The Accountant (2016)
Damn good movie, undeserving of its negative reviews.

With the new one coming out in a couple days, I rewatched Jack Reacher. When I first saw it I had never read any of the books, so even though Tom Cruise is literally the polar opposite of how the character is described, I didn't care. I have since begun reading the books, which are fantastic by the way. And while I get the gripes the book readers have with Cruise playing it, it doesn't bother me since I saw the film first, I can keep the two separate pretty easily.
Jack Reacher: First of all, the opening scene, even four years later and knowing it's coming, it still incredibly disturbing. It does it's job, and leaves a dark cloud over the proceedings. Cruise plays the role much more seriously and grim, no nonsense than his usual action fare, which is refreshing. Werner Herzog is enjoyable as a villain, and even Jai Courtney as his enforcer is good here. The action scenes, while not particularily numerous, stand out when they happen. The huge shootout at the end was really well done, as are the minor hand to hand fights that Reacher has in the first act. The biggest standout is the big car chase, where Reacher is in a muscle car, and it spins out of control and stalls just like that type of vehicle would in a chase. THe attention to detail on that was incredible, and the fact that Cruise did all of his own stunt driving really helps bring you into the scene. It is the standout of the entire film.
What I liked about this film is that Reacher is a former military investigator, and a large part of this film is exploring the case of why the man did/did not kill who was killed in the beginning, and how deep everything went. The film can be a bit of a slow burn, but it has more plot and substance that a lot of the typical action fare we get these days, and it keeps you interested in what is going on, even when there is no fighting happening.
Rosamund Pike is really good in the film, and her character, a defense lawyer who is the daughter of the district attorny, and who is opposing her father's most recent case, is well developed, and has good chemistry with Reacher. Just enough time is dedicated to her subplot with her father that it adds to her, but never detracts from the main focus of the film.
All in all, I consider Jack Reacher to be a very strong film that tends to get overlooked, or that a lot of people simply missed. If you can get behind the slower pace, it stands out amongst the crowd.
9/10

Argo.
Nicely directed, tense and intriguing in parts, but in others was quite boring, I found. Pretty good though, all told.

-- The Curse (1987)
Lower B/C grade movies like this, are what should be remade (instead of established classics being redone). This flick had potential, but kind of goofed up on parts, I would've tweaked it a few times over.

With that being said the sequel is being called "basic" and "by the book action".. Which will prevent me from watching it in theaters because I'm already pretty far behind.. But I look forward to it one day. I don't expect it to live up to the first though.

For all you Jack Reacher fans out there, there's another movie you can check out and probably like staring Apollo Creed & Coach Hayden Fox:
Also, the last movie I watched was Coming to America, such a great comedy.

Jack Reacher: Never Go Back
As a huge fan of the first film, and Tom Cruise movies in general, I was quite excited for this film. It ended up being a giant disappointment. The basic idea of this one is that a military Major that Reacher has a thing for gets framed for espionage, and he has to break her out of military prison, becoming a fugitive himself, as the two try to figure out who is behind everything. At the same time, a teenage girl who may be his daughter gets discovered so he also has to take care of her while all of this is going on.
The good to start. Cobie Smulders is excellent in the film, and the actress who plays the teenage girl is solid as well. Cruise himself, while not bad, does seem a bit checked out. Not that he is phoning it in, it isn't his style, but he tends to stare off into nothing a lot, and I think there was miscommunication from director to actor.
The action scenes are alright. They aren't bad, but nothing about any of them stands out or will be remembered a month from now. Which also goes for any specific moments in the film. The first film still makes me remember the car chase, the chilling opening scene and the fight outside the bar. Not to mention the villains were fun. This one has nothing like that.
The Reacher character feels like a totally different man than from the first film. They try to keep it feeling the same, him being a driftor and such. But he feels way too humanized here. I understand it in regards to his potential daughter, being protective and caring for her. But what they tried to do with him and the Major just didn't work. Would the Reacher of the first movie be making near constant quips and trying to get her to take him out to dinner? Remarking on if she has the champagne ready? It feels like Cruise is trying to play more of a half Reacher/Half bond, and it doesn't work.
The plot is also hard to follow. Not that it's confusing, but that it's all over the place. It isn't interesting and the lack of interesting villains makes that even worse. The first film had Reacher doing the good detective work trying to uncover things, and this one that idea felt like an afterthought.
There is nothing offensive about this film, but it's so paint by numbers and generic that it comes off as something you'd have expected in the early days of Cruise's career, as it's nowhere near the level of the first film, the last three Mission Impossible films, Oblivion or Edge of Tomorrow. If it's a redbox rental or netflix watch, it will pass the time on a boring night. But this ultimately feels like a generic action flick you'd see on cable at 1:00am on a Saturday night. I do not recommend paying to see this in theaters.

The Brave Little Toaster. I just wish Disney would give this movie a proper widescreen Blu-Ray release already

Saw IV.
Not my favorite out of the four I've seen, but I enjoyed it.

The Purge Election
This movie is the weakest of the 3.
A girl cant afford a candy bar but she can afford a few dozen light strings to decorate her car? And she can afford an assault rifle? And she can afford to bedazzle the rifle? But not the candy bar?
And then the idea that the purge kills the poor is ok but think about it. There are more poor than there are wealthy. The purge has been taking place for a few decades at this point so wouldnt the poor already have over thrown many of the rich? Also the candidate eliminates the purge, so does that mean no sequel ever again?
