How NWA-TNA came to be
On March 31st, 2001 Bob Ryder, Jeff Jarrett and Jerry Jarrett went on a fishing trip discussing what will happen now that the WWE has a monopoly on the wrestling industry. They discussed how a prominent wrestling company in WCW had been to such great heights just four years ago and now the company is out of business. With two of the three “top” wrestling companies out of business Bob Ryder believed that many wrestling stations will not even look at putting wrestling on their station as it would hurt their stations business and ratings overall. Ryder thought out loud that a wrestling company wouldn’t need a television deal. Rather, a wrestling company should just go straight to pay per view. Ryder and Jerry Jarrett seemed to think of it as just “talk”, but Jeff Jarrett really began to think about the suggestions Ryder had mentioned. Jeff was wondering “would a wrestling company work just on pay per view?”.
A few weeks later, Jeff Jarrett called up Bob Ryder and asked him about his thoughts on actually producing a wrestling show just for pay per view. Ryder didn’t know what Jarrett was talking about until Jarrett reminded Ryder of their discussion during the fishing trip. Ryder tried to assure Jarrett that he was just “shooting the poop” but Jarrett dismissed that and said that he wants to make those ideas into reality. After several moments of trying to get Ryder on board, Ryder gave in and told Jarrett that this was a crazy idea, but it could just work. Jeff was able to convince his father as well to get involved with the project as Jerry Jarrett has always had a “wrestling mind”.
Jeff, Jerry and Bob set up a meeting with In Demand executives to attempt to work out deal to air their wrestling program on the service. The idea was that the wrestling program would be a weekly show on the pay channel at a reasonable $9.95. The meeting ended up being a success as they pitched the idea of a more risqué product as on pay per view they wouldn’t have any restrictions. The deal was made, with the In Demand getting a pretty big cut out of the buy-rates each week as they had their doubts. Bob, Jeff and Jerry were now on a mission to find both writers and wrestlers to put the product all together.
They focused on the need of writers first. Jeff was thinking of who would be a good fit and he thought of his good friend, Vince Russo. Ryder and Jerry tried to convince Jeff that this was a bad idea but Jeff came up with several reasonable points for Russo to get a chance with the company. Russo made the Attitude Era and is the best writer out on the market. In their company, they will not have any restrictions or “suites” to prevent Russo from creating captivating television. After a long discussion, Jeff was able to convince his partners that it was a good idea to at least try and get Russo.
During a meeting with Vince Russo, it was clear that Russo was not in any mood to return to the wrestling business but Jeff Jarrett continued to mention to Russo that they wouldn’t have AOL people killing their product. It would be all of them coming up with the ideas and wouldn’t have any restrictions. A couple of days later, Russo signed on with the company and asked what was the companies name. Jeff Jarrett didn’t have one. Russo figured as such and told Jarrett that if this is going to be a “risqué product” it should have a different name. Thus, Russo suggested the name TNA, which stood for Total Non-Stop Action but any high school and college kids know that stands for Tits and Ass and that it would be a great way to get that demographic. Jeff Jarrett agreed with that statement.
Also, at this point they needed to associate themselves with the National Wrestling Alliance for more exposure and the unlimited talent that all of those markets have for them. The official name of the company would be NWA-TNA.
When the discussion of rosters came up, Jeff Jarrett was dead set on having the roster consist of mainly young wrestlers with a few veterans mixed in. Vince Russo on the other hand wanted the majority of the roster to be veterans as he found them easier to work with. Also, Russo figured that TNA would grow faster with more well known names. When push came to shove, Jarrett got his way but allowed Russo to make a list of ten veterans he would want on the roster that he could write for and produce good television.
The question now is can TNA compete against WWE?

NWA-TNA News and Notes:
- June 19th, 2002 will mark the beginning of Total Non-Stop Action which has been founded by Jeff Jarrett and his father Jerry Jarrett. Their only source of programming at the moment is a two hour live pay per view telecast taking place every Wednesday for the foreseeable future. It is being reported that Vince Russo and Ed Ferrera are the only writers for TNA as Jeff Jarrett will be the guy they report all their material too.
