The debut edition of Global Wrestling League on FX opened with fireworks and “MegaMan” by Lil Wayne played throughout the arena.
Bret Hart: Hello ladies and gentlemen! I am Bret “The Hitman” Hart joined by newcomer Nigel McGuinness.
Nigel McGuinness: Thanks Bret. The wrestling world is about to be changed globally tonight. Talent like Jeff Hardy, CM Punk, Daniel Bryan, and John Cena are about to change the world of wrestling tonight in the GWL ring.
BH: Let’s turn it to the GWL Ring Announcer, Howard Finkel.
Howard Finkel: The following contest is scheduled for one fall and is a Singles match.
“Only One Can Judge” by Jim Johnston began to play throughout the arena.
HF: Introducing to the ring, from Marletta, Georgia, weighing in at 223 pounds, and at 6 foot 1 inch tall, this is Cody Rhodes!
Cody Rhodes walked to the ring with a frown behind the powerful mask to fill in the mysterious look. Rhodes looked at fans with brown paper bags on and continued to frown. The crowd booed Rhodes so badly that the Security Guards had to throw fans down onto the floor.
Howard Finkel handed Cody Rhodes the microphone once the music stopped.
Cody Rhodes: You pathetic pieces of trash should wear those brown paper bags with faces on them. It makes you look better than usual. I hate to reign on your parade, but I will defeat my opponent successfully tonight and walk out of here one step closer to-
“Take A Fall” by Dale Oliver and Serg Salinas interrupted Cody Rhodes.
HF: Introducing to the ring, from Perterborough, Ontario, Canada, weighing in at 240 pounds, and at 6 foot 0 inches tall, this is Bobby Roode!
Bobby Roode gave the fans in the front row high fives as he walked down the entrance ramp. A fan in the front row gave Roode a brown paper bag, and Roode ripped it apart before putting up the “Fortune 4” hand taunt towards Rhodes. Roode rolled into the ring and smirked at Rhodes before taking his Fortune shirt off.
Howard Finkel exited the ring, and the match was about to begin. The referee signaled the beginning of the match.
Roode walked into the center of the ring and offered a handshake to Rhodes, but Rhodes refused before punching Roode in the face. Rhodes made it clear that he had no intentions on being Roode’s friend with the disrespect. Roode clotheslined Rhodes into the turnbuckle, then Roode ran to the other side and Stinger Splashed into Rhodes. Rhodes appeared to be very hurt and fell to the ground. Roode knee dropped onto Rhodes and went for a pinfall.
Referee: 1...2...
BH: That was so close to a 3 count!
NM: Close only gets you so far. Roode better step up his game if he intends on winning this match, and the same is for Rhodes.
Roode picked Rhodes up off the ground and set Rhodes up for a powerbomb. Roode had Rhodes on his shoulders when Rhodes countered the powerbomb with a hurricanrana! Rhodes went for a pinfall.
Referee: 1...2..
BH: Another close pinfall, but from Rhodes this time.
NM: Rhodes should be able to take control of the match now and get some offense in.
Rhodes stomped on Roode’s face multiple times before yelling at him.
CR: How does it feel Roode?!
Rhodes quickly picked Roode up and threw him into the turnbuckle. Roode tried to recover in the turnbuckle, but Rhodes ran at him with a clothesline and Roode ducked out of the way. Roode threw multiple punches at Rhodes in the turnbuckle before throwing Rhodes into the ropes. Rhodes sprung back at Roode, and Roode hit Rhodes with a Double R Spinebuster. Roode flipped Rhodes over and hooked in the Arm trap crossface.
Referee: Do you want to tap?
CR: No!
BH: This could end very quickly if Rhodes doesn’t get to the ropes in time.
NM: Roode is showing off a very good submission here. I have seen some of Roode’s matches and he ends them with this submission!
Rhodes tried to get his hand to the rope, but he failed. Roode began to yell at Rhodes now.
BR: TAP OUT RHODES!!
Referee: Do you tap Cody?
Rhodes didn’t answer the Referee, so the Referee signaled the end of the match.
HF: The winner of this match via submission is Bobby Roode!
“Take A Fall” by Dale Oliver and Serg Salinas begins to play as the Referee raised Roode’s hand.
Roode rolled out of the ring and gave fans high fives once again as he walked to the back. The Referee checked on Rhodes, and had to help him up.
The camera moved to the back where GWL Interviewer, Gene Okerlund stood with Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team, Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas.
