First off, this isn't going to be a thread where I argue about one or the other. No this is going to be my analysis on what is the first major battle of comicbook film movies. Next year we have The Avengers, a film 5 years and pictures in the making, and The Dark Knight Rises, the last of Nolan's trilogy.
I'm gonna say it, I'm a Batman fan, much more so than The Avengers, however I have to say, having seen all of the films leading to TA apart from Thor, which I'll see when its on DVD, all of the films, from Ironman to Captain America, they have all been quality films. Marvel have taken the film business and made it into a comic book series, which I for one love. They have thought it out and in 5 years, they will have released 6 films in the franchise, and depending on how successful it will be, a sequel is almost in stone (not to touch on Ironman, Cap and Thor sequels). I went into all of these films knowing nothing about the characters, and loving every moment. Hell, even the simple act of putting post credit scenes in to wet the watchers tastebuds is just perfect, I remember when I saw the pc scene from IM2 I was going crazy for Thor, and I had no idea who the Thor was?! In all, Marvel have taken an idea, a comicbook idea and made it into film, something we've never seen before, and they've did it successfully.
Now, onto TDKR, like I said I am a Batman fan, always have been and probably always will be, however I do feel both Nolans films have been nothing more than 'good', he did revitalise the genre and the Batman character. And ofcourse TDKR is going to do well, I mean we're a full year from release and stores are already putting up DVD pre-orders, people are everywhere trying to get the smallest piece of news, this film is a massive ball of hype so far. With this hype we're now getting spoilers on a daily basis, therefore alot of people are going to be walking into the film knowing more than half of whats happening, and this is still a year away!
Alot of people feel that TDKR is going to slaughter all records and destroy TA in sales and all of this stuff, but think about it, TDKR has taken 5 years to make, in this time Marvel have given us Ironman 1 and 2, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America. The Avengers has a massive 5 films that all did well leading up to it, TDKR just has a bunch of real Batman fans, but more so, a hoard or know-nothing people who will see it just because of the name.
What I mean by all of this is that although TDKR has much more hype buiding for it, much more interest building, does The Avengers have a better film build? In my opinion, I think so.
But I am excited for both films, and next year will for sure be the year of the comic book film, with not only these two mammoths being released, but also the Amazing Spider-Man, which too already looks to be a great film.
