Is there really no difference in HDMI cables? Not unless the cheaper cables are damaged. Yeah I bought a $2 HDMI cable on amazon and the picture flashes on and off. Luckily it was a second cable for my 360 (getting tired of switching back and forth) and it was only $2 down the drain. I think my situation is a rare case so I would still go with an $2 HDMI cable.

As long as the cable is gold plated it's all the same. I made the mistake of spending 150 dollars on a Monster cable that apparently was the BEST OF THE BEST for picture and audio. Ended up buying a 6 foot Amazon Basics gold plated for 5 dollars and it worked the same...well even better since it was 6 feet and the Monster cable was 4.
Now there trying to trick people with 3D saying you need a 3D Monster HDMI cable... yet my current cables play 3D.

They are the biggest rip off ever in electronics, like everyone else I just bought 2 of mine of ebay for 2 dollars each. One for Blu-ray and one for xbox, they work fine.

Kind of related, would the HDMI cable have any effect on the signal as far as television channels goes? I've noticed some of my local channels are 1080 and others are 720. Would that just be the stations themseleves broadcasting at that?

Would that just be the stations themseleves broadcasting at that? The stations have control over the signal output. The HDMI cable does what it's told. LOL Most channels are in 720p or 1080i. There are no channels currently in 1080p except for Video On Demand services.

The guy at the store conned me into buying a £30 one. He basically said that only that one would play in 1080p...twat.

HDMI cables are amazing, such quality and easy to use. Like others have said never pay more than 5-10 dollars for one though.

HDMI is a digital connection. You either get full signal or you don't get any. There is no difference between high end cables and low end cables unless they are damaged or SUPER old and created before the updated formats.
People at electronic stores are trained to tell people that there are differences because "high quality" cables make the company more profit.

Seeing the difference in what they go for at minimum and what they go for in stores, that profit margine must be HUGE.

The truth is, if everyone bought their HDMI cables (and USB, Component, etc.) online; Best Buy and like companies would be out of business right now.

I don't really think people go to Best Buy just for a cable. No, but people buy TVs, Xboxs, PS3s, etc. at Best Buy and need to buy cables to connect them. Monster cables are marked up so highly that Best Buy ends up getting more profit from a single cable than 9 PS3s.

No crap but is Best Buy really going to go out of business because people don't buy their cables? How many cables does Best Buy carry compared to all their other merchandise. Do you see rows and rows of cables? No.

Monster cables are marked up so highly that Best Buy ends up getting more profit from a single cable than 9 PS3s. This. If they sell this $99.99 HDMI cable, they probably make about $80-90 on it. Meanwhile, they probably make less than $20 on a PS3. No poop but is Best Buy really going to go out of business because people don't buy their cables? How many cables does Best Buy carry compared to all their other merchandise. Do you see rows and rows of cables? No. Apparently you haven't been to Best Buy in the past 10 years. Certainly they sell other things than cables, but cables and audio equipment (speakers, receivers, etc.) are by FAR their most profitable products. You take away their most profitable products and they aren't making enough money to pay their employees.

Just got another cable in the mail that I bought for a penny on Amazon. Zero difference in the $30 I bought.

can someone post an ebay link to a solid/reliable cable I could get for my ps3? Just buy one from monoprice or Amazon. You'll get it for super cheap and, in the event the cable is somehow defective, you have someone to easily hold accountable.

Essentially, yes. The thing to keep in mind is you want "Category 2", as it allows 1080p. Frankly, I'm not aware of anyone selling Category 1 cables anymore, at least without trying to screw people over. The cable you picked is Category 2, so you're fine. The only other thing to keep in mind is how long a cable you need. That one's 6ft.