Gene Okerlund: Hello ladies and gentlemen! I’m here with Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team, Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas. These two men compete in a tag team match tonight against the Motor City Machine Guns. I wanted to ask you two, what is your feeling going into this match against the Motor City Machine Guns?
Charlie Haas: Well, Gene, I like to think that Shelton and I are the best tag team in the world. We both have had success as wrestlers around the entire world. Shelton and I have both fought fantastic teams like the Kings of Wrestling, The Guerrero’s, and many other fantastic teams over the years. The Motor City Machine Guns are a fantastic team as well, but I expect Shelton and I to pick up the win tonight and advance ourselves closer to the GWL World Championship.
GO: What are your thoughts Shelton?
Shelton Benjamin: Gene, I have wrestled wrestlers like Triple H, Ric Flair, Randy Orton, Edge, and many other legends of this business and I have many plans for my career here in the Global Wrestling League. As for the tag team match tonight, Charlie and I will sweep past the Motor City Machine Guns very quickly.
GO: Who do you think will win in the main event tonight, Jeff Hardy or Daniel Bryan?
CH: I think Daniel Bryan will take this one. He has the wrestling skills that people dream of having. Jeff Hardy is a spot monkey looking for a place to “entertain” fans with flying type of moves. Daniel Bryan will prove that pure wrestling is what he is made of. Go ask Nigel at the announcers table if Daniel Bryan can wrestle and he will tell you that Daniel Bryan is the real deal!
GO: Shelton, who do you think will win?
SB: It doesn’t matter who wins because I will be GWL World Champion very soon. Nobody in this league can stop me because I’m the Gold Standard. To simplify your question, Jeff Hardy would be easier to defeat, but Daniel Bryan won’t be extremely tough to beat either. It’s time to head to the ring Charlie, let’s go.
GO: Thanks for the interview. This is Gene Okerlund sending it back to you Bret and Nigel.
BH: Man does Shelton sounds cocky!
NM: I think Shelton isn’t cocky Bret, he just takes a lot of pride in what he does. Cocky wouldn’t even be the right word for Shelton, it’s an ego.
BH: He does have an ego Nigel. I don’t think he will be able to back up what he thinks he can do though against the Motor City Machine Guns.
NM: We’ll find out up next, let’s send it to the ring for some tag team action!
“T.N.T.” by AC/DC began to play in the arena.
HF: Introducing to the ring, weighing in at a combination of 497 pounds, they are Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin, Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team!
Charlie Haas walked to the ring and gave the fans high fives, but Shelton Benjamin just walked to the ring with a smirk on his face. Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team entered the ring and Haas taunted, but Benjamin walked over to the corner.
BH: Shelton is a piece of crap! Charlie Haas is going to get screwed in this match by his partner, I can just feel it in the atmosphere.
NM: Chill out Bret! Shelton just doesn’t feel that the fans deserve to see him in action. Shelton wouldn’t cost himself this match because he wants to win this match and add to his record.
“Motorcity” by Adam Skaggs played through the arena.
HF: Introducing to the ring, weighing in at a combination of 420 pounds, they are Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley, the Motor City Machine Guns!
Chris Sabin and Alex Shelley walked onto the top of the entrance stage and did the Machine Gun pose before walking onto the entrance ramp. Sabin and Shelley both gave fans high fives before looking at Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team. Benjamin and Haas were in their corner, and Sabin and Shelley went to their corner before Howard Finkel left the ring.
The referee signaled the bell and the match started. Chris Sabin and Shelton Benjamin started the match off with a lock-up. Benjamin took advantage and pushed Sabin onto the ground. Sabin sat in the corner and looked at Benjamin. Sabin tagged Shelley in and Benjamin just waited patiently. Shelley ran towards Benjamin with a Clothesline, but Benjamin ducked and turned around in the air and kicked Shelley in the side of the head. Benjamin went for a quick pinfall.
Referee: 1...2..
BH: A very close pinfall for the cocky guy.
NM: Haas wouldn’t have gotten a two count on Alex Shelley yet.
Shelley got up and traded punches with Shelton Benjamin, but Benjamin ducked a punch and went to the backside of Shelley and German suplexed Shelley over the top rope and onto the floor. Sabin ran into the ring determined to fight Benjamin. Haas entered the ring too and both members of Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team gang beat Sabin. Shelley hadn’t moved at all on the outside, so Benjamin took advantage and threw Shelley into the ring. Benjamin handed Shelley to Haas and Benjamin missed a Superkick to Shelley’s head and accidentally hit Haas. Shelley fell into the ropes, and Benjamin attempted a Superkick to the back of Shelley’s head and was successful. Benjamin put Shelley in the top corner and ran from the other corner with a Stinger splash. Shelley fell down and Benjamin went for a pinfall.
