The last episode of WCW Nitro aired. On that episode, Mr. McMahon appeared via satellite from where RAW was eminating, to brag that he was buying World Championship Wrestling, and would sign the papers at Wrestlemania X7. Before he could, however. His son Shane appeared in PCB, and announced that the papers have been signed and "the name on the documents does say 'McMahon' but it reads 'SHANE' McMahon!" Shane had successfully snatched WCW from right under his dad's nose, thus starting what would become one of the biggest angle letdowns ever- The InVasion.
In real life, Vince had actually bought WCW and all its assets and as a result, more than doubled his roster.
Fun Fact: Chavo Guerrero has been working for WWE ever since.

It's crazy. I remember it like it was yesterday and for it to have been 10 years now is sad. I always wonder how different the industry would be right now had WCW not gone down. Would a guy like AJ really have succeeded in WCW? Would John Cena be where he is now? Would Cena be more popular, assuming wrestling as a whole was more popular with the competition? As bad as WCW was towards the end I still watched nearly every damn episode from 97-01. There was always the chance that one guy would leave and show up somewhere else and having two shows trying to truly outdo each other was so fun for the fans, and I would guess the wrestlers as well.
So many what ifs, and what could have beens, and it is certainly a shame will never find out imo.

You know I sat down and thought about the inVasion recently, and yes it was a giant FAIL of an angle...but as I reasoned it out I thought of this...
WCW was Vince McMahon's biggest competition Ted Turner was Vince's rival. They hated each other. WCW KILLED RAW in ratings for years remember??? Finally (thanks to Vince Russo) WCW just couldn't hold up anymore with their horrible storylines (Goldberg is New Blood etc.) & terrible talents (The Maestro, Kwee Wee, Tank Abbott, etc.)
Vince saw an opportunity and KILLED his only competition. In turn hiring some of their best (Booker, Flair, DDP) & firing some of their worst. After all was said and done...think of this:
Why would Vince McMahon in any way, shape or form want to make WCW look "good"? Vince is a genius, he knows wrestling and he knows business. He bought out his competition and thoroughly BURIED them. What was he supposed to do? Just keep running Nitro with the same guys? Have 10 Wrestling shows a month? Have the entire WCW roster just come in and replace HIS OWN creation?
The inVasion was fun while it lasted, it ran it's course and was essentially killed at Survivor Series. In the end, Vince wins. He always wins. There was no reason to make WCW look good at all...not in the eyes of Vince.

It's weird but not having watched wrestling for even a year I didn't even realize just how huge the ramifications would be. I mostly just remember being saddened when Vince opened RAW by basically firing Jarrett because I was a Jarrett fan.

A sad day for sure, but atleast we have TNA. Exactly. Now instead of laughing at WCW's horrible booking in their final months, we can laugh at TNA's horrible booking. Thank goodness for TNA. Provides lots and lots of comic relief.

It's weird but not having watched wrestling for even a year I didn't even realize just how huge the ramifications would be. I mostly just remember being saddened when Vince opened RAW by basically firing Jarrett because I was a Jarrett fan. Vince McMahon was just talking sh*t....none of those guys got fired. Sting, Hogan, Jarrett, Nash.....they sat home and made a TON of money doing nothing just watching the remainder of their WCW money come rolling in. From what I understand, when WCW was bought by WWE, the deal with certain guys contracts were that WWE could pick you up and you would get half of what you were owed, or you could not come to WWE and get the entire thing. I remember Kevin Nash saying something like "So I can make half the money and work or not work and make all the money? That's a pretty easy decision". Obviously the lower tier WCW guys who's contracts were not worth much or who's contracts were almost up decided to take the job in WWE....but all of WCW's big names (except for Booker T) decided to pack it up and go home. Which is why the WCW Invasion failed.

"You know how Jeff Jarrett spells his name, J E DOUBLE F, J A DOUBLE R E DOUBLE T? How about G O DOUBLE N DOUBLE E, GONNEE!"
Always thought that was hilarious.

i remember it very well...there was talk that Eric Bischoff and a company called Fusient Media were going to buy it....Eric was gonna run it....
then, the AOL / Time-Warner merger happened ,and they decided that "Wrasslin" wasn't a product they wished to show or promote on their networks anymore (TNT and TBS)....
that right there killed the deal,as there were no TV rights to keep it viable...and the Fusient deal fell through....and suddenly the internet was rampant with rumors that Vince was going to buy WCW,and then it was made real by the official press release/announcement,just 3 days before the final Nitro aired...
a lot of people don't remember, they DID plan to initially run WCW as a seperate entity ,probably like an early version of the brand extension.... they even sold tickets to the first event under the McMahon banner...i remember someone posting pics of the tickets they bought....i remember they said "Shane McMahon Presents WCW " on them, and it was somewhere in New Jersey.....but the event never happened...
