That's a sad situation.
What's scary is my friend and I, when we've both got a free night (girlfriends are busy, both of us off work) we hang out and play video games until the sun comes up. We even call it "marathoning." That's pretty scary.
I'll be completely honest and shell out the fact that this won't change my habits at all, but I feel for his family.

Longest I ever have played is about 6 hours which was years ago, and that only when I got a new game. Even then, I wouldnt stay in the same position, and I sure wouldnt deprive myself of food, drink or toilet.

Read this already but it's still a sad story.
I play games a lot but I don't think I'm at much risk as I do exercise every morning and night.

Did not know you could die from sitting in the same position for hours.

This is quite scary to think about.
I wish there were more details about his health status though as I'm sure there must have been other factors that played a part in his death.
I'm sure something like this will probably scare parents into buying a Kinect for their kids lol.

the guy must've been obese or extremely out of shape. it's essentially a stroke of the lung he had, which could obviously have been with held with exercise.

It's a crazy story.
I've never played a game for that long [probably 3-4 hours max] but I was always moving around since I would get restless after a while in the same position.
RIP to him and it is nice that his family is trying to raise awareness.

This is why PS3 is better. [/Trolling]
But seriously, 12 hours is just plain unhealthy. 4 hours, and that's on a really slow day, since I'm deep into Final Fantasy 8,and save points are few and far between, and hell, I need to at least eat, and get a good drink of water every hour I'm playing, since my room can get like a goddamn sweatbox. But back to the point. 12, excessive. Poor poor man, He never knew of the outside world......actually, better he didn't. :x

If anything, you guys don't have to change the behavior, just take a break every two hours or so and take a walk to get something to drink in the fridge or do some jumping jacks or something. This doesn't just go to you, it goes to everyone, I just reblogged your post as friendly advice.

I know you're all just going to jump all over my cock and claim you knew the kid and tell me you weep for his family, but it's not sad "imo". This kid had to be horribly out of shape for his body to simply shut down on him. Don't give me this "oh he was a productive member of society" bullcrap either. He sat on his fat ass and played a game until he fell over, quite literally. It's his own fault. It's past the point of tragedy. Much like Winehouse and Dunn, when it's your own stupidity that causes your demise, I have no sympathy. Stop blaming the gaming industry, stop blaming everyone except for the miserable parents and fat ing lazy children who make no effort do anything in positive health for themselves. 3...2...1....bash.

You don't have to be out of shape, or even fat to die from a pulmonary embolism. Being out of shape does increase the risk, but it kills perfectly healthy people all the time. People who fly on airplanes a lot are probably the biggest risk. But lots of people who work in offices, and sit in an office chair 8-12 hours a day working in front of a computer suffer the same fate. Matter of fact, it just happened to a 39 year old lawyer where I work recently, and he was in very good shape.
