STAMFORD, Conn. – Not so coincidently after President Obama’s visit to Connecticut this past weekend and on the eve of the midterm elections, WWE is being threatened by the U.S. Department of Justice of the Obama Administration with potential criminal activity for distributing WWE T-shirts near select polling stations tomorrow on Election Day.
“This is clearly heavy-handed bullying from big government and would appear to be desperate political activity in closely contested elections in Connecticut,” said Vince McMahon, Chairman and CEO World Wrestling Entertainment. “This is consistent with some Attorney Generals’ tactics that threaten litigation for political gain.”
Under this ambiguous threat of legal action by the U.S. Department of Justice, WWE has reluctantly decided not to give away WWE merchandise near select polling stations tomorrow.
The controversy began with Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz’s directive stating “if poll workers feel like the wearing of WWE paraphernalia is in any way interfering with the voting process, they can ask the individual to cover it up or come back with something else on.” The directive was ultimately overturned by a Federal Judge last week. Subsequently, to celebrate the victory of restoring voters’ rights, WWE had planned to give away WWE merchandise at select polls to anyone regardless of political affiliation or whether they intended to vote.

The whole thing was stupid in the first place. The people who wear WWE shirts have just as much of a right to wear it as someone who walks into a polling place wearing a t-shirt in support of her opponent. Especially since the WWE shirt isn't technically a direct reference to her campaign.

I'm going to be so happy when Linda fails to get elected so we can stop hearing about this political crap.

The people who wear WWE shirts have just as much of a right to wear it as someone who walks into a polling place wearing a t-shirt in support of her opponent. Especially since the WWE shirt isn't technically a direct reference to her campaign. You can't do that. You aren't allowed to wear stuff promoting one candidate inside the polling place. So people wearing stuff promoting Linda's opponent would not have had the right to wear it. That's why this was a big deal, because people said that WWE merch was supporting Linda. That's why there was a fight over it, and the WWE won.

WWE has every right to do what they did, Linda's opponents brought them into this - not Linda nor themselves. I wish politicians actually gave a about being what they are about, and letting that be their message, rather than attacking the Hell out of each other for gain.

Why do I have the feeling we'll be seeing something to do with this on Raw tonight?

The giving away free merchandise was kind of an unnecessary ' you' by WWE at the government.

The Department of Justice has recently received information indicating that your client, World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), might be providing or planning to provide free merchandise to voters at polling places. However, the available information also indicates that, if this practice is actually planned or occurring, it is open and notorious. Accordingly, this letter is to advise you that WWE might be operating in ignorance of applicable federeal criminal law, and to notify you of that law.
Specifically, Section 1973i (c) of Titale 42 of the United States Code makes it a federal offense to pay or offer to pay an individual a thing of value for voting. Violations of Section 1973i (c) is punishable by imprisonment up to five years and a fine not to exceed $250,000. Please note the Department's understanding that this statute prohibits a person from providing a thing of value--such as clothing--in return for an individual's participation in the voting process.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Richard C. Pilger
Director
Election Crimes Branch
That's the letter they received today.

What did he expect? Seriously? If anyone finds sympathy for Vince and WWE at this time, they are as insane as he is. He has been pushing this for weeks now, culminating with that ridiculous lawsuit. I am actually surprised it took this long for the government to push him back a little bit.
Now they are saying they are being "bullied"? Give me a break. They are wearing the victim card out in this election. When Linda loses tomorrow, it will turn into "She had no chance, what with the big bad government keeping her down!", which is a joke.

How can they stopped if they are 75 feet or more from polls? As long as they are not telling people who to vote for, I don't see how they can be stopped from giving out merch.
