Was anyone else put off by Cena's remarks about Kane "getting antsy around the holidays and visits to the dentist" making reference to Kane/Glen Jacobs former gimmicks of Christmas Monster and Isaac Yankem? I know that only those who already knew of his past gimmicks would even get the joke, but it still rubbed me the wrong way that they are building Kane back up as this mysterious, raging monster and Cena is making jokes like this about him. It should have been a much more serious promo to build up the fear Kane should instill in his opponents.

The one thing that ercked me about the promo was how Cena was willing to let Kane off if it was a mistake. The guy came down and attacked Cena, but if Kane didn't mean it, Cena would have been cool with it. WTF? Cena needs to get a bit of aggression in his character, and stop being the nciey-nice guy.

Yes they were jokes about his previous gimmicks, and I think Kane suffocating Cena would do the job of making him look like a monster.

While I think Cena needs to stop laughing everything off in his promos, I don't see why the reference to Kane's previous gimmicks is any worse than when Punk did it to Nash a few months back.

I'm sick of the constant references from Punk and Cena in general.

I'm sick of the constant references from Punk and Cena in general. I'm not a big fan of all the breaking kayfabe and 'the fourth wall' just for the sake of a cheap pop myself, tbh; I didn't like it when Cena called Dolph Ziggler a repackaged Nicky from Spirit Squad for instance. Up until that point we were supposed to believe they were totally different people.

I just don't late Cena promos in general these days, he's just to nice and happy.
The references where a little odd but him saying he will just let it go and him not being pissed off/scared of Kane just made Kanes return as this big monster seem less than what it was.

Im ok with the references of past gimmicks because at least it's not like Cena, Punk or anyone else cutting a promo doesn't seem oblivious of the past. We all know the stages of gimmicks Kane and Nash went through and if you weren't around long enough to have that knowledge there's the reminder. Also it sets the impression that the times are different now. Nash and Kane are begining to reinvent themselves later in their careers so I can see how some find it cheap that these guys take the cheap shot of reminding everyone of their previous, sometimes embarrassing gimmicks.

It is a smarky thing to do but it was a quick and easily miss-able comment if you didn't know what what he meant.

At the same time, when you're in the age of the internet, that information is everywhere. Yeah kayfabe exists, to an extent, but it doesn't mean it means much. It's a past idea of protecting identity and playing a character all the time. When most of the wrestlers gimmicks are themselves with "the volume turned up", maybe that's why Kane will never be the big guy. He's a classic gimmick that hasn't evolved with the times like the Undertaker even has. Why does it matter? These references are typical from Cena and it clearly didn't kill the effect of what Kane did.

I laughed at how Cena said that if it was an accident, that he would be cool with it.
Please tell me how someone can walk to the ring, and chokeslam someone "accidently"?

I found nothing wrong with the promo, especially after the way Kane manhandled Cena and how well Cena sold being genuinely terrified of him after he had done it. No issues to me.

It feels as though they've started making these little nods towards the real life on air as a way of engaging people like us who sit here over-analysing things. I think it's okay because, like you say, only the people who are aware of his previous work will get it and those are the people who don't buy into the story on screen anyway.

back in 2004/03 John Cena wouldn't have taken that, he'd come up with an elaborate rap diss.

Breaking the 4th Wall is kind of Punk's gimmick..not Cena's.
They should have had Cena sell the beating and take it completely seriously, not be "willing to let it slide if it was accidental".

I think John Cena making fun of Kane is good because that means that Kane is going to be even more angry.