- TNA has signed several wrestlers to open contracts. Scott Hall, Ken Shamrock, AJ Styles, Curt Hennig , Sabu, Steve Corino and Jerry Lynn are just a few wrestlers scheduled to appear for TNA on a regular basis. Several independent wrestlers that have not yet had mainstream wrestling exposure have also been signed.
- TNA has been in contact with several names that have recently been released by WWE. Those names include Justin Credible, Spike Dudley, Charlie Haas, Shelton Benjamin and Matt Morgan. TNA is said to be very interested in the tag team of Haas and Benjamin along with the potential of Matt Morgan. No word if any of the before mentioned men have been signed.
- TNA is looking to strengthen their tag team ranks in the coming weeks. One of the tag teams talked about being brought in is the famous ECW tag team of Danny Doring and Roadkill. Both men have been wrestling as of late on the east coast independents. Speaking of which, Da Hit Squad consistening of Mafia (Danny Maff) and Monsta Mack have been in talks with TNA about appearing in the company.
- Word is there are going to be at least three surprises taking place on the show. Be sure to tune into the show to see what is up TNA’s sleeve.

National Wrestling Alliance and Total Non-Stop Action presents Weekly PPV #1 Date: 6/19/2002 From: Huntsville, Alabama
A video highlighting the history of the NWA opens the show. Following the video, clips of various TNA talent competing at local NWA shows is shown to give a idea of the talent that TNA has. The clips included AJ Styles, Chris Harris, James Storm and the SAT.
Mike Tenay and Don West welcome everyone to the show and Tenay is clearly very excited to be apart of the new company. Tenay points out that TNA is where the wrestling is the entertainment and that TNA has a great core of young talent with several veterans leading the company into the future. Tenay promises that tonight will be a night that fans will never forget as the first NWA-TNA World Champion will be crowned as previous champion Dan Severn was unable to appear on the show. Don West chimes in and wonders who will come out on top. Tenay mentions that the main event will be a battle royal with twenty wrestlers being involved. West teases that TNA has a few surprises of their sleeves so the fans should get ready for some exciting television!
Jeff Jarrett’s music hits and cuts off Mike Tenay from continuing to talk about the show. Jarrett taunts the fans and quickly grabs a microphone. Jarrett says that tonight TNA will be crowning a World Champion which isn’t necessary. Jarrett believes that the championship should just be awarded to him considering he is the greatest wrestler to live. Jarrett assures the fans that he would be saving all the boys in the back time as he would defeat all of them anyway. Before Jarrett can continue to rant, Scott Hall comes out and gets a pretty good reception. Hall tells Jarrett to shut his mouth and proclaims that tonight Scott Hall will win his first of many World Championships. Hall continues by saying that after his title win everyone in the arena can come to a local bar and have a few drinks with the Bad Guy! Hall gets a good pop but that ends when Steve Corino’s voice is heard as he cuts Hall off. Corino comes out to the ramp way and says that no one wants to see Jeff Jarrett, a Ric Flair wannabe or a alcoholic to win the championship. Corino believes the fans want to see a King as their champion. Corino notes that he has been a NWA World Champion in the past along with being a ECW World Champion. Corino predicts that at the end of the night, Steve Corino will be walking out with the gold. All three men have a stare down to close out the opening segment.
Mike Tenay and Don West promote the opening contest which will see Jerry Lynn taking on AJ Styles and the Amazing Red. They introduce fans to AJ Styles and Amazing Red.
Opening Contest: AJ Styles defeated Jerry Lynn and Amazing Red in 14:35: A fabulous three way dance to kick off the action of the show. All three men connected with their big spots and managed to get the crowd on their feet. Red showcased that he didn’t care about gravity by connecting with a shooting star press from the top to the floor taking out Styles and Lynn. Lynn nearly won the match following a cradle pile driver on Red but Styles broke up the pin with a Spiral Tap. Styles soon connected with the Styles Clash on Lynn to win the match. ***¼
Backstage, Scott Hudson is with Chris Harris and James Storm. Harris talks about himself and Storm being virtually unknown to most of the fans despite being named “America’s Most Wanted” by their fan base in Tennessee. Storm says that they have made it their goal to show the world why they are America’s Most Wanted.
