Superman push
+ Catering to the crowd
+ Saluting just because he played a Marine in a movie
+ Stale/mediocre ring work
= Hate.

I never watched Smackdown! after 2004 or so, but I remember disliking Cena during his feud with Angle. I remember how they tried to put heat on Angle (who was being cheered over Cena) by having him disrespect the military.
I have just never been a Cena fan. It's crazy how many people think this hate on Cena is "new."

I never was to keen on Cena from the beginning. Plus when people start to get boring a heel turn usually freshens them up. (Booker T, Batista, CM Punk are a few recent ones that came to mind) Certified Cena Hater since 2004. I hated him before anyone else ;D looks like I beat you to it, by like 2 years

He's had a ton of very entertaining matches, he's a great sports-entertainer.
But his sucking up to fans and always winning in the end got old - just like it did with Hogan late in his WWF run and pretty early in his WCW run - that's why the fans turned on him, too.
I was hoping Cena would go heel when he joined the Nexus, but his character just ruined that entire storyline and I've been bored to death with him ever since. They had a chance to do something fresh and they stuck with the stale same old same old.

Lots of people just got bored... simply put.
I am not one of these "Cena Haters", I actually like the guy... but he is not exactly the most interesting character.

Superman push + Catering to the crowd + Saluting just because he played a Marine in a movie + Stale/mediocre ring work = Hate. bingo.plus his "cheek squeeze of doom" is THE most pathetic finisher EVER. the first time the hate really registered with me was during his feud with Angle.......then it escalated heavily to the really anti Cena crowd at WM vs HHH.

I seem to remember one occasion where it was John Cena and (Randy Orton?) in a handicap match with like 8 or more opponents.

You do the same thing long enough and people are bound to get bored with it. That's just pro wrestling in general imo.

Seemed like everyone was in love with him till he was drafted to RAW. And after feuds with Y2J, Christian, & Angle the crowd just turned. Especially midway through his feud with Angle. And to be honest... not really sure why. I think it started because he was always coming out on top. With victories over guys like HBK, Triple H, Angle, & Y2J. All men who had earned respect from the fans. So the fans turned. But then again, I could be way off. Bingo. Ending JBL's title reign at WM 21 was the start for me though, the match was terrible and not what a "new era" reign should start out like, then changing the WWE title into a spinning hub-cap did me no favors in liking him anymore than I did a few days earlier at WM 21. Once he got drafted and what you mentioned happened, forget it. I was begging every week for a new champion up until Edge beat him. I actually started liking the guy during his feud with Batista for WM XXVI, started feeling sorry for him because I realized he was one of the best workers in the industry today, but I was blinded to it because of my previous hate of him. It really became unjustified to "hate" Cena by 2008 really, but alot of us held on to 2005-07 for so long that we didn't really see it.

It's a combination of things.
Simply put he isn't, never has and never will be as good as WWE very very very very very very very strongly suggest he is.
He isn't a mercurial ring talent like Lesnar was, he couldn't adapt and improve at his rate. I know Lesnar is deemed pretty unrelated to Cena's success/failings but I do believe a lot of fans were put off by WWE settling on the double act of Cena and Batista to fill the void Lesnar left in their plans for WWE's future. They were never that great of talents that they warranted the positions, positions that meant that they would beat everybody else on roster because they are now "the best" in the ring. Fans never bought it because imaginatively wrestling fans liked good wrestling even just thrown into gimmick matches, something they couldn't offer at all - their matches became routine to stop them looking stupid. Add to that Cena's title warm up was Carlito and getting stabbed by Jesus. It wasn't smart booking, he should have been feuding with a Kurt Angle then to make his ascension look credible.
What followed just seemingly served to poke the fans into reacting in a very negative way to Cena and they just carried on with it. He basically killed Jericho's aura of threat to me forever, he took him out completely in 2005. Cena came back from injury at SVS 08 and annihilated him after Jericho had spent 6 months vanquishing a guy who some would say is the best ever. That destroyed him.
I seem to remember a Raw where all they did was talk Cena up in 2008 or 2009 could have been 2010 even where it ran something like this - Cena doing this plus the WORLD EXCLUSIVE(not that the rest of it gives a crap) Cena Movie Trailer - might of been a countdown clock to it too, last week what Cena did, Cena 20 minute promo, IC title match with commentators talking about Cena all match long, Cena movie trailer, Diva match with commentators talking about Cena, Cena DVD promo, Cena backstage, Coming up Cena in a match, last week with Cena again, the Cena match, CENACENACENACENACENACENACENACENA. And that was in 2009ish, 4 years after the push up.
You'd want him dead if you weren't of a perverse nature. By then most fans had given up that his tyranny would ever end. And it's not over yet, seemingly not by a long shot given he's finally getting that "torch" he really really needs passed onto him....
.....It's an easy choice to hate him. Respect (and when I say that, I mean if he means a lot to the kids it is nice to see them enjoying that but they'd like anything really) and hate him.

His overall character got repetetive, and if you're not insulting someone, coming up with "cool" catchphrases, wearing silly attire or hitting a bunch of big spots in every match
wrestling fans who never left the Attitude era get sick of it.
Now I'm a fan of Cena. His story is really amazing to be honest. A guy basically coming out of nowhere to be one of the biggest draws ever. Awesome. I just wish that he would change up his little moveset every once and awhile. He's had like 300 matches in the last couple of years and every match ends up having the little "shoulderblock, shoulderblock, missed punch, spinning backdrop, 5KS" thing...then a missed AA/FU. It's REALLY annoying, because I know he is better than that.
If he switched his in ring moveset a little bit...just a little. To be less predictable, I think that would help turn some fans back around.

Fans today do not like prestige, they have A.D.D and seeing the best performer in the company retain his title by beating all challengers is too much for them to handle.

The last time i was a fan of John Cena was in 2003 when he took on Brock at Backlash for the WWE title, After that for some reason i just started to not like Cena and boo him. And that was before he was a run away freight train just own the WWE title.
