On my long drive home from my dorm from Thanksgiving break I was listening to Pink Floyd's The Wall and it's political comments concerning the similarity of a facist party and a rock band got me to thinking about how CM Punk's cult character didn't even survive a full 12 month year and how I thought it was a shame he didn't get more to sink his teeth into. And then I started formulating my ideas and this is what I came up with. And I will readily admit it involves little wrestling, but rest assured, I wouldn't actually leave out the nuts and bolts if this were a real booking.
Warning: It's really long so turn away now unless you want the full Jimmy experience. I took elements of the Cena/Nexus storyline because really, the whole 'Rey joining the SES' thing would have gone that route too had it happened.
Without further ado, here it is:
Over the Limit: Punk defeats Mysterio when the Titantron shows Serena, Luke, and the mystery man surrounding Rey's family backstage, allowing Punk to hit the GTS and keep his hair, and thus forcing Rey to join the Straight Edge Society.
SmackDown 5/28: Mysterio comes out and "squashes" a local opponent, punching him quickly, setting up and hitting the 619 and splash for the pin. He gets on the mic and angrily says that Punk went way too far and that he won't join his "cult", no matter what. Punk comes out and says that he has a personal letter from Vince McMahon saying that if Rey does not honor the stipulation he will be fired from WWE. Punk adds that he will personally pull every string and use every connection he has to make sure that Mysterio is blackballed from wrestling completely unless he joins the Straight Edge Society. Mysterio relents, but demands that Punk set up a specific time when Mysterio will be free from the SES. Punk says in 12 weeks, three months time, he will be free to leave the Straight Edge Society. He makes Rey give the official Pledge of Straight Edge.
SmackDown 6/4/10: Punk faces Big Show in the main event with Gallows, Serena, the masked man, and Rey all on his side. With the referee down Gallows and co all get taken out by Show leaving only Rey on the outside while Show beats them up. Punk demands that Rey come in and help, but Rey simply stands there and smiles. Show chokeslams Punk for the win.
SmackDown 6/11/10: Theodore Long announces that at Fatal Fourway it will be Jack Swagger defending the World Title against Big Show, CM Punk, and Rey Mysterio. Punk tells Mysterio that it is pivotal to the SES that Punk win the World Title so the purification of SmackDown and WWE can really begin. Punk books Mysterio and Gallows in a tag match against The Gatecrashers who pick up the win on Rey when Gallows walks out on him. Backstage Punk tells Mysterio he ordered Gallows to do that to teach Rey a lesson, that without the Society he is all alone in a world that will hurt him. Rey tells Punk he's tired of this crap and slaps him in the face and walks away.
SmackDown 6/18/10: Punk comes out to open SmackDown. He says that he does not hate Rey Mysterio, he loves him. He says that he loves him so much that he's even prepared to pay another visit to Rey's family if that is what it takes to "save" Rey. Rey tells Punk to leave his family out of it and that with almost a month down, he'll stay in line. The main event is Rey Mysterio and CM Punk vs. Jack Swagger and Big Show and Punk pins Swagger after Mysterio hit the 619 and Punk tagged in to gain the pin.
Fatal Fourway: A hell of a match that ends with Big Show chokeslamming Swagger and then pinning Punk after Rey ducked a KO punch that hit Punk instead and Rey didn't break up the count in his fatigued state. Punk gets on the microphone afterwards and says that Rey is not honoring the stipulation and that he will fi…no. He won't fire him. Punk is all about forgiveness. But Rey must be taught a lesson. It is back to basics and on Friday Rey will travel with Punk and the SES back to Chicago with him to truly learn what it means to be apart of the Straight Edge Society.
SmackDown 6/25/10: Punk allows a WWE camera to follow him and the Society to a normal looking house in Chicago, Illinois…for the small price of a nominal donation to the Straight Edge Society. Inside the house there are men and women, black and white, who wear SES shirts and they bow down when Punk first enters the house, before he lets them back on their feet. Punk says that people don't realize how large the Society really is and that he's been helping each and everyone of these people for quite some time.
