I've said it many times; the only time a specialty match is needed, is if the feud/storyline needs it. Not because "it's on the calendar" (Other than certain ones like the Rumble, Survivor Series, etc.) Not every PPV has to have a gimmick that overkills a match type.
So I do in fact think the old PPV set up was way better. The names were more original and better too IMO.

Gimmick Pay-Per-Views ruined gimmick matches, which in turn, diminishes the quality of every well done feud that WWE has. Gimmick matches mean nothing anymore. It used to be that they were used as a blow off match. Gimmick matches had a purpose, you didn't just throw two guys into Hell in a Cell unless there was a real reason for it. Now they create matches to fit a gimmick. That should NEVER be the case. The gimmick should fit the storyline, plain and simple. Don't just quote someone else without adding anything, it's annoying, and against the rules.

Personally I would love to have maybe 6 a year. Reason why is you are supposed to build for one and to me 3-4 weeks don't build enough and then if the run the same match from Raw or Smackdown on PPV is not very good. I would say these for PPV,
January Royal Rumble - Classic 30 man 1 hour match
March/April Wrestlemania - Biggest PPV of the year
June King of the Ring - Needs to come back in PPV form shows meaning to it
August Summerslam - PPV of the Summer
November Survivor Series - Classic 4 on 4 or 5 on 5 or the 10 on 10 tag teams!
Now I would add a In Your House every once in a while. Not every month in between all of the major PPV's.

Most PPV's in the last 6 years have been absolute abortions (except a few). It doesn't matter what the format was, the matches would still suck.

You know what kills ppvs? The same in matches month in and month out that I can see on raw. That is why WM is so appealing to me, you have rock and cena who barely touched each other, let alone wrestle and punk/Jericho is fresh

To me the PPV format would be fine if they actually took the time to develop interesting characters and story lines.
