THE BRIT REPORT Written by Matt Burke on Monday 29th December 1997
-- You can see my review of WCW Starrcade 97' here.
-- We are slowly approaching a new year in professional wrestling, and would you look at all of the occurrences that went on throughout the year 1997 in the world of mainstream professional wrestling.
World Championship Wrestling continued to dominate in the Monday Night Wars, their flagship show Monday Nitro continuing to wipe the floor with the World Wrestling Federation's Monday Night RAW, particularly on August 4, where Nitro drew a 4.36 rating in comparison to RAW's 2.6. Eric Bischoff got more and more confident as the year went by, managing to take Bret Hart from the WWF, one of their biggest names of 1997. But additionally, Nitro continued to show an action-packed amount of wrestling and entertainment as it showcased its cruiserweights heavily, as well as drama within the nWo and its ongoing invasion of WCW. Hollywood Hogan's rivalries with Roddy Piper and Lex Luger continued to steal the wars, but it was the build to the return of Sting that took everything into WCW's favor. Sting and Hogan's rivalry started in 1996 after Sting left, and it concluded as the year 1997 ended (supposedly), last night at Starrcade. Sting wrestled his first match in fifteen months to win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, alongside the pay-per-view return of Bret Hart. Going into 1998, WCW is in a financially safe place as opposed to its competition, boasting a ton of outstanding talents from around the world. But also, it has been rumoured that Nitro will permanently be changing to three hours in length on a weekly basis, as well as the debut of Thursday Thunder in the second week of January. It's an interesting time to be a wrestling fan, because going into 1998 it seems as though WCW is going to do what no promotion or territory could do before, and take down Vince McMahon's World Wrestling Federation.
-- It has been revealed officially that Davey Boy Smith, also known as the British Bulldog in the World Wrestling Federation, signed the papers over Christmas and will be coming to WCW very shortly. Davey paid $150,000 to the WWF to get out of his deal following the Montreal Screwjob, seeking to be reunited with his brother-in-law, Bret Hart. It is also believed that Jim Neidhart will follow, having been let go several weeks ago after being nationally humiliated on the WWF's flagship show, RAW is WAR.
-- The Brit Report column for WCW will be moving to Fridays next week! Keep your eyes open, this will be the last column of 1997. So to our readers, happy holidays and we will see you in the year 1998!
-- WCW held Starrcade on 12/28/98. The results were as follows: - Sting def. Hollywood Hogan to win the WCW World Heavyweight title - Larry Zbyszko def. Eric Bischoff to retain power of Nitro - Diamond Dallas Page def. Curt Hennig to win the WCW US Heavyweight title - Buff Bagwell def. Lex Luger - Saturn def. Chris Benoit in a No-Disqualification match - Bill Goldberg def. Steve McMichael - Randy Savage, Scott Norton & Konnan def. Ray Traylor & The Steiner Brothers - Eddie Guerrero def. Dean Malenko to retain the WCW World Cruiserweight title

