, and when it came in I was the most excited person in the world. To me, it was god's gift to computers. The Illuminated Keyboard, the cinema display, the iSight camera, the smooth interface, being able to run Windows on it should I ever need to. I treated this thing like a baby. It was pristine from day one. It was great. I enjoyed it for...a good 9 months. It lasted about as long as my last relationship...and both ended up with me on the phone asking to patch things up.
The difference between Apple and my ex-girlfriend, was that Apple was willing to try to patch things up. It was the best support I'd ever spoken to. They were English, they knew what was wrong, they were willing to help. I explained that my Macbook Pro's display was suffering from these horizontal lines that are apparently a common problem. Sort of like scan-lines on a televison, I explained. They said no problem, shipped me out a box overnight. I shipped the box back, paid for by Apple. They took a day to repair it and shipped it back my way.
I received the box at aprox 10 AM this morning. I got home, and I was like a little boy on Christmas morning. I opened up the box in front of my parents explaining, YES, I handled this problem. I did something about it, and it was fixed. I notice...hey...my Macbook Pro is already turned on. Alright, no biggy, the battery is nearly full anyway. Then I notice my keyboard is all smudged. The keyboard I tried incredibly hard to keep clean for 9 months, by cleaning it daily. THEN I notice the dirt and spam on the aluminum body, which I've also kept polished. The fan, my once quite Macbook Pro's fan is now able to cool off bacon, if I tried. It's going at mach speed it seems. FINALLY, I notice the dust and little specks of debris in between the keys and stuck in the slot between the screen and the hinge. I was not happy. But I figure, this can all be cleaned, as long as the screen was fixed I was happy.
Then I notice the screen. It appeared to be fixed. They reset it to factory settings, but with a deep blue screen instead of the normal purple Mac OS X Leopard space wallpaper. I switch it over, and what do you ing know. The horizontal lines.
So I go to Apple's Support site because they were pretty damned good to me before, and well, what do you know. My Apple Support Phone Call service expired the day after I originally planned my original repair. So I do the "My product was repaired in the past 90 day's." waiver and they call instantly. I was calm, cool, and collected. I've learned that being rude to support is useless and gets you nowhere, thanks for that AT&T. So after going through the details like I did originally, the support techie says, "We'll get the problem for sure this time, I'm very sorry our technicians didn't get it the first time." I'm fine with this, as long as it's repaired. Then they say "Should we not repair it this time for whatever reason, or we miss the problem, give us another call, and state it's the third time." There shouldn't be a third time.
The fact of the matter is, I paid $1200 for a top of the line Apple Macbook Pro, and I don't feel it's fair for this run of the mill service. Not only was my product WORSE when it came back, it's not even fixed to begin with, and I have to do it all again!
The verdict? I'll let you know when my Macbook Pro comes back again. If it's not fixed, Don't go with Apple. I don't care how great their software was...it's not worth the potential hassle.
You may be asking, how am I communicating and posting this topic. Well, that old laptop I mentioned in the beginning, the Acer Extensa. Well, I gave it a Windows 7 upgraded, and it no longer over heats. I'm now a believe that PC > Mac, and I'm someone who's spent years saying the exact opposite.
TLDR; Apple sucks.