Referee: 1...2...
Sabin laid on the outside, and Benjamin picked Shelley up and T-Bone suplexed him and went for another pinfall.
Referee: 1...2...3!!
HF: Your winner, Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team, Shelton Benjamin and Charlie Haas.
“T.N.T” by AC/DC started to play.
Haas entered the ring and celebrated with Benjamin. They both had their arms up, and Benjamin Superkicked Haas in the head on purpose this time. Benjamin grabbed a microphone from Howard Finkel and began to speak.
SB: Charlie, I am better than you and you know it. I like to think that I’m the best in this team and now that Wrestling’s Greatest Tag Team doesn’t exist, I can go forward and become GWL World Champion. Prepare yourself Haas because I will be taking you out for good and forcing you out of this league soon enough.
Shelton Benjamin dropped the mic and rolled out of the ring before walking backstage.
BH: I can’t believe I just witnessed Shelton Benjamin turn on his best friend and tag team partner, Charlie Haas.
NM: You better believe it because Shelton is destined to go straight to the top without that thorn in his side.
The screen splits as Jeff Hardy and Daniel Bryan prepare for their match. Daniel Bryan walked towards the ring for his entrance and the splitscreen stopped and the lights went out.
“The Final Countdown” by Europe began to play and the lights flashed on and off before the singing began.
Daniel Bryan entered the entrance ramp and looked into the ring.
HF: This is the main event of the evening, and is for the GWL World Championship, Introducing first, he is from Aberdeen, Washington, weighing in at 192 pounds, and at 5 foot 10 inches tall, this is “The American Dragon” Daniel Bryan!
Daniel Bryan jogged around the ring and gave fans high fives to warm up before entering the ring. Bryan entered the ring and stood in his corner.
A countdown began before “Another Me” by Jeff Hardy and Dale Oliver began to play.
HF: Introducing to the ring, from Cameron, North Carolina, weighing in at 215 pounds, and at 6 foot 2 inches tall, this is GWL World Champion, “The Charismatic Enigma” Jeff Hardy!
Jeff Hardy walked onto the entrance stage. Hardy walked into the ring slowly and took the GWL World Championship off. Howard Finkel exited the ring for the main event of the evening. Hardy stood in the corner and stared at Bryan. Bryan and Hardy looked ready to go, and the referee signaled the bell to start the match.
Bryan and Hardy started with a lock up. Bryan put Hardy down, but Hardy formed a bridge and kicked Bryan in the chest. Hardy stood up and ran toward Bryan to get this match going. Bryan stood in the corner and grabbed his chin before beginning a series of kicks to the legs of Hardy. Hardy fell down and Bryan took advantage by punching Hardy several times. Hardy began to bleed and Bryan picked him up. Bryan set Hardy up and Belly to Belly suplexed him across the ring. Hardy balanced on his lower legs and tried to get comfortable, but Bryan applied a surfboard to Hardy.
Referee: Do you tap?
Jeff Hardy: No.
Bryan let go of the submission, but he did put Hardy in the corner and kicked at him. Hardy appeared extremely hurt, so the referee checked on him.
Referee: Do you want to go on?
JH: Yes, I want to go on.
Hardy held his chest and Bryan took advantage by kicking him in the thigh which set him up, and then Bryan kicked Hardy in the chest. Hardy fell to the ground and it appeared as if Hardy couldn’t take anymore of the match.
NM: Jeff Hardy can’t take these kicks like I can.
BH: Jeff definitely isn’t going to be able to keep taking this pain.
Bryan picked Hardy up and German suplexed him, then Bryan locked the LeBell Lock in on Hardy. Hardy looked like he was passed out, and the referee checked on him.
Referee: Do you give up Jeff?
Jeff Hardy didn’t answer and the referee called for the bell. Bryan wouldn’t let go of the LeBell Lock though. Security had to get Bryan off of Hardy immediately. The referee handed Bryan the GWL World Championship.
“The Final Countdown” by Europe began to play.
Bryan exited the ring with the GWL World Championship. Hardy was being put onto a stretcher after the match and carried out. Bryan went behind the curtain and Hardy was pushed out on a stretcher as the show faded to black.
