I'm just posting this to get this off my chest, cause i'm feeling really good about it.
So, some of you may or may not know what i do. I work as a developmental service worker, and i'm also in school still. Lately i've been clashing with one of my department heads because i have strong opinions regarding things that they don't like to talk about, such as sexuality and relationships with people who have disabilities. Long story short, she's been finding every way to somehow cut me down if she gets the chance and then she switched my placement from something extremely good, to something at the bottom of the barrell.
Anyway, she really didn't appreciate it because i told her i'm not gonna be her puppet and i'm not gonna conform to what they want me to be. I've been written up for 5 code of conducts in the last month from this woman for apparent "harrassment", three of which were on facebook. So, she took it upon herself to suggest to other teachers and placement coordinators that i might not be ready for placements and of course they'd take her word over mine. However, they did give me an opportunity to prove myself.
We had an assignment where would would have to create a communication device that would be for one of the clients we support. Based on how effective they are, that person would give feedback on it as well as the other staff that work in this agency. For those of you that don't know, this is a communication device.
You might see alot of people with these who have disability, but alot of the times if they are not designed properly, they are almost a detriment to a person. We had a contest, kind of, where the top agency in the province came in and assessed our ideas based on originality, usage of knowledge and effectiveness. We had to provide the feedback that we received from the person using the device, and then let them give us feedback. My "creation" proved to be the most useful, as it was a picture based day planner for a 8 year old girl with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The results were pretty amazing, as she has shown a great amount of decrease in bad behaviors, as well as a much better overall mood.
So i won this thing, along with the placement as per a personal request from the agency i wanted. The look on my one teacher's face was priceless, because little old me.. the guy she felt was the worst fit, didn't look the part (i'm a big dude with a beard) and refused to respect her. Obviously this pissed her off, but i don't care. I refused to back down, and stood up for myself when i had pressure against me.
I just wanted to post this, because i feel really proud right now. I received eligibility for a potential scholarship into a behavioral psychology program in university, and potentially a good paying job at this place that i'm doing my placement.
probably came across as a lot of rambling, but if i posted this on facebook i'd get in poop somehow (there eyes are everywhere). anybody else have an experience like this? it's great to just stick it to the man, nawmeen?