Backstage, Goldylocks is with newcomers Johnny Kashmere and Trent Acid better known as the Backseat Boys. Acid tries to put the moves on Goldylocks saying that he knows Goldylocks is intimidated to be next to such good looking men. Acid forces Goldylocks to touch his abs and he knows Goldylocks just got excited. They get on topic as Kashmere says that he and Acid run the Northeast tag team division and they will do the same in NWA-TNA. Kashmere is convinced that fans are looking at the first TNA World Tag Team Champions.
Second Contest: The Backseat Boys defeated Christian York/Joey Matthews in 7:22: This originally started off as a old school slow paced tag match but that soon changed as York and Matthews connected with a double suicide dive on the Backseat Boys. The turning point of the match saw Kashmere shoving Matthews off the top rope on a attempted moonsault and Matthews crashed to the floor hard. Moments later, the Backseat Boys hit the T-Gimmick on York to win the match. **¼
A video package promoting Monty Brown is aired. A brief background on the football player turned pro wrestler is given to the fans as well.
Third Contest: Monty Brown defeated Lenny Lane in 0:45: A simple squash to show the dominance of Brown. Brown quickly hit a side walk slam and the Pounce to win the contest. DUD
Backstage, Goldylocks is standing with CM Punk, Colt Cabana and Ace Steele. Goldylocks asks for them to introduce themselves but Punk is offended. Punk tells Goldylocks that she and everyone else should know who the Second City Saints are. However, since fans are lazy he will introduce himself. He says all the fans need to know is that himself, Cabana and Steele are better than the fans. The reason being that Punk is drug free and alcohol free. Cabana and Steele are recent converts to the straight edge lifestyle. Cabana showcases his goofy personality by simply saying “Drugs are BAD!” with a goofy smile on his face. Punk introduces Steele who was a heavy drug addict and uses the pain of others to help him cope with the withdrawal. Punk assures Goldylocks that sooner rather than later the Second City Saints will control TNA and everyone will conform to his standards.
Fourth Contest: Low Ki defeated Jimmy Yang in 7:11: The early stages of the match saw Ki just destroy Yang with a series of kicks. Yang managed to avoid a handspring spin kick and connected with a standing hurricanrana and a standing moonsault. Ki was able to super kick Yang and follows up with the Ki Krusher 99 to win the match. **½

Man, I am really shocked to see Double J win the title, but I really like it. A 40 minute gauntlet sounds a little too long though.

Not a bad show. Love that you're using the Saints and the The Backseat Boys. This was the start of the Indy Boom period, so you have a plethora of new talent to use.

Man, I am really shocked to see Double J win the title, but I really like it. A 40 minute gauntlet sounds a little too long though. I might have over done the time, but i figured at roughly two minutes per match of the series, 40 minutes isn't too far fetched.

National Wrestling Alliance and Total Non-Stop Action presents Weekly PPV #2 Date: 6/26/2002 From: Huntsville, Alabama
NWA-TNA opening video
Mike Tenay and Don West welcome everyone to the show. Tenay briefly goes over what happened last week. West talks about this weeks show and how tonight Jeff Jarrett will be defending the NWA-TNA World Heavyweight Championship against… Scott Hall! When the fans hear that they go nuts! Tenay wonders if we will see Scott Steiner after Jarrett used his guitar to screw Steiner out of the championship. Tenay sends it over to Jeremy Borash to start the show.
Opening Contest: Trent Acid defeated Jose Maximo in 6:08: A solid opener to the show saw Maximo diving over the ropes and leaping off the apron taking Acid out with a crossbody and a hurricanrana. Acid was able to stop Maximo dead in his tracks with a big yakuza kick and soon won the contest following a one man T-Gimmick. **¼
Outside the building, we see NWA-TNA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett arriving to the building. Goldylocks tries to talk to him about his upcoming title match with Scott Hall. Before Jarrett can answer though, Scott Steiner pops out from behind a rental moving truck and attacks Jarrett! Steiner tosses Jarrett into cars and pummels Jarrett on the concrete. Security runs over and pulls Steiner off of Jarrett which allows Jarrett to grab his championship and run into the building.
Backstage, Johnny Kashmere is celebrating with Trent Acid. America’s Most Wanted come into the ring and laugh at the Backseat Boys. Harris tells them that they will be known as NWA-TNA prominent tag team, not the Backseat Boys. Kashmere tells AMW to bring it on anytime because they will be ready. AMW laugh off the challenge and leave the room.
