RE: Wanna Earn My Respect?
Respect.
It’s just one word, but in this business it’s crucial. In this business it’s that one word that can make or break a man. When you step into a room it isn’t your attitude or your skill that precedes you, it’s that aura of respect that you’ve built up over the years. That’s what makes people stop in the street and take notice, that’s what gets you the endorsement deals and the interviews and all that extra crap.
It’s all about respect.
The thing about respect is that it can’t be taken. It isn’t going to just magically appear to you one morning. No, respect can only be gained in one simple way.
It has to be earned.
You can’t really write up a guide on how to earn respect because it’s different for everyone. But the most common way to earn respect is tenacity. It’s that willingness that no matter how badly you get beaten you step back into that ring and you do it all over again. It’s that willingness to just keep on fighting, to just keep on giving, to just go that extra step whether your body can take it or not.
That’s what respect is all about.
But of course, what does any of this have to do with That Purple Stuff?
Well, it’s very simple.
I’m not a tag team wrestler. I’ve made that clear in the past. It isn’t my forte, it isn’t my preference. I didn’t get into this business so I could share my success with somebody else, I came into this business so I could stand there and shout that I did it all myself, that I was better than the rest. A partner just hinders that idea. But that isn’t the only reason I don’t team up very often.
I don’t respect a lot of people.
I’ve been doing this for four years now. In that time I’ve wrestled a lot of men. I’ve beaten a lot of men and, although it pains me to say this, I’ve lost to a fair few as well. But during that time very few have earned my respect. Under a dozen people I’d say off the top of my head. In four years of this business less than a dozen men have earned my respect.
And only four of them are part of the current WFWF active roster.
Now maybe you understand why I don’t do tag teams. Because the only people I trust having my back on that apron, or risking the win in that ring, are people that have earned my respect. Which limits my choices quite significantly.
Me and Hutton Brown, we have a little bit of history. We’ve clashed in singles competition twice. Once in the XWA, once here in the WFWF. We’re one match apiece. But do I respect him?
Do I respect Hutton Brown?

The Date: February 28th, 2011
The Event: XWA A Night of Appreciation for Mr. West
It had been a long night. A long arduous and exhausting night. Two hours ago Trace Demon has been just another lackey to the Legion, just another cog in the wheel that is the XWA. He wasn’t anything special here, he was just enough body being fed to the juggernaut that is Hutton Brown.
But in this business, you blink and you miss it.
Because now, Trace Demon was the man who stepped out into that ring and not only took Hutton Brown to the limit but had beaten him. Trace Demon was the man who had turned his back on the Legion and laid out half of the group in the process.
Simply put, Trace Demon was the man.
But now he was the man whose entire body was aching being checked over by a trainer who looked strangely like Doc Brown. Maybe the DeLorean was out back and he had to go forward in time to stop himself from going back in time, marrying his mother, fathering himself and taking over the world!
Wow, those films could have been so much weirder than they were.
Doc Brown: I really wish you guys would take it easier out there.
Trace Demon: Not gonna happen Doc, this isn’t MMA, we don’t get three month breaks.
Unless you’re Alex Sean or DGX.
Hutton Brown: Well I’m impressed.
Trace Demon looked towards the doorway where Hutton stood. He was battered and bruised but still had a slight smile on his face. He didn’t look like someone who had just lost, he looked like someone who had had the time of his life in that ring. And he did, every time he stepped out there.
Trace Demon: Well that’s why I do this Hutton, the impress you.
Hutton let out an unexpected laugh at the blatant sarcasm.
Hutton Brown: Well that is good to hear.
Trace Demon: So you’re here why? Wanted to congratulate me on beating your ass?
Hutton Brown: Actually yes, I did.
Trace wanted to make some smart ass comment, he really did. But the idea that Hutton wanted to congratulate him was too good to be true. The great Hutton Brown showing some humility? It was a moment for the ages.
Hutton Brown: You showed me up, no shame in that. Can’t win them all no matter how hard you try.
Trace Demon: I’m shocked.
Hutton Brown: There’s something you’ve got to learn about me Trace. Something I picked up on long ago. A little something about respect.
Respect.
Hutton Brown: What do you know about respect Trace?
Respect is crucial. It’s the cement that holds this business together.
Trace Demon: I know that it’s earned out in that ring.
Hutton Brown: Again, I’m impressed. You see Trace, it takes a lot to earn my respect. Out there tonight, you made a good run at it.
Trace Demon: What crushed skull did it for you? Your own, Drake’s or the expendable Legionnaire’s?
Another laugh follows before Hutton extends his hand.
Hutton Brown: Let’s just say a little bit of everything.
Looking down at the hand Trace pondered Hutton’s offer of respect. Did he respect Hutton? No, not quite. He knew Hutton could get it done in the ring; he’d pushed him to the limit a mere hour ago. But that wasn’t quite enough. Trace never knew what triggered someone gaining his respect; he just knew when it happened. And right now, Hutton wasn’t quite there yet.
Trace Demon: I’ll see you out there again Hutton, bring your A-game.
Trace shook his hand. Whether he respected Hutton or not he’d be foolish to turn down such a sign of respect.
Hutton Brown: Next time Trace, you won’t see me; you’ll be too busy sleeping on the mat.
It was Trace’s turn to laugh. Hutton was definitely someone he could respect; he just had to see that special something. As Hutton walked out of the trainer’s room Trace knew that they’d be meeting again. He just didn’t expect it to be on his home turf.

