With Wrestlemania in three weeks, I want to reflect on what I believe was the greatest, Wrestlemania X-Seven. I'll take a look at the card and do a what are they doing now thing and reflect on how the company has changed.
The card:
Chris Jerico def. William Regal to retain the Intercontinental Championship.
Jericho: Left at the end of September last year, currently on DWTS, may return someday
Regal: Wrestles on Superstars, occasionally on Raw.
APA/Tazz def. Right to Censor
APA are retired, Tazz is commentator in TNA, RTC-Steven was last seen as Dr. Stevie in TNA, last I remember of Buchanan is when he was Cena's sidekick B-2, Val and Goodfather breifly returned to popular gimmicks, then drifted away.
Kane def. Big Show and Raven to win the Hardcore Title
Kane and Big Show are rumored to be teaming up against the Corre this year, last I remember of Raven was seeing him in TNA about four years ago.
Eddie Guerrero def. Test to win the European Title
Unfortunately, both are deceased
Kurt Angle def Chris Benoit
Angle is currently in TNA
Benoit put a black-eye on wrestling with a double murder/suicide in 2007
Chyna def. Ivory to win the Women's Championship
Chyna left not long after and did a bunch of drugs and a distrubing adult video
Ivory left a year or so after, no idea what she's doing now
Shane McMahon def Vince McMahon in a street fight
Shane left the company in the beginning of 2010, was last seen on TV getting destroyed by Legacy
Vince still owns the company but seems to be fading away from the scene being 65 years old
Edge/Christian def. the Hardys and Dudleys in a TLC match to win the tag team championship
Edge is defending against Del Rio, Christian is involved in the same fued and could be inserted in the match
Hardys are in TNA
Dudleys are in TNA fueding with each other
Iron Sheik won the gimmick battle royal
no idea what these guys are doing, some have been inducted in the HOF I think
The Undertaker def. Triple H
According to current storylines, this match never happened and this year is the first meeting at Wrestlemania between these two.
Stone Cold Steve Austin def. The Rock to win the World Wrestling Federation Championship
Stone Cold is a special guest referee this year
The Rock is the host of this year's Wrestlemania
Then
Every match was great and had the fans on the edge of their seats, there was techinical wrestling, brawling, blood, a TV-14 rating, the tag and IC titles still meant something, and there was an ending that nobody saw coming.
Now
The hardcore and European Championships are no more, the Womens Championship has become the Divas Championship, and the Tag and IC title are more or less meaningless. There is a much tamer, more family friendly product with a PG rating.
5, possibly 6 superstars who wrestled on this card are scheduled or rumored to be on the card for Wrestlemania 27, and the main event performers of WM 17 have returned for special appearances.
What a difference 10 years makes
