Okay now I'ma big fan of R. Kelly and was too young to remember his popularity in the 90's. I know he had the most top 40 hits in the 90s and all his albums sold millions. But just how big was his buzz on the music scence, and considering he wrote for Michael Jackson (Jackson s last number 1 hit) and Janet, and so many more. He had I believe I Can Fly which is one of the greatest songs ever. So to those who were around then, how big was R. Kelly's buzz back in the 90's?

Mr. PPV is wrong.
R.Kelly in the 90's was pretty big. Mostly for his baby makin' music. Dude's an R&B king, mostly because of his hits from the that decade. Forget his thug crap from the 00s that no one will remember.
He aslo had arguably one of the biggest R&B hits of the 90s with "I Believe I Can Fly". Say what you want but Space Jam was huge.

He's quite famous, but I'm not really as fan of him, Babyface is for me better than R Kelly.

The two biggest hits I remember him having were tied to two god awful movies. If those are the only two you remember, then you haven't heard much of him.

I only remember "Bump n Grind", "I Believe I Can Fly", and "Gotham City" from his 90s run. But I also grew up with a parent playing James Taylor, Santana, Bruce Springsteen, and Van Morrison. So I'd say I didn't miss out on much, or even got a better deal. Have you ever listened to Moondance? It's awesome.

Fair enough, but you also can't make a fair assessment of his music either. Those were songs that he made FOR people. They're not a true testament to his other work. But I see where you're coming from.

He Was The King Of R&B Back In The 90's. You can't compare one singer to a group. You get different sounds out of four voices than you do with one. I'd say that they were equally impactful in the 90s on the R&B scene.

Ugh, I'm 15, so I'm sure that I wouldn't remember how big R. Kelly was when I was 1 or 2 years old. And hmm seems interesting, in popularity of a singer/rapper today, who would he be compared to? In terms of buzz, popularity and all.

Boyz II Men was the biggest commercial R&B group of the 90s, whereas R. Kelly was near or at the top for the biggest/best solo R&B male performer of the decade.
"I Believe I Can Fly" and his work with Michael Jackson established him as the King of R&B in most people's eyes, but his true fans that listened to each of his albums know that there are too many reasons to count as to why he excelled in the 90s. Most of his great songs wouldn't be considered hits by the charts, but he definitely had a lot to his name.
I would say more of an Usher/Ne-Yo mixture with the influence of Michael Jackson on the pop charts.