The Date: 13th May 2011
The Event: WFWF Hybrid
It had been three months since their first encounter and that time Trace Demon had come out on top. Going into the match he was feeling great, on top of the world, ready to make it two and zero against Hutton Brown. But that isn’t exactly how it turned out.
No, tonight Hutton Brown took the victory and he was going to celebrate in style. With a set of twins alongside, one draped over either arm, Hutton sauntered through the corridor. But a very familiar face blocked his path. Trace Demon, looking less than pleased, stood stony faced. There was little doubt in Hutton’s mind that he was going to walk past without hearing him out.
Trace Demon: Hutton.
Hutton Brown: Give us a minute ladies. The men have to talk business.
The twins make some fuss about being told to get lost but they walk along, scowling at Trace as they pass. Turning his attention to Hutton his expression swaps from stony faced and emotionless to a faint grin.
Trace Demon: Twins?
Hutton Brown: Every guy’s dream is just another day in the life of Hutton Brown. I was thinking of bringing them into the XWA as my valets.
Trace Demon: Well they’d certainly boost the ratings.
Hutton Brown: I doubt you wanted to talk about the twins though.
Trace nods. He’s silent for a few moments, pondering his words.
Trace Demon: You remember what you said to me, three months back.
Hutton Brown: That the next time we met I’d leave you sleeping?
Trace Demon: Well, that as well I suppose. I was talking about the other thing.
Hutton Brown: The other thing?
Respect.
Trace Demon: You told me that respect is earned in that ring, that three months ago I’d earned yours. Well tonight, when you stepped in there and took me to the limit, when you beat me fair and square, when you did exactly what you said you’d do. You earned mine.
Trace didn’t quite understand it. He’d never paid any attention to what triggered someone to gain his respect. It just kind of happened. And in that ring, when Hutton Brown had beaten him in the place he made his name, it clicked. Hutton Brown had earned his respect. He’d shown tenacity, he’d shown determination but most importantly he’d demonstrated that... something. That weird little thing that triggers respect... just went off.
Hutton Brown: You mean I didn’t have it before. I feel insulted man.
Trace grinned before holding his hand out, an offering of mutual respect that Hutton gladly accepted.
Hutton Brown: If you don’t mind man, I’m gonna go celebrate like I’m DGX and I’ve got a full bag, if you get what I mean.
Trace Demon: Haha, have fun dude. Don’t tire yourself out.
Hutton laughs, slaps Trace on the shoulder and turns around, walking off and rejoining the twins.
Trace Demon: And Hutton!
Hutton turns.
Trace Demon: I want the rubber match!
Hutton Brown: Anytime.
Fade to Black

Do I respect Hutton Brown?
Plain and simple, yes I do. Hutton Brown can bring the fight anytime and anywhere so if I’ve got to rely on somebody to have my back, then he’s my first choice.
Respect is earned. In our line of work it’s earned inside that ring through hard work, determination and tenacity. It’s not an easy thing to get. I reserve my respect for those who have earned it. I can’t tell you how, I’m sure as hell not going to sit down and write you a list of tips. If you want respect then you need to step into that ring and earn it, take it.
I respect Hutton Brown. So when I step into that ring I know that he’ll have my back, that I can trust him nearly as much as I trust my own abilities.
Shawn Malakai, Cameron Stone. You’ve got a chance to earn what less than a dozen men have. You’ve got the chance to join the very short list of people who have my respect. It’s a very exclusive list.
Respect.
Yes, it’s one word. But when you step into that ring with me it’s the most important word you will ever know. When you step into that ring you need to go all out and try and earn my respect or I’ll beat the meaning of the word into you.
Respect. Come and get it.
