Hey this is my first post
As a avid collector of wwe figures. I often get asked an annoying and sometimes intimidating question by family relatives and friends
That question is "why are you still buying toys"
I have tried different replies like I dont play with them i just like collecting them but they still do not understand and I get labeled as a geek or immature
Well does this happen to anyone else and if so, how do you deal with it

I've never been asked that by any family or friends. Back before I got injured at UPS I did have one co-Worker who used to try an bust my b@lls, because on my lunch break I'd buy tons of Batman/DC figures at a TRU & comic shop I had on my route. But I never let him get to me. I just let it go in one ear and out the other.

Nobody really asks me that. My dad thinks its silly and starts quoting crap from the bible about "When I was a child I did childish things and now that Im an adult I need to adult things blah blah blah". My mom just knows I love wrestling. As long as it doesnt effect me paying my bills she doesnt mind it. Actually knowing what and where to buy/sell things has helped me pay bills during hard times (insert Dusty Promo). Ive had people ask me when I get something off the shelf if "They were going to have to pay double for that later off ebay". I usually just roll my eyes and walk off. Im against scalping but I believe its ok to cover your overhead, even though I might have done it 3 times my entire life.

honestly the psychology behined it would be pretty intresting? I think people collect to fill a void i.e. not having all the cool stuff growing up. Or maybe a need to feel attached to something...hmm got me really thinking now! No wonder my wife hates when I spend money on less important things. My son loves it. he is the only reason I got back in to collecting, but now it gets kind of obssesive. I can see both sides of the coin and maybe we have problems?? like Every one else. Ask them this next time "Would you rather me waste all my time and money on Beer, cigeretts, or even worse Drugs??"

my friends are usually pretty blown away and enjoy looking at all my figures. i get way more poop for liking wrestling then i do for collecting figures. Understand that completely. My buddy is one of those "casual" fans. Watched during Hulkamania and Attitude Eras. He comes over and sees my Legends display and thinks its cool to see guys like Hogan, Savage and Warrior etc....but at the same time, living in the south if we're somewhere watching a PPV like Rumble or Mania he (along with myself) almost act like we're not wrestling fans cause people here give wrestling fans such grief....Which is understandable if you've ever seen how some of them act lol

Make fun of them back. Be like why do you need 200 pairs of shoes, or why don't you hit the gym once in a while. That's what i do every once in a while and it makes them feel like crap so they kind of get a taste of it.

i look at it like this:
1) i could have much more expensive hobbies (hunting, motorsports etc) but i choose to buy small plastic (nearly naked) men.
2) i'd rather spend $20 on fig(s) than 3 beers at a bar. if i were to buy a guitar ($400) that would make me really happy for a little while. but i could also buy a crap-ton of figs for that ammount and spread it out over the course of 6 months and be totally stoked the whole time.
3) i don't smoke, i drink lightly. i pay my bills on time, i'm happily married and my wife actually discouraged me from quitting buying figs a couple times. as has my dad. it's just something i've always done and if Mattel keeps doing what they're doing, i have no reason to stop.
plain and simple, if it makes you happy (and it's legal) do it. screw everyone else...

Im a Rough Carpenter, i build houses. I dont fit the usual Action figure collector mold you see on t.v.... like comic book guy or whatev, but deep down inside, and my friends know, im a geek. my fiancee convinced me to display my closet collection in a display case in the living room this year, the first little while i was nervous and embarrassed.... but no one bothered me about it. and honestly , it was liberating to display them. I feel more myself now... The bottom line is, who cares what anyone else thinks..... if they keep bringing it up, just tell them its getting old and theres gotta be other things they can talk about. Who are they? the lifestyle police? tell them once then they can move on

im a 27 year old elevator mechanic, ive been dating the same girl for 5 years(who used to model in college), i have lots of friends, im not bragging at all im just saying most of us dont fit the "stereotype" of the "dork" who buys toys. my friends make fun of me but they dont really bust on me because they know its my hobby. If someone really bugs you just be like "listen i know its kind of odd for me to collect these things but its what i like and at least im not a junkie or a deadbeat" thats my logic. theres alot worse things to spend your money on than action figures.

I always wonder why I continue to do it. I was kind of spoiled and was bought just about every toy as a kid. But my parents are just about the least materialistic people alive. So why do I buy, buy, buy. Oh yeah, and I only stopped collecting during my High School years (the toys were boring then anyways ;D). When I was in college, I started up again (Spawn and new Star Wars). At that time time toys were becoming more accepted and since my parents didn't care, everyone else could you know what....

Yeah I hear you on that loosing intrest in toys in high school, well not because they were bad per say. I didnt even know what was out then. I was intrested in drinking and chasing Tail all the way through college. I never even thought about them, but after I settled down and my son was about 2 we took a stroll down memory lane for Me,(the Toy Isale). Its also intresting that you had the toys you wanted growing up, I guess for you(one of the lucky ones) it was commen place and if its fullfilling why stop. honestly the psychology behined it would be pretty intresting? I think evaluating the psychology is pretty interesting. I have always loved wrestling and since the time I started watching I have always collected wrestling toys. My dad and I actually got into collecting Star Wars toys in the 90s together and it was just our thing we did together because we never had a lot of the same interests outside of figure hunting which we both loved. At no point have I ever not collected figures, it's always been my hobby since I was little and now I do it at 26. In terms of filling a void though, not really for me personally, I just like to have things I dig immortalized in action figure form. It's like getting to display my passion as a fan on my shelf, and I like that. I have a Patrick Kane and Julius Peppers Sports Pick on a shelf just above my wrestling and comic figures. Dexter, Deadpool, CM Punk, if I like something or support something I want a figure of it. I don't know why, but I do. I just have always been this way and had this hobby. I played football and hockey in high school and then hockey in college and now I would say I'm a pretty successful business person, but all the while, I collected wrestling figures, played video games, and read comic books. All my close friends know about my hobbies but you would have no idea if you were to meet me on the street. Everyone has hobbies or quirks and I think if someone is judging you for yours then them. It's one thing for your friends to bust your balls, primarily because that is all me and my friends do, but it's another for someone to outright judge you. Don't put up with it because there is nothing wrong with your hobby, and you are definitely not alone. Also, it took me a long time to tell my girlfriend about both my love for wrestling and collecting. Primarily because I let people approach me if they want to talk about either because of the negative connotations but also because people who don't get it judge. Luckily I got to keep her around because, while she busted my balls about it, she now watches Raw with me on Mondays. I do agree though, it's a lot easier to tell people you collect action figures than it is to tell them you are a 26 year old WWE fan. I have actually had people make comments to me at WWE events. Those people make me laugh the most. Again, just be confident and don't sweat it, there is nothing at all wrong with what you love.

It's a badge of honor in my mind. That being said, immaturity isn't about a hobby. It's about how a person handles the important aspects of life. Being a good parent, spouse, paying bills, not getting into legal trouble--that is how maturity is defined. If someone wants to give me heat over my figures, he or she must also be willing to talk about how they can't get through a weekend without being wasted, how she/he bought a car or dress they really couldn't afford.

yeah my friend who is really blunt talks poop saying "you're house would look nicer if you got rid of the toys" meanwhile when he's here he looks at them and talks about the wrestler and how the figure is a good representation of the wrestler. I used to get looked at, but in my town I am pretty well known as "that wrestling guy" simply because I know everything there is to know with having a decent exposure of the business from having family members in the biz and that I have trained. So I don't really get critcized all that much because people respect that I follow what I love.

I think the thing that bothers me more is me worrying that someone I know from school etc. will see my buying figs from my local target/kmart.