| WCW MONDAY NITRO #121: Monday 29th December 1997 - The Arena in Baltimore, MD - 12,196 |
9PM - FIRST HOUR - 4.7 - The opening video package for WCW Monday Nitro hit, which was followed by Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko introducing us to the show, talking down Starrcade last night. Zbyszko talked about saving Nitro for everyone, beating Eric Bischoff last night, but the main story was Sting winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from Hollywood Hogan, although in controversial means.
- Eric Bischoff kicked off the show and talked about the controversial factor in how Hollywood Hogan was screwed out of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship last night at Starrcade. He ordered that Sting offer him a rematch, without Bret Hart around to restart the match when not going in WCW's favor! He then introduced an upset Hollywood Hogan who didn't seem himself. Hogan talked about how he put up the fight of his life against Sting, and he finally beat him fair and square, but for what! For Bret Hart to come out with sour grapes and restart the match, costing him the title. He orders a rematch, and he expects it to be made for tonight on Nitro!
- The Nitro Girls start dancing in the ring to please the fans following a commercial break.
- Bill Goldberg def. Roadblock (01:12) A short match, Goldberg powered through Roadblock with a Spear and the Jackhammer in impressive fashion.
- An advertisement for WCW Saturday Night aired, promoting Scott Hall appearing this Saturday on the TBS Superstation from 6:05.
- Gene Okerlund introduced Bret "Hitman" Hart, the newest member of WCW. Bret came out to a great reaction, Okerlund asking Hart about his intentions last night at Starrcade. Bret talked about how he didn't want something that happened last month in Montreal to also happen here in WCW, an injustice per se. He's sick of seeing the nWo scum that are a lot like the guys he left behind last month! He wanted to see Sting win the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, and in WCW, he wants to compete with the best this company has to offer, and hopefully some day soon, he'll be in contention to the WCW World Heavyweight Championship himself!
- Raven made his way out to the ring accompanied by the Flock, talking about how sick he is of hearing about Chris Benoit being a world renowned talent, just because he suffered in the Calgary Dungeon with Stu Hart. He suffered alone, he had a tough upbringing, so he definitely knows the psychological pressure Benoit has on him, to wake up every morning and better himself, but Raven's hurting a lot more, and that's why last night he had Saturn beat the hell out of the "Canadian Crippler", because he knows he's not enough to take him on. Raven then informed us that Kidman would be taking on Benoit tonight.
- Chris Benoit def. Kidman (w/The Flock) by DQ (02:54) Benoit got the better hand of Kidman tonight, the Flock member managing to impress with a few high-flying attacks directed at the "Crippler", but Benoit caught him in the Crippler Crossface and had Kidman about to tap when the Flock jumped him!
Raven led the orchestrated attack as Saturn, Lodi, Hammer and Kidman starte to pound away at the defenseless Chris Benoit, but that was short-lived as suddenly out ran Diamond Dallas Page, and the new WCW United States Heavyweight Champion began to clear house of the Flock, attending to the "Crippler"!
- Rey Mysterio Jr def. Eddie Guerrero to win the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship (07:23) Quite a high-impact rivalry spilled out to here tonight, as Eddie Guerrero won the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship from Mysterio just last month on Nitro. Competitive match, Eddie weakened from last night's match with Dean Malenko. He worked Rey's leg but Mysterio knocked off a victory with a springboard hurricanrana for the win!
Eddie Guerrero grew furious as Rey Mysterio Jr rolled out of the ring, the official handing Mysterio Jr his newly won WCW World Cruiserweight Championship.
- The Steiner Brothers def. Wrath & Mortis (w/James Vandenberg) in a non-title match (04:20) A relatively quick match as Scott and Rick showed that they were the true WCW World Tag Team Champions, and not the Outsiders, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Scott took over most of the action, with Rick getting in occasional support, as Mortis fell for the Steinerizer for the win.
- Gene Okerlund introduces the President of WCW, James J. Dillon, as JJ Dillon talked about how he wanted to thank Larry Zbyszko for keeping WCW Nitro the same, fending off the nWo's invasion of the flagship show. He also talked about how Sting was the WCW World Heavyweight Champion and a new dawn has begun in World Championship Wrestling, because there isn't many nWo guys in the back tonight. But after Eric Bischoff and Hollywood Hogan's requests earlier tonight, he wants to play it generously, and offer Hogan his rematch tonight - with NO interference from anyone, whether it be WCW or nWo! Dillon hopes we have a good night.
| 10PM - SECOND HOUR - 4.6 - The second hour fireworks went off, Larry Zbyszko being replaced by Bobby Heenan.
- Buff Bagwell (w/Vincent) def. Disco Inferno to win the WCW World Television Championship (03:45) Buff Bagwell on a roll managed to control Disco Inferno for most of the match, Buff cocky as ever whilst Vincent attacked Inferno whenever the referee's back was turned. Inferno attempted a comeback but Vincent's distraction led to the Buff Blockbuster for the win.
Buff Bagwell and Vincent stomped Disco Inferno out of the ring as Buff taunted with the WCW World Television Championship, another title belt in the nWo's camp!
A video package aired, promoting the WCW Nitro Party competition that is going to start tonight.
- Curt Hennig def. Chris Jericho (02:26) Curt Hennig was angry about his loss last night to Diamond Dallas Page, but meanwhile Chris Jericho was battling to break his losing streak, Hennig meanwhile shouting that he wanted DDP in a rematch, before quickly putting Jericho away with the HennigPlex.
Curt Hennig celebrated his win and left, whilst Chris Jericho was left in the ring, arguing with the referee and making a fool of himself, Jericho then taking a microphone and yelling about how he's sorry that he lost again here tonight, gathering more boos with his repeated apologies.
- The theme of the New World Order hit and out came Scott Hall and Kevin Nash, carrying the imposter WCW World Tag Team Championships. They entered the ring and talked about the survey, as the nWo continues to win this survey. The two then discussed the position between nWo and WCW, and how they have the Tag belts, rather than these jokers, Rick and Scott. They continue to mention Bret Hart being here, and how he made a bad choice when he decided not to join the nWo. They wished Hollywood Hogan luck for tonight before leaving.
- A Nitro Party tape aired.
- Booker T def. Scott Norton (05:34) Unexpected to see Booker T enter the fight between the nWo and WCW, but he took it to Scott Norton tonight, managing to nearly put him away with a missile dropkick for no prevail. Norton then tried the shoulderbreaker just for Booker to get out and lay Norton out with an axe kick, then nailing Norton with the Harlem Hangover for three!
- A video package aired, hyping up WCW/nWo Souled Out on January 24, 1998, sponsored by Snickers.
- The Giant def. Yuji Nagata (w/Sonny Oono) (00:26) Extremely short match here, as the Giant was still after Kevin Nash following Nash no-showing Starrcade last night. Giant simply caught Nagata with a Chokeslam for a very straight-forward win.
The Giant celebrated his win, yelling into the camera that he wanted Nash.
- A replay of the climax of Starrcade from last night aired, between Sting and Hollywood Hogan. And up next, we will see the rematch of the match of the century, no interference allowed for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship!
- Sting vs Hollywood Hogan; time limit draw for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship (08:23) These two tore the roof of the MCI Center off last night, the fans exploded again tonight, both men exchanging blows in a slugfest for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, Hogan wanting the title back, but now he had to do it all on his own. Sting managed to nail the Stinger Splash early on, then continuing the attack. The match was forced to a close as the show was about to go off the air, Hogan pulling the referee into the corner for a Stinger Splash!
| 11PM - END SHOW - 4.65 |

