Typically it takes a fair amount for me to work up the desire to start a thread around here. I prefer responding and engaging in pre-created discussions, but occasionally an idea strikes me that I find fit to bring up.
While thinking about the Elimination Chamber tonight, it occurred to me that there is virtually no way for WWE to sell last minute buys to potential viewers and nothing to really wrap up the hype for a show. It's just Smackdown, and then the Pay-Per-View.
The lame half hour pre-shows that are free on Pay-Per-View don't count, as they simply show clips from Raw and Smackdown and spoil the Pay-Per-View video packages for later in the night.
I'm talking most specifically about Sunday Night Heat. It's not often I'm nostalgic for a show that rarely served any purpose, but once a month, on the night of a Pay-Per-View, Sunday Night really meant something. There were a couple of televised matches that not only served the purpose of hyping the live crowd, but also gave the announcers some time to talk about upcoming event and brush across what was going on in the company right now.
In fact, I started watching wrestling because of Sunday Night Heat. I happened to be scanning channels the night of Rock Bottom '98, came across Heat and saw a promo for the Undertaker/Stone Cold match and became interested in the Buried Alive concept. I finished watching the show, tuned in to Raw the next night to find out, and absolutely fell in love.
So I guess what I'm getting at is, would you like to see a Sunday Night Heat type show resurrected? Perhaps even move Superstars into the Sunday Night slot, making it more accessible on a widely spread channel generating some interest in the undercard, all while having the ability to promote your upcoming event live. Who knows, perhaps there could even be something that takes place on the show that drives that one person that is on the fence about ordering to do so, and in this day and age, every buy counts.
