I remember back in the Jakks days you couldnt keep big names like cena, rey, kane, or undertaker on the shelves. Guys that where below that where shelf warmers(same thing with divas too).
Now its a complete change around.
I have been gone from collecting wrestling figures for almost 5 years now and just got back in. So if somebody could catch me up i would greatly appreciate it.

I would guess it is because the non popular superstars are short packed and that the popular superstars are in almost every series so people already have them. People want the first time in the line nonpopular guys for their collections so I think that is why the roles are reversed now.

WWE superstars come and go, so i should have enough in a year to do a royal rumble(aka throw all the figs in the ring, have my one year old take them out and see which one is left.) lol.

For the most part (like 99% of the time in the current superstars lines), Jakks didn't short pack anyone. Everyone was evenly distributed. Mattel short packs who they perceive will not sell well at retail.

because mattel loads every set & every case with the 3 guys they deem will sell well (Cena, Orton, Mysterio) with a couple of guys they've used enough of to satisfy for years (Triple H, Undertaker) and everyone else is basically there because they cant just release a set of 3 figures at a time.
I swear mattel would be fine releasing a best of John Cena, best of Rey Mysterio & best of Randy Orton 6 figure set.

Mattel rarely releases mid carders and when they do its usually 1 per case

Why am I the only one who remembers Jakks Cena & Mysterio sitting for months at a time? That molded tucked in skin tight shirt mold on Cena was always a kiss of death around here.

I remember in my Jakks glory years (05-07) that Rey was extremely tough to find, and I'd swipe up any one (as long as the attire was cool) because I felt lucky finding it.
Good heavens how the times have changed.

Yeah mattel has some serious issues with getting out the figures that are in demand. Its not just the collectors that don't wwant any more Cenas Ortons Reys or Takers. Its the kids too. They have released enough different variations of those 4 guys that they don't need to make any more for the next 3 years. There can't be one collector or little kid out there that dosent have a Cena or Mysterio figure so why do we keep getting them? I never had a problem finding a figure that I wanted while Jakks was in charge, but now I have nothing but problems finding any figure that I'm looking for. Its seriousply become a shock these days to walk into a store and find anything that's not the same old Cena Orton and Rey figure.

It's like this: Imagine there are 12 Cenas in a box along with 4 flashback Terry Funks. John Cena sells 8, and Terry Funk sells 3. So that leaves 4 John Cenas on the shelf and 1 Terry Funk. Now you walk into the toy store and see 4 John Cenas and 1 Terry Funk. And then you tell yourself, "Wow, Terry Funk must be really really popular." But in fact, John Cena sold twice as many as Terry Funk because of Mattel's distribution.
I've been a reader of this forum for a lot longer then I've been a member, and it seems like this keeps coming up over and over again. It's as if people just can't help but believe what their eyes tell them. They think if they see lots of John Cenas then he isn't selling well. Or if they see no "something else" then "something else" IS selling very well.
Mattel still saturates us with too many Cenas and Reys, but I think they're just experimenting. Hopefully they figure it out before their contract is up.

Good heavens how the times have changed. I remember. Worked at Toys R Us for the 05 or 06 Christmas and would help customers find Cena and Rey for their kids. Eddie was hard to find after his death. I remember the shelfs clogged with mid cards and most Classics. Luckily i just got into Mattel, so it will take me a while to get stuff, and now i know whose warming the shelfs, so i can pick them up last or on clearance. LOL Orton, Cena, Rey, Taker= Storm Shadow, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander, Duke of Wrestling

I remember back in the Jakks days you couldnt keep big names like cena, rey, kane, or undertaker on the shelves. Guys that where below that where shelf warmers(same thing with divas too). Now its a complete change around. Basically, because they know a Shelton Benjamin or Deuce figure would sit there forever whereas a wrestler people know will sell eventually. It's better to have four John Cena figures on a shelf than four Jinder Mahal figures. It's senseless to pack jobbers and lower-carders as heavy as the main names, there's never any need for 3 Curt Hawkins' per box as some of the sillyboys on here want. Mattel has overdone it in the opposite direction though. Cena's packed 3 per case in pretty much every single series, and it's just too much. With the volume of figures they release (one series a month of the normal figures, and a series of two-packs and an elite series every two months) and the lack of big names on the roster these days, there probably isn't a perfect balance to strike.

I perfectly understand short-packing a figure. I've never had that much of a problem finding the guys I've wanted, except for the past 4-5 months. And I'm still eventually finding them. I don't understand the overpacking, however. My local TRU which I work right across the street from and check all the time opened 5 cases of B15 total, with 4 Cena's per case. They maybe sold 8 altogether based on the number that are still there. That combined with the BOPPV Basic Cena and the Signature series Cena, and a couple of stray basic Reys means our shelves are clogged. Overpacking hurts everyone, underpacking hurts nobody if you're trying hard enough.
It is true that if you had overpacked the E14 Flashbacks, for instance, that they would be warming worse than they already are. Wal-Marts everywhere are getting them in finally, several cases at a time, and now I've gone from having never seen them to owning them and having seen them about 2 dozen times now. Don't believe they're warming? Check the prices on Ebay, people are essentially selling them at a loss.
Something else, real quick, to add to the subject. Mattel does in-ring gear only for the basic line. I remember that in a Q&A session last year when asked if they would do molded t-shirts. I don't know how much this would factor into other people's purchases, but I could see myself being more interested in having multiple Cena's with the same color gear if one had a t-shirt, and one didn't. Especially since, based off the Tommy Dreamer with the molded t-shirt, Mattel can sculpt a better looking shirt. Or maybe a rubber shirt since the price of basics is going up continuously.