| WCW MONDAY NITRO #122: Monday 5th January 1998 - The Georgia Dome in Atlanta, GA - 26,773 |
9PM - FIRST HOUR - 4.69 - The opening video package for WCW Monday Nitro hit, which was followed by Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko introducing us to the show, talking about a new year for World Championship Wrestling here in 1998. They went on to discuss last Monday night, showing the closing moments of the last episode of Nitro, where Sting and Hollywood Hogan were battling it out when Nitro prematurely went off the air. Schiavone talked about how cameras were still rolling, and the match ended in a riot between the WCW locker room and the nWo members! We were told that we would be joined by JJ Dillon later on in the show to discuss this situation.
- The Nitro Girls were shown on the rampway dancing to get the fans in the Georgia Dome amped up.
The theme of Chris Jericho hit to kick us off, Jericho making his way down to the ring as he walked to the ring with a steel chair. Jericho took the microphone from David Penzer and told the Atlanta crowd that he was sorry for his frustration as of late, and that the real Chris Jericho is the man talking right now. He apologized to Penzer for destroying his steel chair last Monday night on Nitro before handing him a shiny new chair, Jericho stating that he would get the win right here and now! Jericho gathered a mixed reaction throughout.
- Psychosis def. Chris Jericho (06:43) A back-and-forth encounter to kick off Nitro, great cruiserweight action between the two as Psychosis showed a more unorthodox style of lucha-libre to Jericho's American high-flying. Jericho outsmarted Psychosis as he attempted the Guillotine Legdrop, and Jericho went after the back of Psychosis. However when Jericho went to apply the Liontamer on the Mexican, Psychosis managed to turn it into a hurricanrana, rolling Jericho up for three!
Psychosis celebrated his win to cheers as Chris Jericho remained in the ring, getting angrier and angrier before leaving the ring, shoving David Penzer off of his chair and slamming the chair repeatedly into the steel steps and the ring post!
- We went to Gene Okerlund as he was standing at the rampway, introducing us to the WCW President, JJ Dillon. Dillon came out and discussed the controversy surrounding last week's Nitro. Dillon noted how all hell broke loose between the WCW/nWo members, and how they all violated WCW policy. This will result in fine, suspension or both depending on their own involvement. Additionally, there is still debate in the company about whether Sting deserves the WCW World Heavyweight Championship following Starrcade 97's controversial ending. He said how he was planning on keeping the title on Sting and fighting to keep it away from the nWo!
- The Giant def. Konnan (w/Vincent) (03:54) The Giant continued to seem quite ticked off, following the impromptu cancellation of his match with Kevin Nash at Starrcade. He took on Nash's ally in the nWo, Konnan here, and Giant simply tossed Konnan around, although he did get in some momentum. He also distracted the referee whilst Vincent tried to attack him, but it was short-lived as Giant gave Konnan and Vincent two Chokeslams for the win.
The Giant celebrated his win to cheers as he grabbed a microphone, stating that he knew Kevin Nash was in attendance tonight, which is why he wanted him in this ring face-to-face to organize a match, ASAP!
- An advertisement aired, promoting WCW Saturday Night this weekend on the TBS Superstation from 6:05pm. Set to main event this week is Scott Norton of the nWo in action against Lex Luger.
- The theme of the nWo hit as out came the faction themselves, minus Konnan and Vincent following the Chokeslam from the Giant earlier on. Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff took microphones as Bischoff mentioned the travesty that the nWo have been included in over the past eight nights. He talks about how he believes that WCW have started to counteract in the war, and it's about damn time too! Hogan talked about how he had the WCW World Heavyweight Championship in the palms of his hands once again last week before WCW stars jumped him. Bischoff talked about how bored he is of Sting thinking he can outsmart them all. But this is where it gets interesting as Randy Savage took a mic, talking about Hogan's ego, and how he is always after the title. But what about "Macho Madness"? Savage tells Hogan that he's had his chance, and now he wants to go after Sting! Bischoff then reminded the two of the pending decision to revoke Sting's title reign and return to Hogan, meaning Savage won't be able to get the title, but Savage reacts by telling Bischoff that he'll do anything to get it, and when he says it he means it! Hogan and Savage continue to exchange words before the other members of the nWo told them to get it together, Scott Hall talking about how tonight is the night where things change, and that they are not the enemy! Savage reluctantly agrees, leaving by himself.
- The Nitro Girls host another segment to dancing, this time in the crowd with two talented children.
- We were taken back to Saturday Night this past weekend, where Steven Regal talked to Lee Marshall about how much he desired more competition, then challenging the impressive newcomer, Bill Goldberg to a match tonight.
- Bill Goldberg def. Steven Regal (03:21) Steven Regal attempted to keep it under control, managing to force Goldberg into matwrestling, outsmarting him at various points, but the fans got behind the rookie as the match went on, Goldberg impressing many with a powerslam, the Spear and the Jackhammer for the win.
Bill Goldberg celebrated his win as the announcers made note of how impressive he was, still undefeated in this great sport.
- We returned to Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko as they discussed the teardown the nWo nearly had earlier tonight, showing a replay of the exchange, just to be broken up and solved by Scott Hall and the other members of the nWo.
- Gene Okerlund was shown on the aisleway, as he introduced the most recent addition to World Championship Wrestling, Bret "Hitman" Hart! Bret made his way out to a loud reaction, as Hart met Okerlund and began to discuss his interview last week, as Bret noted the situation going on with Sting and Hollywood Hogan following Starrcade 97' just eight days ago. Hart spoke out about how their rivalry continues, and so be it. But in the long run, he knows that that everyone would love to see Bret face either Hogan or Sting, and once their rivalry concludes, it will be Bret Hart next in line for a shot at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship! Suddenly, the theme of the nWo hit and out came Scott Hall himself, Hall squaring up with Bret as Okerlund asked why Hall was here. Scott referred to last week when he said Bret would regret not joining the nWo and instead joining WCW, because when you're against the nWo, things happen. With that, Kevin Nash snuck up from behind, cracking Hart in the back of the head with a lead pipe! The Outsiders attacked Bret, dragging him down to the ring where Nash then had Bret set up for a Jackknife Powerbomb, but the British Bulldog rushed down the aisleway, clotheslines to Hall, tossing Nash over the top! Bulldog aided to Bret, as Hart had some reinforcements against the nWo members.
