Do you have a 16-25 railcard? You get 1/3 off all travel.
My Dad works in a ticket office at one station and he gets me the cheapest tickets for travel, so I suggest you go into your nearest ticket office, definetly more less hassle as well.

If you go into the train station you'll be travelling from they should have an information desk that will help you plan the cheapest journey possible.

I get trains every week.
heres a few tips for the future.
1). If your eligible, get a young persons rail card.. save a fortune.
2). If you can.. book between 2 and half to 3 months before trip, its when all of the cheapest possible tickets arrive online and they dont last for long. (e.g - i can get from newcastle to london for £15 if i do this).
3). trainline, in my opinion the best website for booking tickets.
4). Usually when you book a ticket, it charges you a specific amount and this includes all possible changes on route.. Check the journey, if theres a change, it maybe a lot cheaper to get a ticket to the place where you have to change and then another ticket from that place to your destination. On average, i tend to save between £5-£10 doing this.
All in all, add the above things together, you will generally save loads as you can use all of those tips at the same time.
hope some of it helps
