Former "Howard Stern" radio star Artie Lange returned to the airwaves last night -- on a sports talk show -- telling fans that returning to his old job on Stern would be "the greatest thing ever."
Lange disappeared from the Stern show in January 2010 ... after a private medical emergency ...
But last night, Lange appeared on a Fox Sports Radio show hosted by his friend and fellow comic Nick DiPaolo and explained he had been spending time at a rehab facility in Florida to get himself sober.
A caller told Lange he couldn't wait for Lange to return to the Stern show ... and Artie replied, "That would be the greatest thing ever."
Lange continued, "Listen, I was on the greatest show of all time for about 9 years ... and I put them in a very awkward situation to say the least, so, what am i gonna do?
"But I love them all and they were great to me. I appreciate it."

The "private medical emergency" they mention is Artie attempting suicide by stabbing himself with a kitchen knife 13 times.

What makes a guy stab himself 13 times? He must've been in a really messed up place. You gotta imagine that there are plenty of other ways to off yourself that wouldn't involve as much pain.

Artie's history is pretty brutal stuff. He was a cocaine addict for quite some time, including the time he was a cast member on Mad TV. He was also a heavy drinker. A few years after he became a regular cast member on The Howard Stern Show, he revealed he was a heroin addict and was depressed over numerous things, including the death of his father.

I totally forgot that Howard Stern was still on the air.
I like Artie. I hope he gets his stuff together.

For some reason, I thought I remembered him dying some years ago. I agree, he seems like a funny guy, just a lot of personal problems. There are two stories Artie told years ago that are absolutely hilarious: -His Ash Wednesday story -His "Pig Cocaine" story. Give those a listen on YouTube. Funny crap.

I think Artie was a huge, huge part of the show. His laugh makes me laugh. But, then again, I sort of miss Jackie. But he won't come back considering Robin still has beef with him.

i did like Jackie. hearing his laugh in the background was always hysterical. same with Artie. the show has a huge void without that person there.
