The Flaming Lips' Yoshimi Theatrical Show in Early Production Stages
Word of a full-fledged stage adaptation of The Flaming Lips’ Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots has been circling since 2007, but the band has recently confirmed that the theatrical show is now in the “early stages of production.” The band plans to begin workshopping the show with director Des McAnuff soon.
The storyline of the show will be based on Yoshimi but will also include songs from The Soft Bulletin and At War with the Mystics. “It’ll be a big chunk of Flaming Lips music, probably about 30 songs,” frontman Wayne Coyne told Billboard.com. “It’s a big deal. It’s hokey and wonderful and poignant and powerful. It’s really become a perfect combination of my fantastical robot-world vision and [McAnuff’s] little, internal, humanistic version of what that music is. I really believe it could work — and luckily I don’t have to do much!”
The band also discussed their plans for future releases. So far this year, The Flaming Lips have released a song on YouTube made up of 12 parts intended to be played simultaneously on iPhones, as well as a limited-edition EP hand-delivered to record stores by members of the band.
“We’ve done 14 or so records, and you’re always scrambling around trying to do something different,” Coyne explains. “Everybody’s in the same quagmire now; How do you release music? What would be interesting? I’d just like to release music all the time and just put it out in all kinds of weird formats and not just collect it until we’re ready to put out [an album] every two years or so. It’s just by luck that we run into people that are willing to help us and… want to do something radical with us.”
