After buying a CSDA Shawn Michaels, it looks so good I have no use for my DA 3 Shawn and Im thinking of trying my hand at making a custom fig with it and have a few questions.
Im thinking of making a Muta for starters, as the Michaels fig has pant legs and overall shouldnt be too hard, even for me. Im thinking of buying some heads from bigeviljohn n trying my hand at painting
First thing of course is poppin the top, whats the best way of takin the head off? and then popping the new head on, Im sure bigeviljohn's heads go on pretty simple
Painting it shouldnt be much of a problem, nothing fancy planned for the pants. What paints and brushes would you recommend, I know theres different brands but Im sure someone out there has tried a few different types. I would like to make the figure still playable to a degree so what kind of sealer would work, especially around the joints so I can move it around and not have the paint wear?
Lastly, whats the best way of removing Shawns tatoo?

Lastly, whats the best way of removing Shawns tatoo? To remove heads/limbs: You have 2 methods. Heat/pop or boil/pop. Both will give you the desired results. Heat/pop: Using a hairdryer, heat around the whole head (front, both sides, back and top). After about 45 seconds, the head should be pliable. Push up on the chin, and the head should pop off. Boil/pop: Heat a cup of water in the microwave (2 minutes should be more than enough time). Dunk the head in the water, and hold it there for several seconds. Push up on the chin. As far as Bigeviljohn's heads, you will most likely have to mod it to get it on the peg; but that's a question you will have to ask him. Paint brushes: Cheap brushes can ruin your painting; either by leaving brush strokes, or the brush hairs coming off. Most customizers will tell you to use camel hair; they can be expensive but are worth it. These Tamiya brushes are the ones I use; they come in a 3 pack with each brush being a different size. Size meaning, the higher the number, the bigger the brush. 00 is smaller than 3. Therefore, you will need several brush sizes. Paint. Use acrylic paint! You can get some really cheap acrylic paint from your local craft store (Michaels, AC Moore, etc). They're usually $1/bottle. If you have a place similar to Hobbytown USA, then you can get other acrylic paint like Testors, Tamiya, Citadel. When using the paint, water it down. 6 thin coats of paint on the figure will look miles better than 1 thick coat of paint. As far as sealer goes, it really depends. I don't seal my figures. Testors has a brush on sealer, and a spray sealer. Most craft stores have spray sealers. Usually with a matte finish and gloss finish. Tattoos can be removed several ways: 1. Acetone. Not recommended because it can eat through the plastic. 2. Goof-off. Use a cotton ball or q-tip and use a small amount of goof-off. Rub it on the tattoo until it is removed. 3. Paint over it. |

I almost forgot, what would you recommend regarding skin tone so when I buy some heads they more or less match the body Basically in customizing, you can get lucky and have a head match the skin tone of the body. Companies like Mattel appear to make it easier. However, there are exceptions and painting will need to happen. Whenever I customize a figure, 9/10 times I will do a repaint. |

All you really have to do to adhere my heads to the ball jont for the neck is either glue them on or as I do put some kind of putty/epoxy or sculpting clay in the hollowed out head then glue it onto the ball peice. It will still retain FULL poseability that way.

I meant what colors would work for skintone since Ill be painting the heads from scratch |

LOL. Ooops.
Most of my customs use the same color, right out of the bottle.
Tamiya Flat Flesh. Tamiya also has other colors, for other skin tones.
Citadel has a wider variety of skin colors, from my experience.
As for custom skin tones, that's just going to have to be a science experiment for you.
