Hi,
Thought I'd share my opinion on Alberto Del Rio. I think ever since his debut, he has been pushed and pushed to get over with the WWE fans - but it really isn't working. I think the man is holding himself back; He cannot talk and he just fails to 'WOW' me in the ring....
The Rey Mysterio feud on his debut shows he has a "devastating" armbar = GREAT, this shows he has a powerful and painful finishing move for the younglings out there. Rey wasn't gone long enough for the impact to be long-lasting, although "taking out" Christian helped his cause.
Point 1: His grasp on the English language destroys almost all of his promos "You look like DYING DOG...I think...i think someone should put you down!" or "My Name is Albert _EL Rio...but you, you already know that!" - Dude, there's a D in front of your middle name, please pronounce it.
Point 2: In ring, the guy loves doing dropkicks and inseguri's (spelling?) and he slaps the hell out of his leg each and every time which diminishes the impact of his move, particularly when the wrestler taking it, doesn't sell it all that well.
Point 3: On the Survivor Series team, he was knocked out and had no impact, doesn't help him...
Point 4: COMMENTARY and general speaking - he is amongst the worst. When he was at ringside for Rey/Cody's KOTR qualifier, he was asked "We talked about Rey, what do you think about Cody?" He grimaces, turns around and says... "I, I think I'm gonna pass on that question"
DUDE, IT"S NOT THAT HARD - I would have accepted something like:
- He may be a dashing young man, but doesn't have the looks or the class if Alberto Del Rio
- "Dashing" is the only thing Cody has going for him, even if he qualifies, he and the little chiwowa Rey have no chance going against me, you're future King!
In closing on this - I think really good heels can still be built on sub-par ring skills (with a good move or 2) but ALSO be able to be a really good talker, promo cutter and aggravator. His ring announcer and constant horn sounds all help; but if you can't TALK the talk > GTFO... (or improve Del Rio!)

On another note, why the hell would WWE keep Barretta and fire Croft? One half of the DudeBusters doesn't work, particulary when the feud is against Curt Hawkins, who unfortunately, about 16 people care about whi watch Superstars...the WWE have VERY little on the way of teag teams; so they split the only good one (Hart Dynasty) and then rip apart more tag teams which only made rare appearances anyway; DudeBusters! I understand budgetary cuts (ie: Vance Archer) but some firings just don't make sense, i think this is one of em...

I can honestly say I 100% disagree with you.
I think he is great in the ring, he has a terrific look, and his mic work is very good.

Actually, i had no idea the reasoning behind Croft's dismissal, was it budgetary or something else? I never read up on it

I can honestly say I 100% disagree with you. I think he is great in the ring, he has a terrific look, and his mic work is very good. Compare him to Miz, A-Ry, Kane or even Mr English Wade Barrett on the mic - absoloutely no comparison whatsoever. If you're a talent cout and you heard his promo and said you were impressed, well...thats just bizarre, how long have you watched wrestling for? |

Yeah, screw that whole "he's from another country" thing. It's clear English or bust over here!  But seriously, if you don't get it yet, the broken english is what helps get him (and EVERY other foreign wrestler) over as a heel. It's an age old formula dude. -Get international wrestling star from foreign country -Give him "better than everyone" gimmick. -Have him injure fan favorite |

I have watched wrestling for 14 years now and have spent the last five digging into wrestling archives to expand my knowledge into the 1970s and 1980s too. Alberto oozes charisma. Granted, his accident does cause him to mispronounce words, but I am not arrogant enough to hold that against him or anyone. I mean hell, you misspelled half of your original post, but I still respected your opinion and did not hold that against you. I also think it is funny that you are going to get frustrated over Alberto (who you refer to as Albert in your original post, but I overlooked that) yet mention Wade Barrett. Now I am also a fan of Wade, but he can get pretty dry on the microphone at times. Regardless, he speaks a different language making him sound silly when he says certain things; yet, you are not going to hold that against him while you hold Alberto's speech against him? Additionally, everyone makes mistakes! You are going to tell me that you have never mispronounced a word or struggled to say one correctly? And since you brought up the Miz, we can talk about him for a second. He is also a man who has a lot of charisma, but he has mispronounced words too. I am not sure why you hold that against Del Rio, but you think it is fine for the Miz to do it. Finally, if I was a talent scout I would hire Del Dio. I would be happy to find someone as talented as him and as unique as him. He has a unique look and a unique style, along with years of experience, making home a lot better than just a typical masculine white male that you would hire in a heartbeat. Also, I just thought of this and would like to add it in really quick. There have been so many legends to step inside the ring who lacked mic skills or struggled with the English language. Here are just a few examples of people who fit that category and are in the Hall of Fame: Andre the Giant, Antonio Inoki, and Nikolai Volkoff. |

Not sure if OP is trolling, but hey, I'll respond anyway.
Del Rio is one of the best things going for the WWE in years. When it comes to main eventers, it's very clear that the bigger guys are always favoured. Sub par technical wrestlers like Sheamus, Cena, Orton, Batista will always get the shot over Bourne, Bryan whoever... Because the main event is populated by these 'style over substance' wrestlers (who I have no problem with if they can talk) who got into the business through their physique and learnt to wrestle at a later time. Del Rio HAS the physique of these guys; 6ft5, 250ish pounds but can also execute the high risk, fast paced moves that separates the pro wrestlers from the sports entertainers. His top rope enzuigiri is simply beautiful.
As for his mic skills, I guess that's a little more subjective. I personally find his accent a great part of his character. He mixes up that egotistical 'latino charm' of his with a sometimes vicious and intimidating tone. He's like the perfect heel in that he plays the narcissist just as well as he does the aggressor.

The fans react to him like they should. As of right now, he's not intensely booed but he's over. Give it time.
As far as his English is concerned, well...okay....I get your point, but if Sheamus can get a pass for his mic skills and broken English then Alberto Del Rio should too if you ask me.
In the ring, he's very good not great but good enough and way above average. You add all that together plus an easy gimmick to work and good look then you have your perfect WWE superstar.

I've actually been impressed with Del Rio. I think his promos come off legit without feeling forced. His performance in the ring has been very solid as well.
I also like the fact they are pushing him without going overboard with it. He's lost to Rey once & Morrison twice, so he hasn't been pushed to the moon.
As far as the Dude Busters go... The WWE kept the right one. Croft wasn't as good in the ring as Trent. And if we end up with Beretta & Hawkins as a team I'll be happy.

The WWE is in serious trouble if you guys think Del Rio is a top superstar/main eventer/heel
Half my original post was mis spelt Matt? lol, no need to be a dick. I misspelt the "kick to the back of the head" move, as I wasn't bothered looking up the correct spelling for it. I guess I type too fast as well.
lol, I completely take back this post, there's too many kids on here that just take the piss (sorry, grow up) and about 2 people who have actually contributed properly to the discussion, regardless of its agree or disagree. Del Rio on NXT is a good thing, as its more coverage - but if the guy can't answer a simple friggen question about something thats not about Rey mysterio being compared to a dog - he won't have much of a future.
