So Iv'e had my license for almost a year now but I still don't feel 100% confident behind the wheel. I'm fine when it comes to driving myself on familiar roads and to familiar places but when it comes to the idea of going some place new or driving other people I freak. I always worry about people judging my driving or getting into an accident. I know I need to practice a lot more to build up my confidence but I was wondering if any of you guys have had similar issues with driving or if you had any tips on overcoming driving-related anxiety? I know it sounds ridiculous but I really find it hard to psych myself up to fix this problem lol

The only thing that will make you better is trying. I would recommend driving on back roads you dont know then one day you can try a new highway and go through drive thrus and parking lots to get that extra experience

You're just gonna have to keep driving. Eventually you'll be fine with it.

I got my license at 19. I took lessons in Connecticut, but took the Florida road test while on vacation, visiting my dad. The test was so easy, I passed it, but only after a second time. My first time, I was so nervous. The instructor tried calming me down, but I ended up zooming thru oncoming traffic.
But anyway, before I could switch the license to CT, I ended up moving down to FL permanently. In preparation for living a life down here, my dad was the only one with discipline enough to get me to the level of driving to which I could be self-sufficient. It's been 8 years. I've had a few accidents, only car damage. One was a hydroplaning rear-ender at a red light, the side view mirror snapped off from the pole next to my parking space, and I got t-boned when I misjudged the timing a left turn.
If a place is close enough, I walk. It's really knowing your way around. As I knew my neighborhood/area better, I could go more places confidently (Grocery store, doctor, dentist, GFs house, etc;). Just study your city/town, peruse Google Maps. I still get anxious, but it's less and less now.

It's a hell of a cliche`, but practice really does make perfect. I went from being petrified behind the wheel after more than handful of lessons, but it was just nerves, as my instructor was really nice and patient.
The more I did it, the better I did. Luckily for me, I haven't had to drive many people around other than my family, so I'm never too anxious behind the wheel.

I would probably feel the same, I'm dreading the day when I'm going to drive. Just not something I want to do, but will probably have to.