- A replay aired to follow what had just happened, discussed by Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko.
- Buff Bagwell & Scott Norton def. Lex Luger & Ray Traylor (8:35) Lex Luger laid out the challenge this past weekend on Saturday Night, for Buff Bagwell to invite one of his nWo pals to a tag team match tonight, and with Scott "Flash" Norton at his side, Norton proved to be dominant, isolating Traylor from Luger throughout, working away at the shoulder. Buff made the mistake of going for the Buff Blockbuster and missing though, and with that in came Luger. Luger cleared house but illegal man Norton came from behind with a Shoulderbreaker to Luger, and Buff covered for the win!
Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton slipped out of the ring as Ray Traylor got into the ring, angry at the cheap win made once again by the nWo! | 10:03 - SECOND HOUR - 4.3
- The second hour fireworks went off, Larry Zbyszko being replaced by Bobby Heenan.
- Chris Benoit made his way out to the ring for action, as we were taken to a replay from a challenge made by Benoit on Saturday Night, calling out Raven to a singles match tonight with no Flock members and no disqualifictions. But when Raven came out with the Flock, he told Benoit that in order to face him, he'd firstly have to take on Riggs!
- Chris Benoit def. Riggs (w/The Flock) (04:24) The "Canadian Crippler" had his work cut out for him tonight, having been motivated to take on Raven, instead getting one of the henchmen instead, taking on the Flock's Riggs. Riggs managed to get in several shots, but in no time he fell for the German suplexes of Benoit, and in no time, Benoit made Riggs tap to the Crippler Crossface.
Benoit celebrated his win to cheers as he wanted Raven to get into the ring and face him now, but Raven instead confidently told Benoit that he applauded him, going through the Flock like that. But there's one man other than himself that he needs to beat in order to face Raven, and that's Saturn! He told Benoit that he must beat him this Thursday on Thunder to face him, and if he fails, Benoit must join the Flock! The crowd booed as the Flock left with Riggs.
- Eddie Guerrero made his way out to the aisleway accompanied by an accomplish, looking quite familiar to the diehard WCW fans. Guerrero was met by Gene Okerlund, as Okerlund asked Guerrero why he came out here and what he wanted to say. Guerrero spoke about how he hates Rey Mysterio Jr, and how brash and cocky he is, to steal the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship from him like that last week. Guerrero then introduced the man that he hoped would take out Rey this Thursday on the first edition of Thunder, his nephew, Chavo Guerrero Jr! Chavo took the mic and told Eddie that he loved him and he wouldn't let him down, he would take Mysterio down and leave the leftovers for Eddie to take what is rightfully his! Gene then asked Eddie if he had heard the news made by JJ Dillon, Guerrero to take on Juventud Guerrera in a number one contenders match for the title, on January 24th at Souled Out! Eddie said he hadn't heard, extremely infuriated as the Guerreros stormed away.
- Ultimo Dragon def. Disco Inferno (04:29) It was announced on commentary during this match that this Thursday on Thunder, JJ Dillon will unveil the next number one contender to the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, perhaps to Hollywood Hogan's dismay. Ultimo was worn down by Disco, Inferno still focusing on dancing too much, and it cost him in the long run as Dragon eventually slapped in the Dragon Sleeper for the victory!
Ultimo Dragon celebrated his win to cheers, but it was short-lived as Chris Jericho ran out to the ring and started assaulting Dragon! Jericho applied the Liontamer to boos as Jericho screamed that he was sorry!
- A vignette aired, entitled 'WCW On The Road...', showcasing several dates for the next few weeks of World Championship Wrestling.
- Booker T def. Hugh Morrus (w/Jimmy Hart) in a number one contenders match (05:13) This match was to determine who faces Buff Bagwell for the WCW World Television Championship on Thursday on Thunder, and Hugh Morrus was very determined, Jimmy Hart in his corner to try and cheap out a victory for his man. Morrus and Booker exchanged offence, but Morrus gave Booker too much time crouched on the top rope, Booker with a missile dropkick! Booker soon followed up with the 110th Street Slam for the victory!
Booker T celebrated his win, and Booker was certainly on his way to challenging and potentially taking the WCW World Television Championship away from Buff Bagwell and the nWo!
- The Steiner Brothers (w/Ted Dibiase) def. High Voltage in a non-title match (03:45) The Steiner Brothers showed once again that they were superior to all other tag teams in World Championship Wrestling, fending off the rookie team from the PowerPlant, Robby Rage and Kenny Kaos. Scott took over all of the action, not even tagging in Rick and finishing off Kaos with the Steiner Screwdriver for the win.
The Steiner Brothers celebrated their win with Ted Dibiase, the WCW World Tag Team Champions once again victorious.
- An advertisement aired, promoting the premiere of WCW Thursday Thunder this Thursday on the Superstation, TBS. Scheduled to feature Randy Savage in action against Lex Luger, the revealing of the next number one contender to the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, plus more!
- Michael Buffer introduced the competitors for our main event.
- Diamond Dallas Page def. Curt Hennig to retain the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship (13:39) What a main event to the first Monday Nitro of 1998, Curt Hennig wanting to check in his rematch clause on the new WCW US Heavyweight Champion, DDP. A back-and-forth match, reminiscent of their Starrcade 97' encounter eight day ago. DDP's ribs were bandaged and worked over, Hennig soon capitalizing with the Hennig-Plex, but DDP reversed and went for a Diamond Cutter, Hennig shoving him into the referee! Buff Bagwell then hit the ring with Scott Norton and Konnan, DDP managing to take Konnan and Norton down, the Diamond Cutter for Bagwell! Hennig swung for DDP just to get a Diamond Cutter for good measures, securing the three!
Diamond Dallas Page celebrated his win to loud cheers, raising the WCW US Heavyweight Championship high, when suddenly Kevin Nash and Scott Hall arrived with Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff! They circled DDP as Page went after them all, but being outnumbered in the process, Nash with the Jackknife Powerbomb! Hogan followed up with the Legdrop, however that brought in the cavalry from Calgary; Bret Hart, The Giant and Jim Neidhart storming the ring running off the nWo! Hogan and Nash got into each others' faces, as Bischoff tried to separate them, Nitro going off the air!

