The current state of horror is definitely the weakest I can remember. It's to the point that if a movie is simply shot well, reviewers and such rave over it. Example being something like The Innkeepers. That was a really bland and boring movie but because it was shot with polished cameras and didn't look like it was made with a camcorder, folks raved over it.

I think that would apply to films like The Conjuring moreso than Innkeepers. The only real positive thing I read about Innkeepers was about the chemistry between the characters and the dialog but not that it was shot well. I did like that element but the film did bore and ultimately went nowhere. The Conjuring however was shot very well but it wasn't the least bit original but it received crazy good reviews. I do agree people are grasping for good horror to the point that when they see average films or shock films like the Evil Dead remake they go bananas and act as if they just watched The Exorcist for the first time.

So, I have started a quest I may end up regretting. I am trying to find the worst/most sadistic horror movie ever made. I'm compiling a list to look at, and so far I have 3 that have potential on paper. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm not really a fan of really bad sadistic horror movies but at the top of my head I can think of the Collector and Collection and all of the Wrong Turn movies

Really enjoyed Sinister, I thought Ethan Hawke was great in this. Shame that Vincent D'Onofrio only had two scenes, but that's okay, it was a good slow burn, and the 'Mr Boogie' character was freaky as hell.

But it's been my experience that the more you dig, the more you realize just how deep and dark the hole is.

Anybody see 'Stitches'? It's as somewhat decent low budget comedy slasher. Some fun gags and solid gory kills. It's worth a gander.

Finally watched Lords Of Salam.....wtf. Besides the great audio that goes along with the film there was nothing to get excited about. I think Zombie was trying too hard for a Kubrik type of feel??? I don't know it was interesting but nothing particularly haunting or scary... Really enjoyed Sinister, I thought Ethan Hawke was great in this. Shame that Vincent D'Onofrio only had two scenes, but that's okay, it was a good slow burn, and the 'Mr Boogie' character was freaky as hell. I actually enjoyed Sinister. I thought it was well done. I'm a hardcore horror fan. I love the Italian stuff. Lucio Fulci is great but I freaking love Dario Argento. The last real horror movies I watched and loved was the Insidious films.

Good stuff mate. I've heard good things about the Maniac remake; anyone here agree? It's on sale with a T-shirt at my DVD store.

Loved the Conjuring and Maniac. Insidious is one of my favorite modern horrors but the sequel didn't live up to the original

Really? I thought both were fantastic. I suppose it could be the glut of garbage and utter crape that we horror fans have to wade through to get to a decent film that made it seem better. Really recent horror has all been relative to me. 1 of 20 new flicks may actually stand up to a classic film but because I watch most of them, there usually seems to be 2 or 3 that I think are relatively good to how crapty most of them are.

Nice to see some fans of Sinister in here, I thought it was brilliant. One of the most disturbing films I've seen in a while though. Apparently a sequel is in the works.

Okay, thanks for that, il keep that in mind. That'd be good, a sequel for Sinister, which, handled the right way, should be good.

I watched Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead today. Second time I've seen it. It's definitely a shock fest. The real horror elements come towards the end. It's supposed to be satire. A lot of offensive humor. Not for the easily offended.
Do I recommend it? That's a hard question. I can appreciate it but I won't speak for anyone else. If you've seen any Troma films you know what you're in for.
EDIT: It's a musical too. With some catchy tunes IMO.

So I watched Children of Sorrow. Been looking forward to this since we had Bill on our show. I will see I don't think this is for everyone. Its a found footage style religious cult flick. It takes a little bit to get going but when it does Father Simon (Bill Oberst Jr.) Really does have a way to get under your skin. Once the first death hits it goes bat crap crazy really fast. If you get a chance check it out!!
