I dismayed to see Amazon charging $17.99 for the new Elites, but now Target has them for the same price. To me, that means Mattel raised the suggested retail price, so everyone is upping their prices.
I was upset when they went from $15 to $16, but $18? That's really pushing it. And TRU is going to charge $20 for their exclusive Michael Cole build-a-figure series. I won't be buying any of those unless I get a 20% off coupon from TRU.

Good thing I only collect figures whom I REALLY want. Me too. I simply can't afford being to be a completionist, or even the way I tried to collect Jakks (1 of everyone and different hairstyles/facepaint, and legends despite never watching or caring about them). I only get impressive new guys/all time favorites/interesting repaints and it's still rather costly. Sure it's fun to go on the hunt sometimes, and I've been more into wrestling since last year, but man does it hit the wallet. Sure, they're superior to Jakks. Sure, costs constantly increase. But IDK how long I'll last... I may soon have to tap out to the high prices. Cause higher SRPs equal even more ridiculous rates from specialty shops and scalpers. |

I didn't buy any, but I found Elite 12 at Target yesterday and they were priced at $15.99. I really don't think the actual MSRP has changed...yet.

I think just the WM set with the build a Cole are going to be $20. Just like the RtWM Rock was more than the rest of the Elites. (Rock was listed as $21.99 on the tag) |

Maybe costs went up for Mattel, thus making the wholesale pricing higher, thus increasing the retail price. Maybe Mattel didn't change their MSRP at all and maybe Target decided to raise the price? I'm willing to ask Mattel, although the design team really doesn't have anything to do with those decisions, they probably have the answer though.
It's funny, at $12 a figure I could probably rationalize buying every guy from every series at retail. However, at $18-20, I can pretty much rationalize not buying a single figure. I just see it as Mattel shooting themselves in the foot.
I have to believe every collector has a breaking point, but I would guess the mass retail consumer, 10 year old little Jimmy, has got to be the one most impacted by these price increases.

I only try to buy a few figures a month, I'm not trying to have a massive collection, but I've started buying a basic here and there instead just because even if I have the money, I really don't want to spend $100 for 5 figures. It's getting out of control. I was happy at 14.87, but seeing 17 and 18 on the tags recently is really making me think about if its even worth it.