Punk tells the masked man to please remove his mask, and underneath is, of course, a bald Joey Mercury. He asks Rey if he recognizes the man who twice defeated him for the WWE Tag Team Titles, and asked Rey if he ever thought twice about Mercury after he was released from WWE. Rey admits he hadn't and Punk tells him that Mercury struggled with addiction and nearly lost everything he had in his life before Punk saved him. Mercury tells Rey that he has no idea of the gifts that Punk is trying to give to Rey. Rey seems conflicted by all of this, wondering if perhaps Punk isn't as bad as he's made out to be. Punk tells Rey he has one more thing to show him, in another room. He insists that the WWE camera is not allowed inside, and that this is the key element to being an SES member, and it is only for Rey to experience.
SmackDown 7/2/10: Rey comes out for a promo where he says he thinks the SES may just be misunderstood. Punk comes out and hugs him (with that sneaky look on his face), and Rey slowly reciprocates. The two defeat The Dudebusters in a tag team match. Afterwards Kane comes out and accuses the SES of being behind Undertaker being taken out. He beats up Punk, Gallows, and Mercury. He stares at Serena and advances towards her when Rey hits Kane in the back with a steel chair, followed by a low blow from Serena. The SES flee the scene and Rey, perhaps reluctantly, perhaps not, walks away with them.
SmackDown 7/9/10: Gallows and Mercury are unsuccessful in defeating The Hart Dynasty and afterwards Punk comes out and tells them he has no choice but to teach them not to lose again. They willing take GTS's while Rey looks on.
Later World Heavyweight champion Big Show comes out and says he thinks all of this Straight Edge Society stuff is a bunch of crap and that Rey is being brainwashed by Punk. Punk doesn't care about Rey or Gallows or Mercury, just himself. Punk and Rey come out and Punk begins to make his argument when he suddenly low blows Big Show. Gallows and Mercury run in, teasing the idea that they'll save Show but instead put the boots to him. Gallows splashes him a few times and they set him up in the 619 position. After thinking about it, Rey hits the move on Show. Punk locks in the Anaconda Vice as SmackDown goes off the air.
SmackDown 7/16/10: Teddy Long informs us that Big Show has demanded Punk at Money in the Bank and Punk has agreed, but with the stipulation that Show must put the World Title on the line, to which Show agrees. Long says though that Punk is not here tonight, he is in Chicago with the SES and camera again. We see in Chicago a drunk man approaches Punk on the street and asks Punk to please, please save him. Punk asks him to get down on one knee and the man does, and then he orders Gallows and Mercury to attack him. Punk comments to the camera that an assault crime did not take place and that this was merely a mercy beating. Mysterio asks why Punk would do that to a man simply looking for help and Punk tells him that not everybody can be straight edge and be saved. The enter the house and the SES members chant "LONG LIVE PUNK" with their arms in the X symbol. Over the noise Rey insists that what Punk did to that man wasn't right, and Punk finally turns his tone harsh at Rey and insists he go back in "the room".
In the main event Big Show defeats Jack Swagger to retain the World Title when suddenly Punk and the SES attack. Punk says that the trip to Chicago occurred earlier in the week video to have been taped earlier in the week and that Rey is still there, in the room. But come Money in the Bank, you will all know where Rey's loyalty lays.
Money in the Bank: In Punk vs. Show the referee is bumped and Rey's Booyaka music hits as he comes charging down the ramp. In a lucky twist both Punk and Show are staggering to their feet on opposite corners of ring in the 619 position and Rey runs towards Punk…and checks on him. Seeing he is hurt and he becomes infuriated and 619's Big Show multiple times. Punk locks in the Anaconda Vice and Big Show's arm falls three times for the submission victory and World Title for Punk. Rey seems quite happy as Punk hugs him approvingly.
SmackDown 7/23/10: The entire SES (including everyone seen in the Chicago house) come out for a big celebration for Punk winning the World Title. All of them, including Rey, bow down in reverence to Punk. Rey congratulates Punk and while he's talking out walks his family. Angie says the Rey hasn't been home in weeks and she sees him on TV taking trips to Chicago and all of this SES nonsense. She says Rey even missed Dominick's birthday. They're a Christian family who believe in one savior and Rey has fallen victim to a false prophet. Punk tells her that he is the only savior and asks her where the youngest Mysterio is, the baby. She says she's with the babysitter and Punk says indeed the baby is with a babysitter, that Serena is wonderful with children. She and the baby are headed to Chicago to officially induct the child into the Straight Edge Society. Rey looks surprised and upset but Punk tells him it needs to be done in order to save the child. Rey's wife Angie runs off crying with her kids following close behind.