Second Contest: the Second City Saints (Cabana/Steele) defeated Joey Matthews/Christian York in 9:31: Steele wrestled the majority of the contest and it was clear that Steele is one intense person. Cabana remained on the apron and would over emphasize some of Steele’s moves. Matthews and York were able to connect with stereo slingshot crossbodys and York almost pinned Cabana following a top rope moonsault. Cabana was able to plant York with the Colt 45 and Steele came off the top with a flying head butt to pick up the win. **½
Backstage, Scott Hudson is with Christopher Daniels. Daniels tells Hudson that his goal here in NWA-TNA is to win the top prize. Daniels also mentions that a goal of his is to rid NWA-TNA of all the sinners. Daniels believes that fans need someone to look up to someone to send them the right message. According to Daniels he will be that guy. Daniels finishes off by saying that Christopher Daniels will be respected and idolized.
Mike Tenay is standing in the ring and introduces Monty Brown. Brown gets a rather silent baby face reception but that is to be expected. Tenay talks to Brown about being involved in the NFL and nearly winning a Super Bowl. Brown says that despite having never won the Super Bowl he still considers himself a champion. Brown notes that he is new to the wrestling world but he isn’t new to having to fight his way to the top. He has fought his way to the top throughout his life and that will continue in TNA. Tenay goes to ask another question but is cut off by the sound of Steve Corino’s voice. Corino comes out to the entrance way and tells Brown to save the emotional champion speech. Corino says that Brown is speaking like a true loser. Corino bluntly calls Brown a loser and believes that Brown is trying to convince himself that he doesn’t suck at everything in life. Corino doesn’t believe that Brown can hold his own in wresting and proceeds to challenge Brown to a match next week. Corino wants to show Brown what the King of Old School is capable of doing. Brown has no problem accepting the match and declares that Corino will be feeling the POUNCE!
Don West promotes various NWA shows taking place all over the country.
Third Contest: Ken Shamrock defeated David Young in 1:47: Young gets a few left hands and a snap suplex in but that is about it. Shamrock controls Young with a series of belly to belly suplexs and a DDT. Shamrock is soon able to lock in the ankle lock and Young quickly taps out. * After the match, Shamrock celebrates the win until Curt Hennig comes into the ring and whacks Shamrock over the head with a steel chair. Hennig also has brass knuckles and mounts Shamrock with right hands until Shamrock is busted open. Hennig rolls out of the ring and bails through the crowd as Shamrock gets up screaming like a mad man.
Backstage, Goldylocks is standing with Sonny Siaki. Siaki talks about his upcoming match against Sabu. Siaki says he isn’t intimidated by the scarred up Sabu and says that tonight he is going to outwrestle Sabu. Siaki doesn’t believe that Sabu knows how to wrestle without chairs and tables. Siaki finishes the promo off by saying that he will become a superstar tonight.
A video promoting the main event between Jeff Jarrett and Scott Hall is aired.
Fourth Contest: AJ Styles defeated Sonjay Dutt in 10:19: Dutt got off to a quick start with a springboard head scissors takedown and a wheelbarrow bulldog. Styles was able to gain the upper hand with a discus clothesline and a springboard reverse DDT. Styles blocked a tornado DDT with a exploder suplex and soon hit the Styles Clash to win the match. ***
Backstage, Scott Hudson runs to meet up with Curt Hennig who is trying to leave the building. Hudson asks why Hennig attacked Shamrock moments ago. Hennig says he isn’t impressed by Shamrock and wants to see personally what the big deal is about a guy who punches himself in the face. Hennig tells Hudson that someone who is perfect like himself can beat anyone and Shamrock is included with that statement. Shamrock is heard screaming Hennig’s name and Shamrock runs out into the parking lot. Hennig jumps into a car and at first has trouble starting it but manages to and leaves. Mike Tenay finds it odd that Hennig acts like he wants some of Shamrock but bails from the arena. A bloody Shamrock is left pissed off outside the building.
