This time of year, poinsettia plants are usually given as a holiday custom or decoration. These plants have been rumored to be poisonous to cats. In truth, poinsettias are not poisonous, but the alkaloids in the leaf tissue can cause irritation to the mucus membranes of the mouth and throat.
If the plant was treated with a systemic pesticide that, when ingested by a cat, can be lethal. Even if plants are listed as not being poisonous, pets and certainly children should be kept from ingesting them.
Just a helpful reminder. Keep your pets & children safe!

And for the love of god, keep tinsel out of any cat-occupied home.

Can one of the mods move this to the Cat Board? Thanks for sharing this, I don't think I ever knew this. Are the cats attracted to poinsettias specifically or is it just a precaution as cats may sometimes eat flowers?

Flowers and things of that nature are rarely in my house so that's good, because I doubt I would be able to know what plant is which.

From my own experience with family members bringing Poinsettias into the house, I think it has to do with certain cats just liking to eat plants. None of the cats in my house tried to eat it, so I don't think it was a case of them being attracted to Poinsettias.

That's pretty much the trick - every cat has a different temperament, and is so differently inclined to eat as they do.

And for the love of god, keep tinsel out of any cat-occupied home. Yes! I forgot about this. Dogs too. It messes up their intestinal track & can cause a very painful death.

Thanks for the post OP. Many people with cats probably didn't know that.

And for the love of god, keep tinsel out of any cat-occupied home. We'll be doing this. A cat we had a few years back didn't bother with decorations at all, but I just know one of our current ones will. The one who chewed a small piece of the door off today.

My cats enjoy knocking christmas decorations off the tree and batting them around.

That's good to know since I have 3 cats that I don't want to die. I never have though though so it should not be a problem. Still nice to pass that along.

I remember one holiday season, my sister's cat (who has since passed away) chewed through a wire of the tree lights. We heard a zapping sound, she ran out of the room, and the whole strand of blue lights went out.
