I have in the past, and now, see people posting about UPC Numbers. A lot of comments ask how it helps, well I'll explain how.
I work at Wal-Mart and as an employee, we work with these handheld machines called Telxons. They help us to locate merchandise if we have it on hand, have it at the warehouse, or if the warehouse is actually out.
By giving a UPC number to an employee they are able to go into their telxon and see if they even have it in the backroom. So yes, they can tell if its on the shelves or in the back just by that magical number and not have to travel the store and keep you on hold for long periods of time.

I've used the Target DCPI# quite often. The employees usually give me a strange look that I know these numbers especially when they are new items that haven't reached the shelves. "Well there's this little thing called the internet and you can use it to find information....."

Personally I work overnights, and Ive used the system by scanned some items just to see where its at. I forgot to add, that that number even shows us if its in transit or not. Its pretty cool.