Fifth Contest: Sabu defeated Sonny Siaki in 8:26: Siaki used his slight speed advantage to control Sabu for a few moments of the match. Siaki showcased a good move arsenal that included a military press slam, a spring board leg drop and a middle rope Samoan Drop! Sabu springs off the middle rope and connects with a spinning leg kick. Sabu was able to hit a top rope hurricanrana and a top rope leg drop to win the match. *** After the match, Sabu celebrates the win. Siaki tried to attack Sabu from behind but failed. Sabu smashed a chair over Siaki’s back to send Siaki to the backstage area.
Backstage, Goldylocks is standing with Ron Killings. Killings talks about how difficult it is for a black man to get recognized in the wrestling business. Killings makes sure to put down the WWE a few times until a newcomer by the name of Chris Harvard (Nowinski) comes into the picture. Harvard tells Killings that the reason “his people” are unable to succeed in this business is because of the lack of their education. Harvard uses Killings as an example. Harvard doesn’t think many promoters would want to market a guy who raps about beating up a woman or using drugs. Harvard believes that Killings lacks any common sense. Killings laughs at Harvard and tells Harvard that he is the one who lacks common sense. Killings proceeds to attack Harvard until security runs over and holds Killings back. Killings screams out to Harvard to watch his back.
A split screen of Jeff Jarrett and Scott Hall making their way to the ring is shown before the main event.
Main Event: Jeff Jarrett defeated Scott Hall to retain the NWA-TNA World Heavyweight Championship in 12:55: Hall met Jarrett on the entrance way and sent Jarrett into the guard railing several times. Hall had control of the contest until Jarrett sends Hall face first into the ring post and shoulder first into the ring steps. Jarrett followed up with a side Russian leg sweep into the guard railing. Jarrett attempts a double axe handle back in the ring but is met in midair with a right hand from Hall. Hall connects with a fall away slam and a top rope back suplex. Late in the match, Hall ducks a guitar shot and breaks the guitar over the ring post. Hall grabs Jarrett and choke slams the champ. Hall goes for the Outsiders Edge but all of a sudden Colt Cabana runs up on the apron and distracts the referee. This allows CM Punk to roll into the ring and tosses beer into Hall’s face! Jarrett grabs a blinded Hall and hits the Stroke! The referee turns around and Jarrett wins the match! **¾ After the match, Jeff Jarrett celebrates his victory as the Second City Saints leave the area. Jarrett continues to celebrate until Scott Steiner runs down to the ring and attacks Jarrett! Steiner ducks a belt shot and power bombs Jarrett! Steiner locks in the Steiner Recliner and Jarrett has passed out! The show comes to an end with Steiner having the Recliner locked in and Jarrett clearly passed out.
End of show.

This is off to a good start already. Jarrett being the first champion is no surprise since he runs the company, but it's still a good choice. I like the inclusion of guys like Trent Acid and Chris Harvard, who are never used in anyone's NWA:TNA 2002 diary. A Hennig/Shamrock feud sounds absolutely great in my eyes, considering how I love both guys. Overall, this is going nicely. I like how you're making the well known guys the star of the show, while still showcasing the younger talents. You're doing it right, in my opinion.

National Wrestling Alliance and Total Non-Stop Action presents Weekly PPV #3 Date: 7/3/2002 From: Nashville, Tennessee
NWA-TNA opening video
Mike Tenay and Don West welcome everyone to NWA-TNA! Tenay quickly promotes some of the matches scheduled to take place on the show. Tenay says that the main event tonight will be one the biggest tag team matches in recent memory. Scott Hall and Scott Steiner will square off against NWA-TNA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Jarrett and the leader of the Second City Saints, CM Punk! West screams in excitement as he is excited to see Scott Steiner get his hands on Jeff Jarrett. Tenay lastly promotes a match between Steve Corino and Monty Brown. West believes that Corino is in for a rude awakening tonight!
NWA representative Bill Behrens makes his way down to the ring to a dead reaction. Behrens stumbles into the ring and grabs a microphone. Behrens attempts to pump up the fans before announcing that he is out here to deliver some big news for NWA-TNA. Behrens says he and his colleagues with the NWA have came to the conclusion that TNA needs a no nonsense commissioner starting tonight. After searching high and low for the perfect fit for the spot Behrens believes he has found the perfect man to fill the position. Behrens describes the man as being a icon and a guy who will not take crap from anyone. Behrens teases announcing who he has selected but stops and declares the new commissioner will be the special referee for the main event tonight! Mike Tenay and Don West wonder who Behrens has brought in to maintain order in NWA-TNA!
