Track 1: The Basics
“Welcome to How to Wrestle, if your listening to this tape then you must truly want to make something of a yourself. So lets begin, the first step is knowing your opponent, what are his strengths. At this point you have to comprehend what exactly stepping into the ring means to the man(or woman) standing across from you. Once you have seen through your opponents eyes, then you can strategize and begin to point out such flaws in their approach. Lets give a few examples for those of us who need them to help realize what I am telling them is truth.”
“Example 1: Johnny wants to be a wrestler when he grows up, wants to be big and strong just like some of the greats. What Johnny doesn’t know yet is what it takes to make a great wrestler. Johnny has studied many texts but fails to realize that all the text books would not teach him what he needed to step into that ring. He had not faired well recently and his detriment to the federation was becoming a noticeable eye sore. He would be squared off against a veteran.”
“Alright so now we have our example situation, Johnny has studied up well but has done no studying of his opponent. It also seems as though Johnny may have some arrogance as well which can blind even the best wrestlers. So we have taken a look at the basics and an example of someone who maybe needs to read a bit more into it. Maybe Johnny can overcome his self but when a wrestler makes a committed stance, they almost never slip from it. It is a sad but true face which brings us to our next step. Versatility."
Track 2: Versatility
“In our last lesson we looked at how you set up for a match and took a look a Johnny as our example of what can happen if you don’t heed even the basics. This lesson is on Versatility, which is the ability to keep your opponent only guessing at what your capabilities as a wrestler really are. A lot of people new to the sport can get caught up in their own hype and not see what is coming. A true wrestler knows that the best offense is one that varies, same with defense. If your opponent doesn’t have a clue what is coming then there is no preparation and nothing to be used against. Again, we will us Johnny again as an example of how a new wrestler can get into such a bad habit.”
“Example 2: Johnny has had poor prep for his match and to top it off he has been way to consistent. His wrestling style has not varied, he was wanting to define a unique idea of wrestling. What Johnny didn’t realize is that his opponent is still a veteran and knows a bit more then he does. Johnny’s “unique” style became his heel and he was predictable. This could cost poor Johnny the match, when a bit more study and time and maybe he would have seen his opponents heel or knew to change it up.”
“So we see, yet again, where some proper study and such could have swung the match in Johnny’s favor. Sometimes when were new we only see ourselves and look less at others. If you never read, you will never further your capacity to understand more difficult texts. But if we take our time and give ourselves and others a serious look over, what we can find out and see is the single and most helpful. Your Opponent is only another man in the ring with you, what you know and what he knows is the only thing that is not chance in the match up. Now that brings me to my final point. Knowing.”
Track 3: Knowing
“Now that we have looked into our opponents head and played with our move set a bit, now we need to take a cold hard look at the facts. The truth is some matches we weren’t meant to win and some meant to lose and others may actually end up being something of a challenge. Though challenges can be found, for the most part we know our place. Acceptance of our place can be the difference between a loss and an injury depending on how we play it out. Lets go back to Johnny for one more look at how acceptance could pose a threat or be your best friend.”
“Example 3: Johnny has not only now came to the ring unprepared, and with a predictable move set but he has also came to the ring with and attitude. Johnny doesn’t seem to realized that his opponent, who is a veteran, knows what Johnny is thinking and plans to abuse this for his pleasure. Johnny’s only problem is that he thinks that he stands a chance despite him still being a novice. So instead of putting on a good show, Johnny attempts to go for the throat, what he finds is a Veteran, who was always prepared.”
“So now we see knowing our place can be a big thing. New wrestlers would do well to let the big boys wrestle until they are ready. But when fate deals you that hand, try to learn and enjoy the experience but remember that the veteran plans on winning no matter what you might thing you have up your sleeve. He has been around longer and knows more and before the match ends, he will win. But as long as you accept your fate and just have fun with it, you will grow and one day you will hold his place.”
“For a final thought, remember that being a wrestler is more then just some game, it’s a competition. It needs to be taken seriously and study should always be done. Well thank you all for listening and I hope you can take what you have learned here and become greats yourselves.”
“Oh and for a special listener, Johnny, please heed my words.”
