Basically for a 5.1 system you have two front speakers, rear speakers, a center speaker, subwoofer and the receiver (dvd player if it comes with it) when you buy a home theater system. 5 speakers + 1 subwoofer equates to the 5.1. Everything gets hooked up to the receiver using the speaker wire supplied. I recommend buying 16gauge speaker wire. Your DVD player, TV or gaming system gets connected using your choice of audio cable(s), I would use a fiber optic connection. Some receivers let you connect your components for sound and video. Its extremely easy to set up a home theater. Sound bar is nice because it does not require a receiver. Just plug and play basically.
