Inside of a dark and murky arcade, one light shines above a young Carter Contra as he puts a disgusting looking quarter into the thin coin slot of a “Simpsons Arcade Game” machine. This quarter had meant everything to Carter, as it was his last one to spend. He found it on the side of the road the day before. It was really sticky, and probably had some sort of skin rash attached to it, but Carter didn’t care, he just wanted to play.
The screen on the arcade game flashed in Carter’s face. After only thirty seconds of play, Carter lost his first life.
“Eat My Shorts”
“Darn it!” Carter said, with an angry look in his eye.
He continued to play the game, and then…
“Eat My Shorts”
He had lost one more life. “Stupid machine!”
Carter, now on his last life, fought as hard as he could, but it was no use.
“Eat My Shorts”
“Aww, man. That was my last quarter.”
“Hey kid! Stop talkin’ to yaself! Ya lost the friggin game, and ya got no more quarters, so get out!”
“But Mr. Smithers! I just…”
“Get out!”
“You’re stupid!”
“And you’re poor.”
“You were a lot funnier last time I was here…”
As Carter began to leave, a kid roughly Carter’s age came up to Carter and began speaking.
“Hey, um, I noticed you ran out of quarters. I would love to have someone to play the Simpsons game with, and I have two quarters, so, um, do you want to play?”
Carter now had a major gleam of happiness in his eye as he excitedly responded.
“Yes! Yes please! Thank you!”
“No problem. Hey, what’s your name?”
“It’s Carter, and yours?
“Harrison. Come on, let’s play.”
Carter and Harrison walked up to the Simpsons game and began playing.
(Insert generic montage with “Eye of the Tiger” playing in the background.)
The montage is over, and they are now on the final boss of the game.
“Come on, we only have two more hits to go!” yelled Carter.
“I know! Let’s do this!” Harrison yelled back.
Carter and Harrison are rapidly hitting their buttons and moving the joysticks. They slam on the buttons harder and harder until they finally kill the final boss.
“YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YESSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”Carter and Harrison yell in unison as they stare at their completed game. With a huge grin on their faces, the camera fades to modern day Contra, looking at the match card for “Down in the Treme” for the first time, with a huge grin on his face.
“I’m in a tag team match, and my partner is David Brennan! Sa-weet!” said an excited Contra.
Just then, a shadow figure appeared in the door of the locker room where Contra was.
“Hey kid, I hear you are my tag partner for the new show.” Said David Brennan.
“Wow, you couldn’t have come at a better time.”
“I’ve actually been here for two hours waiting for you to look at the card.”
“Why would you do that?”
“I’m a showman. Anyway, we both know that this match will be awkward.”
“Why would it be awkward?”
“Well, you are what they call a “good” guy, and I’m pretty much the complete opposite.”
“So? We are both good, and I think that we can win!”
“Wow, you are so innocent, aren’t you?”
“I wouldn’t call myself innocent. My mother died young, my family barely had any money, my only friends for several years were video games, and I think I may have gotten a rash from quarter that I picked up fifteen years ago.”
“Man kid, that’s deep. Either way, you better win at Down in the Treme. I can’t lose my first match in a tag match.”
“I’ll try as hard as possible. Ha! That’s what she said.”
“Your humor is childish.”
“Did you want to hurt my feelings? Because you did.”
“I’m ‘gonna leave before I strangle you.”
“See ya, later!”
David Brennan left the locker room, and Carter began to talk to the invisible camera.
“I’ve actually been in two tag teams in my life. I did it once in a wrestling match, and once more in a video game. When Harrison offered to be my tag team partner several years ago, I had no idea what to say. I had never had anybody I could call a friend before, let alone someone that would be willing to play a game with me. When we beat that game, I felt happier than I had ever felt before, and I imagine it was much of the same for Harrison.
The tag team match I have at Down in the Treme is much different than playing a video game. To win the match, you have to connect with your partner, and to be honest, that may not be happening with David Brennan. He’s a straight up Military man, and that may be bad for our opponents, but it’s also a bit bad for our team. If he doesn’t befriend me, how will we win? I’m gonna try very hard to connect with him, though, so that we can be victorious.
And now comes to the business of our opponents. To be honest, don’t really want to say anything bad about David Roberts. He was in a coma, and I can totally relate to him. My father, before he died, was in a coma. I watched his life slip away, and he couldn’t even say any last words…
And who’s his partner? None other than the “Star of the Show” Richard Shaw. He’s a friggin actor, why is he wrestling? And if he is the “Star of the Show”, than why is he not in the main event? THINK ABOUT YOUR NICKNAME, KIDS!
So all in all, this match will be tough, but my experience in real life tag teams, and the military style of David Brennan will prove to be a tough challenge against “Actor Boy” and, well, I won’t make fun of his partner. Now, I really need to talk to David about our match.”
Carter leaves the locker room and begins looking around for David Brennan.
“David! David? David…”
Carter disappears down a hall as nothing is left but a janitor cleaning up…