| WCW THURSDAY THUNDER #001: Thursday 8th January 1998 - The Ocean Center in Daytona Beach, FL - 4,121 |

8PM - FIRST HOUR - 3.5

- We kick off the series premiere of Thursday Thunder with a limousine pulling up outside of the Ocean Center, and out stepped Hollywood Hogan, Rick Rude, Eric Bischoff and Konnan, meanwhile another limousine pulled up and out stepped Randy Savage, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall! It seemed like the nWo were having problems as we cut to the opening video package for WCW Thursday Thunder.
- Pyrotechnics went off, followed by the introduction of Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone and Lee Marshall. They welcomed us to the inaugural episode, discussing Monday Nitro last Monday as well as the revelation that the nWo seemed to be having problems.
- Curt Hennig def. Prince Iaukea (04:24) The first match of Thunder tonight showed Curt Hennig on the rebound of losing his spot in persuit of the WCW US Heavyweight Championship. Hennig was angry, but this allowed Iaukea to take advantage, several near-falls taking place. Hennig then got back on top and nailed the Hennig-Plex for the victory. Curt Hennig celebrated his win to boos, but not before delivering a second Hennig-Plex to poor Prince Iaukea! The 'WCW On The Road' segment aired, promoting several live events and television tapings coming up over the next few weeks. COMMERCIAL- The theme of the New World Order hit, and out came Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, holding hostage the nWo World Tag Team Championships. The two climbed into the ring and began to discuss the rotating questions, following a brief survey over who the better was; WCW or the nWo. Nash discussed having not had a falling out with Hollywood Hogan, and that it was in his own best interest to remain neutral. But Hall continued, stating that Randy Savage didn't have many friends in the nWo at the moment, and they wanted to ride with him to avoid Savage's paranoia. They continued, discussing Monday night on Nitro, where they attacked Bret Hart until Davey Boy Smith made the save, and this happened not once but twice. Nash and Hall then happily welcomed Hart and Smith to come to Nitro on Monday to meet them in a tag team match! This resumed as Nash addressed the situation with the Giant, telling Giant that he can continue to get involved with his business, but he will have to admit that Nash has the better Powerbomb in this organization! The nWo left, confidently. - A replay from Monday Nitro aired, as Eddie Guerrero introduced the world to his nephew, Chavo Guerrero Jr. Chavo and Eddie slandered Rey Mysterio, Chavo intending to put the WCW World Cruiserweight Champion in his place tonight. - Rey Mysterio Jr def. Chavo Guerrero Jr in a non-title match (06:48) An impressive match to showcase Chavo Guerrero Jr's strengths, but unfortunately it was hard to get by the WCW World Cruiserweight Champion. Mysterio proved to Chavo why it was so hard for his uncle Eddie to beat him, almost stealing the win on numerous occasions. Chavo soon caught Mysterio off-guard and worked over his spine, stretching him and trying to slow him down, but Chavo soon walked right into a top rope hurricanrana, hooking the legs for the three! Rey Mysterio Jr celebrated his win to the applause of everything, Chavo Guerrero Jr meanwhile rolling out of the ring, as he seemed a little frightened, perhaps of uncle Eddie for letting him down tonight! COMMERCIAL We returned to Thursday Thunder on TBS, as Gene Okerlund was standing by on the rampway, introducing the WCW United States Heavyweight Champion, Diamond Dallas Page. Out came DDP, as he approached Gene, and Okerlund congratulated him for the win against Curt Hennig last Monday night. He followed up by asking DDP about the attack from the nWo following the match, to which DDP mentioned how retribution and payback were in the cards for Hollywood Hogan and the nWo, dissension in the ranks or not! He thanked Bret Hart and the British Bulldog and the Giant for rescuing him, but this deal with the nWo was far from over. This was quickly met by the theme of Konnan, as the Latino nWo member came out to confront Dallas Page. Konnan asked Page if he thought he was the hottest around, because he begged to differ as a former WCW US Heayweight Champion himself! Konnan told DDP that he knew he was a man that faced allcomers, which is why he was calling him out for Monday night on Nitro, and he's not about to take excuses! Page welcomed it, telling Konnan that he would feel the BANG! DDP left as Konnan wanted more. - Rick Martel def. Chris Adams (03:25) This was a surprise, the debut of Thursday Thunder and the debut of Rick Martel. Martel showed off his fancy skills against a ready Chris Adams, both exchanging mat-based wrestling skills, Adams trying to take down Martel, but Rick soon after synced in the Quebec Crab and Adams tapped! Rick Martel celebrated his win to cheers, the veteran having landed here in World Championship Wrestling, and Daytona seemed pleased to see him. - We returned to the announcers, as Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Lee Marshall further discussed tonight, still scheduled to see Randy Savage take on Lex Luger, the Giant in action, an appearance from Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff, Chris Benoit vs Saturn, and a lot more. We were promised Buff Bagwell defending the WCW World Television Championship against Booker T when we came back. COMMERCIAL - Buff Bagwell vs Booker T; time-limit draw for the WCW World Television Championship (10:00) Buff Bagwell attempted to come out to the ring accompanied by Scott Norton, but the Steiner Brothers showed up to ensure Norton was not at ringside for the exchange. A very back-and-forth match here, as Bagwell attempted to slip away with the win various times, Booker managing to keep fighting back. Booker nailed a missile dropkick for Bagwell to kick out of, and when the Harlem Hangover was attempted, Bagwell moved. The match continued as Bagwell nailed the Buff Blockbuster just for Booker to get his foot on the ropes, and that's when Booker suddenly laid Buff out with an axe kick! Booker covered, but the time limit expired! The crowd booed as Buff Bagwell remained down and out, Booker T asking the referee, profusely asking for more time as it looked like we could have had a new WCW World Television Champion had it not been for the time limit! Bagwell was soon helped out of the ring by Scott "Flash" Norton, Bagwell slyly getting away.

