I do understand your argument, and coming from a rural area in England I empathise with what you're saying. However, that would be what Congress is for. The Presidential election doesn't really concern the major differences between rural and city life, and as a result I still believe a straight popular vote would be better. Even though the candidate is likely to represent the big cities? The President should transcend cities and rural areas and work based on the good of the USA. One of his jobs is to place legislation he believes is good on the table, then Representatives and Senators with individual districts vote based on whether that legislation is good for the section of the population they represent. That's how the system should work, and a direct popular vote would not impede that, whilst still improving democracy.
