According to IGN, it takes place in the X Universe like Age of Apocalypse. It states they are trapped in another dark and worn torn reality. Take it for whats its worth.

I'm just geting back into comics and the only Marvel title I'm reading is Thor and Ultimate Thor. With Marvel raising the prices to 3.99, I'm limited to what to read.

Also big into Secret Avengers (my favorite current title) and Ultimate Cap.

Mike Carey said it was his decision to dive right into the story, and then explain what happened as they go along. Only the prologue is out right now, so we should find out more and more as the issues go on. As of right now, there's no explanation for what's happened, but it's intended to be that way.
I'd expect it has something to do with Blindfold freaking out in the last X-Men Legacy issue.

its definitely an alternate reality. the X-Universe is the regular 616 universe and since Age of X runs through Fear Itself it means that its not the normal timeline. the X-Men, particularly Cyclops and Namor, are supposedly going to play a large role in Fear Itself and thats a company wide crossover so Age of X has to take place in a different timeline.
as i understand it, it's an alternate future. and i honestly think its the same alternate future that the X-Men: Destiny video game will take place in since Carey is writing both and he said in OXM that the character you are will be debuting in the comics soon. the game takes place in an alternate future, Age of X takes place in alternate future and also Gambit in Age of X looks really similiar to his appearance in Destiny.

Well that totally different than what the other guy said.

i thought after siege they intended to end the company-wide crossovers. where did you hear that? Quesada and Axel Alonso announced Fear Itself back in December in a big press conference stating that it was company wide and would crossover into everything and the solicits mention Namor and their was a Cyclops teaser and its Matt Fraction writing the series and Alonso who announced it. i'd say the X-Men play a huge role is this series, especially since Xarus and the vampires will be heavily involved and everything those characters have been doing has involved the X-Men. also, i cant see Marvel ever saying they wont ever do a company-wide crossover ever again. thats insane.

I do remember them saying Siege would be the last one for awhile, but not forever. I expected it to be longer than a year but oh well. side note, I absolutely LOVE the teaser image of Cyclops dressed as Magneto.