9PM - SECOND HOUR - 3.6

- The second-hour pyrotechnics went off, as Tony Schiavone, Lee Marshall and Mike Tenay welcomed us to the second hour of Thursday Thunder's series premiere!
COMMERCIAL - Chris Benoit def. Saturn by count-out (w/The Flock) (08:33) Another competitive match tonight on Thursday Thunder, as Raven ordered this match take place on Nitro for Benoit to take on the leader of the Flock at Souled Out in several weeks. If Benoit lost, he'd have to join the Flock. Benoit took Saturn down early on in the match, trying to get this over and done with but Saturn was too good a mat-wrestler, taking the "Canadian Crippler" to the limit, working over the shoulder as Benoit took down Saturn's shoulder. Both traded submissions as Benoit tried the Crossface, but Saturn slipped out. Benoit soon made a comeback, delivering several German suplexes, Saturn disorientated, flopping to the outside and purposely getting himself counted out! The crowd booed as Saturn remained down, the Flock helping him up as Chris Benoit looked very annoyed. Raven took a microphone looking on from ringside, as the leader of the Flock told Benoit that that was good, but not good enough! Raven told Benoit that he wanted this match to happen again this Monday on Nitro, with the same rules applying! However this time, it will be Raven's Rules! Raven wished Benoit sarcastic luck. COMMERCIAL - "Voodoo Child" played as this brought out the theme of Hollywood Hogan, accompanied by Rick Rude and Eric Bischoff. The three nWo members wandered out to see Gene Okerlund as Okerlund asked Hollywood Hogan the question that was on everybody's mind; what was going on within the New World Order. Rick Rude told Hogan that he'd handle it, that sometimes a fellow ally has a hot fuse that is perhaps a little difficult to work with, which is why they chose different limousines, to keep their distance. And when an apology is made, the nWo will be back as one cohesive unit! The crowd booed as Eric Bischoff told Okerlund that the nWo were still as strong as ever, possessing the nWo World Tag Team Championships, the WCW World Television Championship, and after Souled Out, the WCW World Heavyweight Championship one more time! Hogan finally spoke, telling Gene Okerlund simply that tonight JJ Dillon, the WCW President will make the right decision and that will be giving Hogan a rematch with Sting for the title at Souled Out! COMMERCIAL - The Giant def. The Barbarian (w/Jimmy Hart) (02:14) This was pure domination, as the Giant continued to decimate the WCW roster, still trying to persue a match with Kevin Nash of the nWo, one on one. The Barbarian put on a decent fight, but not good enough as Giant quickly drove through Barbarian, finishing him with a Chokeslam for the win. The Giant celebrated his win to cheers, as he took a microphone and loudly told Kevin Nash that he doesn't care if he's got a match this Monday on Nitro with Bret Hart and the British Bulldog, the bottom line is that he wants to confront Nash face-to-face, and if he doesn't meet him in this ring on Monday, the Giant will come looking for him instead! We returned once more to the announce team, as Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay with Lee Marshall discussed this Monday's episode of Nitro shaping up very well with the Outsiders taking on Bret Hart and the British Bulldog & Saturn facing Chris Benoit in Raven's Rules, as well as the Giant wanting to meet Kevin Nash face-to-face, man-to-man. But in addition, this Monday night we will see the first appearance of the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair on WCW programming in over a month, we will hear from Flair this Monday on Nitro. COMMERCIAL Juventud Guerrera def. Eddie Guerrero in a number one contender's match (07:35) Another high-flying, grappling match on the first edition of Thursday Thunder, as the winner of this match would go on to face Rey Mysterio Jr on January 24 at Souled Out. Juventud Guerrera and Eddie Guerrero exchanged high-flying combat, Guerrero worked at the knee of Guerrera; Guerrera firing back with agility but Guerrero could catch him up. It seemed as though Guerrero got too confident at times as Guerrera slipped out of a single-legged crab, soon going up for the 450 splash just for Eddie to dive up there as well. Guerrero tried for the frankensteiner, but Juventud placed him back on the second rope, a top rope sunset flip somehow knocking off the victory! The fans in the Ocean Center popped loudly as Juventud Guerrera rolled out of the ring quickly, Guerrera celebrating gleefully whilst Eddie Guerrero remained seated in shock in the middle of the ring! It had been a rough night for the Guerrero wrestling family, Guerrera now going on to face Rey Mysterio Jr for the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship at Souled Out! - A graphic aired, promoting this weekend's episode of WCW Saturday Night, live on the TBS Superstation at 6:05pm, to be main evented by Scott Norton in action against Scott Steiner! - Michael Buffer was in the ring, as he was ready to give the ring announcements for our main event. COMMERCIAL BREAKLex Luger def. Randy Savage (w/Elizabeth) (10:22) These two have quite a defined history dating back to the Fall, the "Total Package" motivated to do something about the nWo's apparent declining, but Randy Savage wouldn't allow it easily, trying to pull out all of the stops. "Macho Man" used Elizabeth as a shield and everything, even going for the high axe handle from the top to the ringside/guard rail. Savage worked the throat and tried to go for the Diving Elbow, but Eric Bischoff came to ringside, distracting the referee! This is when Hollywood Hogan slid a chair into Savage, Savage reluctantly picking it up and getting prepared to swing for Luger, Luger ducking and nailing a powerslam on Savage, then slamming the chair into Savage's head himself! Luger knocked Bischoff off of the apron and covered, securing the three. The interference of the nWo had backfired inadvertently, Lex Luger celebrating his win to cheers, then leaving as Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff got into the ring, Hogan taking a microphone quickly. Hogan told JJ Dillon to stop playing with his mind, stating that he knew as did everybody in this arena that Hollywood deserved this match, that everybody wanted to see Hogan vs Sting III at Souled Out on pay-per-view for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Hogan told the WCW President to come out and announce the number one contender already, and that's when Dillon made his way down to the rampway where Gene Okerlund was, and Dillon told Hogan that if he really wanted to know who was to face Sting at Souled Out 98', it will be "Macho Man" Randy Savage! The fans cheered as Hogan seemed outraged, and that's when Sting rappelled down from the rafters! The fans went crazy as Sting started laying into Hogan and Savage until the nWo left as quick as they could for ringside! Hogan and Savage got into an argument as Bischoff barged past Savage, Savage clocking the nWo President! Savage was angry as Hogan and Rick Rude then tried to calm him down, the first episode of Thursday Thunder going off the air!