Opening Contest: Ron Killings defeated David Young in 6:23: Young managed to get a good amount of offense in which included a hammerlock scoop slam and a butterfly suplex but he couldn’t put Killings away. Killings countered a spine buster attempt with a DDT and connected with a scissors kick to win the bout. **
Backstage, Scott Hudson is with Chris Harvard. Harvard talks about his interaction with Ron Killings last week. Harvard tells Hudson that he is hear in TNA to educate not only the fans but the wrestlers. Harvard is convinced that he can help Killings become a respectable human being and he will do whatever he needs to do to get his point across.
Backstage, a camera catches Scott Hall and Scott Steiner talking about their main event tag match. Nothing is heard from the conversation but they walk of happy.
Second Contest: Jerry Lynn defeated Jimmy Yang in 10:09: A fast pace contest that saw both men take several high risk moves. Lynn knocked Yang off the apron with a springboard dropkick and followed up with a nice suicide dive. Yang held his own with a tornado DDT coming off the apron and planted Lynn on the floor. Late in the match, Yang missed a moonsault off the top rope and Lynn was able to spike Yang with the cradle pile driver moments later. *** After the match, AJ Styles appears at the top of the entrance way nodding in approval.
Backstage, Goldylocks is standing with the “King of Old School” Steve Corino. Corino says he has been hearing people whisper that he has gone after beast. Corino reminds everyone of his accomplishments and how Monty Brown has amounted to nothing in this business. Corino tells Goldylocks that Brown’s muscles will not be enough to defeat Corino and his wrestling knowledge. Corino finishes off he promo by saying that the King will be on top his throne sooner rather than later.
CM Punk, Colt Cabana and Ace Steele make their way down to the ring to a pretty good heel reaction. Punk ignores the fans yelling at him and enters the ring with a smirk on his face. Punk points at the fans and laughs at a few of them. Punk says that himself and his friends knew that they needed to make a name for themselves quickly in TNA to survive. Punk figured the best way to make a name for themselves would by going after one of the top dogs in the company. Punk tells the fans that he is straight edge, which means he doesn’t drink beer, use drugs, or use anything that would harm his body. Considering all that Punk says that he had been waiting a long time to inflict physical pain on Scott Hall. Punk believes that Scott Hall is everything wrong with the wrestling business and that Hall needs to be taken out before he influences anymore wrestlers or fans to go down his same road of self destruction. Before Punk can continue Scott Hall’s music hits and Hall comes out to a good reaction. Hall insults Punk by saying he doesn’t have any idea who the hell he is or who his buddies are but he doesn’t care. Hall has a rather serious tone when talking about the Second City Saints costing him his first World Championship last week. Hall simply tells them that they made the biggest mistake of their life! Scott Hall makes his way down to the ring with the Second City Saints daring Hall to enter the ring. Hall stops and points to the backstage area where his buddy Scott Steiner comes out with a lead pipe! Steiner and Hall storm the ring but the Second City Saints bail to the floor complaining about the pipe. Hall and Steiner play to the fans to close out the segment.
Mike Tenay and Don West hype up the rest of the show and a few NWA shows happening all over the country.
Third Contest: Steve Corino defeated Monty Brown in 13:47: Brown used his strength advantaged early on to toss Corino around. Brown displayed a few power moves such as a running power slam, military press slam and a fall away slam. Corino avoided the Pounce and Brown went hard shoulder first into a corner. Corino managed to nail Brown with a super kick but Brown showed his resilience and kicked out! After several more minutes of back and forth action, Corino snuck out the win by nailing Brown with brass knuckles and used the ropes for leverage on the pin attempt. **½ After the match, Corino bragged that his wrestling intelligence prevailed just like he knew it would.
Backstage, Scott Hudson is standing with Christopher Daniels, Elix Skipper and Low Ki. Daniels tells Hudson that he has found two other guys who have not been respected throughout their wrestling careers. Daniels says that Skipper was made out to be a joke in WCW while Low Ki isn’t given the proper respect despite being a star in Japan. Daniels announces that the three of them have formed together and have the common goal of becoming the most feared group of men in NWA-TNA. Ki finishes off the promo by saying “we aren’t asking for your respect, we are demanding it”.