SmackDown 7/30/10: We open the show with Grisham and Striker saying that Angie Mysterio is inconsolable due to her baby being abducted by the Straight Edge Society while her husband allows it to happen. We are informed that Rey's son Dominick was taken to Chicago by John Morrison, the man who won #1 contendership to Punk's world title last week in order to try and get the child back.
At the SES house Punk is preparing for the induction ceremony which he wants to be broadcasted all over the world. Punk says that Rey was having serious doubts, so he was sent to "the room".
Conveniently Morrison and Dominick arrive just before the ceremony can finish. Morrison takes out the SES goons and Dominick snatches the child away from Punk. He hands the kid off to Morrison and goes to find his dad. He finds a convenient axe and breaks down the door to "the room", where Rey is sitting Clockwork Orange style in a chair with straps. There's a propaganda video playing of Punk, with the most repeated part being "Your family doesn't love you. Your friends don't love you. But I love you. Straight Edge is the only way. All hail Punk" over and over. Rey smashes the screen with an axe, unstraps his basically comatose zombie dad, and the they flee the scene.
SmackDown 8/6/10: The SES, minus Rey, come out and say that their house was destroyed and that damage is equal to the damage done to Angie and her family, and that he doesn't anticipate any legal repercussions. He does, however, think Dominick is a no-good little brat who needs to be disciplined. He says that Rey needs to remember that Straight Edge has always been there for him, and always will be. And that's why he's turned his SummerSlam match with Morrison into a triple threat with Rey, and that Rey will show his loyalty and keep the belt in the SES.
SmackDown 8/13/10: No Rey or his family this week as Striker and Grisham say they haven't been heard from. Punk is confident Rey will do the right thing at SummerSlam.
SummerSlam: CM Punk retains the World Heavyweight Title by pinning John Morrison. Rey was late to arrive in the match and come out wearing Punk'esque star design tights. Rey helps Punk but after hitting a 619 breaks up Punk's pin on Morrison. He and Punk start going at it until Morrison interjects again. Rey does the damage to Morrison and Punk pushed him out of the ring and pins Morrison to retain. Afterwards Rey crushes Punk's head with a steel chair shot, confirming he is no longer under Punk's mindtrip.
SmackDown 8/20/10: Rey Mysterio comes out and says that 12 weeks are up, and now that he's no longer brainwashed he is officially done being a part of the Straight Edge Society. He says he wants Punk one on one at the next PPV. Punk accepts, and even willingly puts the title on the line. He then informs Rey that Night of Champions is being held in Chicago, Illinois, and he will make Rey the official martyr for the Straight Edge Society.
Alright I've written a ing marathon so far and really the last few weeks of SmackDown are all in the build-up to Night of Champions. We have segments of Rey apologizing relentlessly to his family while they tell him it's not his fault. Punk agonizes over having lost his followers after the destruction of his SES house, but turns on a dime as he says they were all losers and they'll probably die on the streets like the garbage they are without him. And each week leading up to the PPV Rey takes out Gallows, Mercury, and then finally Angie comes out and delivers a swift slap to Serena two days before the big match at SummerSlam, ensuring that it will be one on one.
Night of Champions: During his entrance Punk motions for something, and that is for banners of Rey during his time with the SES to be revealed around the arena. They have an awesome match that ends with Rey pinning Punk cleanly in the middle of the ring to win the World Title.
Rey is overwrought with emotion but he looks back at the ring and see Punk, his mouth filled with blood, smiling. And Rey just snaps. He assaults Punk all around ringside and to the backstage area where he places Punk in a car and drives away. After the next match we see he has gone back to the house. He props Punk up in the chair in the room and cuts off his hair. As he leaves the former SES followers stare at him, and he tells them Punk is in the room as he leaves. The enter the room and see their bald headed former Savior. Punk tells them to bow down and instead they make a large, progressively louder sound as they circle around him and engulf him, which is when the door closes.
ENDUT
And then Santino Marella comes out and dances.