11PM - END SHOW - 3.6

THE BRIT REPORT Presented by Matt Burkeon Friday 16th January 1998
-- You can see my review of WCW Monday Nitro here.
-- Happy New Year, folks. A lot went down already in the first week of 1998, allow me to break it down into the main behind-the-scenes occurrences.
-- Davey Boy Smith as we all know signed with World Championship Wrestling over Christmas and debuted on-screen this past Monday on Nitro. Jim Neidhart after being humiliated previously on WWF RAW is WAR, has reportedly also signed with WCW. This begins the speculation of a Hart Foundation stable beginning in WCW to perhaps oppose the nWo.
-- In a note linked to the prior, as far as we know, Owen Hart has previously demanded a release from the World Wrestling Federation, but has been locked down. Owen, several months into his new three-year deal, will be sued by the company if he goes against the decline and walks out of the company.
-- There was an apparent argument at the January 6th television tapings between Fit Finley and Bobby Walker, apparently over who wanted to portray the heel. Walker and Finley ended up in a shoving war started by Walker, but Finley took him down in a headlock. WCW officials have reprimanded Walker by placing a "no-TV clause", removing him from all televised events for a thirty day period.
-- Word has it that there may be some additions to the revolving and expanding nWo faction within coming weeks. We're not sure who exactly, but allegedly Chris Jericho and Lex Luger are in the cards to make the change.
-- WCW Monday Nitro continued to destroy WWF RAW is WAR in the past two weeks, gathering a 4.65 for the 12/29 show and a 4.2 for the 1/5 show. Meanwhile, Monday Night RAW achieved a 3.6 for the 12/29 show, followed by a 3.3 for the 1/5 show.
-- WCW are reportedly interested in one or two stars from Extreme Championship Wrestling, although we're not overly certain who yet.
-- Rick Martel signed with World Championship Wrestling on Monday night prior to Nitro. Martel was previously backstage at the 12/29 show, observing.
-- We will have coverage on Thursday Thunder next week, I'm yet to watch the show. In addition, the rating should be announced ready for next week's newsletter.
-- WCW presents Souled Out 98' on 1/24/98. The working card for the show is as follows: - Sting vs Randy Savage for the WCW World Heavyweight title - Rey Mysterio Jr vs Juventud Guerrera for the WCW World Cruiserweight title - TBA

Pardon my horrendous knowledge of this time in WCW. I'd feel terrible about not leaving you anything, though, so here goes. A good victory to kick off the inaugural lThunder for Curt Hennig. Needed it after failing to capture the United States Championship. A solid promo from Hall and Nash. Like the challenge they laid out as them against Bret Hart and Davey Boy sounds pretty sick. Great Cruiserweight match next. Mysterio getting the victory is fine, I'm interested in seeing if Eddie will have something to say about his nephew's failure tonight. Solid set up for Diamond Dallas Page and Konnan's match next Monday on Nitro. Liked seeing this return of Rick Martel. Hopefully unlike real life, his run isn't cut short. A good Television Title match to wrap up the first hour, and what a finish. Bagwell retaining by the skin of his teeth, expecting a rematch soon, possibly as early as next Nitro. Sounded like a nice match up with Benoit and Saturn, and the stipulation from Raven added to it. Expecting Benoit to come out of the rematch on Nitro victorious. A nice promo from the nWo, clearly referencing the tension with Hogan and Savage. I feel that the apology to bring them back as one may never come. Easy victory for the Giant. Solid progression for his feud with Nash, and I anticipate that bout, whenever it occurs. Also interested in seeing if you keep the Jackknife botch in their eventual match. Good No.1 contender's bout, and Mysterio/Juventud sounds like a nice match. Interested in seeing where Eddie goes from here, or if he can find his way into the Cruiserweight Championship match for Souled Out. And lastly, great main event victory for Lex Luger over Savage. Great ending, and a nice call to have Savage as Sting's next challenge for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. A solid inaugural edition of Thunder, Nitro next Monday looks sick.

| WCW MONDAY NITRO #123: Monday 12th January 1998 - The Coliseum in Jacksonville, FL - 8,718 |

8:57PM - FIRST HOUR - 4.65

- A replay kicked us off tonight on Monday Nitro, taking us back to the series premiere of Thursday Thunder, where Lex Luger and Randy Savage competed into a controversial finish, Luger with the win. Luger left as Hollywood Hogan of the nWo spilled out to the ring, demanding he know the next number one contender to Sting's WCW World Heavyweight Championship, who, as revealed by JJ Dillon, was none other than Hogan's own ally, Randy Savage! Hogan was furious.
- We cut straight to the Jacksonville Coliseum for Nitro, as the Nitro Girls were shown dancing by the rampway. Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko welcomed us to the show, instantly narrating the replay we'd just seen from Thursday Thunder, discussing the tension within the nWo following Thursday. They announced that tonight we would see all of the fallout from the first Thunder in the next two hours of THE number one promotion in North America, Monday Nitro!
- The theme of Hollywood Hogan hit to kick us off, as the leader of the New World Order made his way out to the ring not looking too pleased, accompanied as always by Eric Bischoff. Hogan and Bischoff got into the ring as Eric picked up a microphone, discussing how displeased he was; that he was the nWo President, and he wasn't even filled in by WCW President, JJ Dillon on the nWo member named to challenge the WCW World Heavyweight Champion Sting, in twelve days at Souled Out! Bischoff stated that he planned on filing a complaint against Dillon, alongside all of the recent tragic affairs decided by the corrupt President! Hogan then took the microphone as he discussed how he rightfully shouldn't have lost the WCW World Heavyweight title to Sting at Starrcade, and he had the title won the night after on Nitro, and yet suddenly he is thrown out of sight from contending to the title for Randy Savage? He may be in the nWo as well, but after Savage lost to Lex Luger last Thursday, how can he be trusted to knock off the WCW champion!
- With that, Randy Savage soon stormed out, accompanied by Elizabeth by the hand. The "Macho Man" couldn't believe what he was hearing, the mixed reaction from the Jacksonville crowd saying it all. Randy got into the ring and asked Hogan what he meant by his comments, stating that he doesn't know who Hogan thinks he is, he's a hot head, much like he's always been! Randy told Hollywood that he's won more matches lately than the almighty "Hulkster" himself, he's lost too many times to Sting to deserve another rematch! Bischoff then got in the middle, telling the two to calm down, stating that he's sick and tired of these miscommunications, these attempts to throw apart the nWo just like that! Eric told Hogan and Savage that they weren't enemies, that they are two of the top dogs in the nWo, a massive cog in the machine. Bischoff stated that once he got his act together and got JJ Dillon removed from power, Hulk and "Macho Man" would dominate World Championship Wrestling! Bischoff then left, Hogan and Savage left in the ring.
- The opening video package for Monday Nitro aired.

