Right, I have recently gotten into Smallville, and I love it, just a great show with great plots and great characters.
And today I saw Superman Returns for 50p brand new, sealed, the works, so I picked it up. Now, my question is, hwat like are the original Superman films, with Reeve, I've only heard good things about the first one, but yea, what do you guys think, is it worth the pick-up?

The first two of the originals are incredibly good (I recommend the Richard Donner cut of #2); 3 and 4 are incredibly bad. Especially 4. It's like the guys writing it had no idea who Superman really was.
FWIW, Superman Returns is my favorite of the bunch, though no Superman television compares to the first 3 seasons of Smallville.

Get yourself the first Superman(extended version) and Superman II(Donner Cut). Two of the best superhero movies ever. Superman 3 & 4 were horrendous.
Reeve is the best Superman there has been. He didn't need to have a sculpted suit or even much of a muscular physique. You know Superman can do pretty much anything, so these movies are about story. So damned good.

Superman 3 & 4 were horrendous. . agreed 100% Donner triumphed against the odds here(DC/WBs constant meddling,Brandos incredibly unprofessional behaviour)and came up trumps. Superman II is one of my all time faves and thats either cut.its amazing to think when you watched the non Donner cut that gene Hackman didnt come back for part II it was all existing footage

I love the first except for the part where he circumvents the rotation of the earth to go back in time... Yeesh. Also, I don't like the Donner cut of 2 because that scene is there again.
2 is my favorite of the movie mostly because Zod is awesome!
3 is fun
4 is trash

As everyone else has been saying, the first 2 are great, definitely check them out. The last 2, stay away from. The 3rd is rife with Richard Pryor mugging for the camera, and the 4th, well, the 4th, that is best explained by on the A.V. Club, in head writer Nathan Rabin's "My Year of Flops" feature... www.avclub.com/articles/its-a-bird-its-a-plane-its-a-franchisekilling-case,2560/ Also, look into Cannon Films, and it's head dudes, Menahem Golan and Yoram "Golden" Globus, that should give a lot of insight as to why exactly the 4th Superman film even exists in the first place. Christopher Reeves I believe wrote #4 of all people.... And he was one of the biggest Superman fans. So Im suprised how bad it was as well. The Third was should of been called "Richard Pryor: The Movie......featuring Superman" The First two are definatley the best, the second movie's directors cut is really good as well. First off, I just have to say this, there's no "S" at the end of "Reeve". I hear that all the time. As far as "Superman" actors, there was the famous TV Superman George Reeves, perhaps his having played the Man of Steel and the later similarly named actor playing Superman in the films kinda causes that confusion. Second, he didn't "write" it per-say , he had script input, but it wasn't all him. According to the the A.V. Club article I linked to, his having script input (and in essence, a writing credit) and Cannon Films agreeing to fund another project of Reeve's is what got him to sign onto the film. There was a lot going on behind the scenes of the movie that made it the monstrosity that it was. -CMD

I love Golan-Globus, but they should have never tried to make ambitious films like Superman... Add to that the fact that Lifeforce when insanely over budget and they had to siphon millions away from Superman.
They went out of business a few years late, which is sad. they could have been as awesome as AIP with their B movies had they not tried to do more. Although they did have some really awesome B movies.

i love superhero films, tv and comics but personally i never liked any of the superman movies at all. I found the characters to lack depth, the stories dull, predictable and not very creative, and i thought most of the acting was bad too. i know i'm in the minority though. and i do recognise that the superman movies were very important in establishing superhero movies as a genre and paving the way for burton's batman films all the way through to the dark knight and iron man today.
as far as superman media goes, my favorite adaptation is Lois and Clark, followed by Smallville, followed by Superman The Animated Series. But yeh... I can't stand any of the films.
