Fraps is the best. Especially if you can get your hands on an official version. I don't know what a 'screen recorder' would be useful for? Maybe if you was drawing in Paint?
Do you mean something to record gameplay?

I use an emulator to play old games, like Pokémon crystal etc, and I wanted to record the gameplay.

The term 'hypercam' comes to mind.

There is an ad for something called the Intensity Shuttle in the latest issue of Game Informer. Not sure if it records gameplay on consoles only or if you can record gameplay on a computer as well. I don't see why you wouldn't be able to but it's $199 so I would definitely look into it first just to make sure. If you can record computer gameplay, then I would totally go with that.

Hypercam doesnt work, when I play it back it's just a white screen. And I was hoping for a free one

Paying to record footage of your desktop computer is poppycock. Windows itself has a program built into it, at least when I had Windows 7 I had one...I forget it's name but it was under Media Manager. On Mac, I use something called "ScreenFlow" and it does me fine. I record 1080p video seamlessly, without any real negative effects on memory.

I use Microsoft Encoder 4. Free version gives you ten minutes of video. So if you record in parts, its perfect

Many emus have built-in recorders now. Although I think most of them only record in 320/240, which is a pretty crummy resolution.
I used Camtasia Recorder to record gameplay footage of Mole Mania (Gameboy game) when I reviewed it last year, and it turned out great! I recommend Camtasia.