- Kidman (w/Lodi) def. Ultimo Dragon (05:42) Kidman was in the beginning of a hot night for Raven and the Flock, perhaps taking in Chris Benoit. But meanwhile, Ultimo Dragon was a thorn in his side, using all sort of aerial acrobatics to take the Flock member off-guard despite the assistance provided by the sign-bearing Lodi. Eventually, Ultimo set up for the Dragon Sleeper, but Chris Jericho soon came out, acting very obnoxious, talking about how sorry he was to everybody and that he was going to make it up to everyone. Meanwhile, this distracted the Dragon, and Kidman capitalized with a quick roll-up victory! Kidman celebrated his win to boos, rolling out of the ring. Meanwhile, Ultimo Dragon looked quite angry, Chris Jericho making the mistake of turning his back on Ultimo and talking about how on Thursday Thunder he'd be sure to finally be victorious. This allowed Ultimo to perfectly time a corkscrew plancha over the top rope onto Jericho! COMMERCIAL- Bill Goldberg def. David Taylor (01:32) Bill Goldberg proved impressive last week, the undefeated one making short work of the British veteran, Steven Regal. But how he had to take care of Regal's Blue Blood ally, David Taylor tonight. Goldberg charged through him, Taylor getting in some shots, but Goldberg finished him off with the Spear and Jackhammer for the win. Bill Goldberg celebrated his win, a very adrenaline-filled enigma in World Championship Wrestling. - We soon went to the rampway, where Gene Okerlund reminded us of how close Booker T came to taking the WCW World Television Championship away from the short-reigned champ, Buff Bagwell last Thursday on Thunder. Okerlund introduced Booker, as he made his way out to a solid reaction. Gene asked Booker if there was no time limit, whether he thinks he could dethrone the nWo member and rightfully claim his WCW World Television Championship. Booker told Gene that he could, he stated how Bagwell was a solid athlete, but when it came to being in the ring with him, Booker can go one mile further than him! Booker told Bagwell to get his job done tonight in his title defence, and get back to him when he says "give me a rematch, sucka!". COMMERCIAL- We returned to see Gene Okerlund on the rampway once again, as this time he welcomed out Bret "Hitman" Hart! Bret made his way out to the rampway to a loud ovation, Okerlund this time apologizing to Bret for interrupting his workout for his first official match in World Championship Wrestling later tonight. Bret commented, telling Gene that he was sure he'd get the job done, stating how Kevin Nash and Scott Hall are two guys he knows well and has wrestled a lot in the past, and tonight him and Davey Boy Smith were going to get the job done. Okerlund then referred to a challenge Scott Hall sent to WCW which aired last night on the syndicated show PRO, to which the promo then aired; consisting of Hall calling Bret out to a match at Souled Out in twelve days. Bret then confidently accepted, telling Scott that it'd be his pleasure to make him tap! - Buff Bagwell (w/Scott Norton) def. Scott Armstrong (w/Steve Armstrong) to retain the WCW World Television Championship (03:41) Bagwell made quick work of the Armstrong brother tonight, as Steve came out to support Scott whilst Scott Norton was in the nWo member's corner. Bagwell dominated Armstrong, before connecting with the Buff Blockbuster for the successful three count. Buff Bagwell celebrated his win to boos, as Steve Armstrong stepped in to attend to Scott, but that's when Bagwell grabbed him and gave him a huge clothesline! Scott Norton followed up by giving Steve the Shoulderbreaker before leaving with the WCW World Television Champion. - The Nitro Girls danced in the crowd, as Tony Schiavone, Larry Zbyszko and Mike Tenay promoted Diamond Dallas Page defending the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship against Konnan, next! COMMERCIAL - Diamond Dallas Page def. Konnan (w/Vincent) to retain the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship (07:11) DDP has already been a fighting champion, only a few weeks into his reign, this time taking on the nWo member, Konnan. And with Vincent at ringside, it was sure to be quite a struggle for Dallas Page in what was virtually a handicapped environment. Konnan got in his rolling clothesline and worked the spine in hopes of locking in the Tequila Sunrise, but DDP soon fired back and also took out Vincent, leading the Mexican into the Diamond Cutter for another victory! Diamond Dallas Page celebrated his win to cheers as Vincent and Konnan remained down, DDP celebrating with the WCW US Heavyweight Championship whilst leaving through the crowd!

10:03PM - SECOND HOUR - 4.8

- The second hour fireworks went off, Larry Zbyszko being replaced by Bobby Heenan.
COMMERCIAL
- The WCW Nitro Party vignette aired.
- The Guerreros def. El Dandy & Silver King (04:31) The Guerreros had a bad week last Thursday on Thunder, being upstaged by Rey Mysterio Jr and Juventud Guerrera, but they were back on track tonight against two fellow lucha libre stars from Mexico. Chavo showed a lot of promise and potential, smoothly trading tags with uncle Eddie, Chavo with a tornado DDT at one point, sharply taking Silver King down. Eddie soon followed up, a Frog Splash giving the Guerreros the win. Eddie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero Jr celebrated their win together as Gene Okerlund joined them in the ring, being asked by Eddie earlier on tonight to come meet them in the ring following their match. Eddie told Gene that he wanted everybody to know that the cruiserweight division is no longer for him, or his nephew! From now on, they were going to contend for the WCW World Tag Team Championship, and they would be meeting Rick and Scott Steiner in this ring very very soon! Gene jokingly stated that they'd have to climb an ever-growing list of tag teams to get to that level, Eddie and Chavo disgustingly leaving the ring. We went to another replay from Thursday Thunder, as Chris Benoit had Saturn on the verge of defeat until Saturn got himself counted out. Raven told Benoit that he had to do it all over again on Nitro, except under Raven's Rules, and if he lost, he must join the Flock! COMMERCIAL - Saturn def. Chris Benoit in a Raven's Rules match (09:34) Oddly enough, there were no other Flock members here to manage Saturn tonight. The "Canadian Crippler" worked the shoulder of Saturn as Saturn took it to brawling and grappling, taking a steel chair and a stop sign, but nothing seemed to be able to put Benoit away. Saturn soon used the chair on the shoulder before applying the Rings of Saturn, but Benoit still refused to give in. Benoit then had Saturn in the Crippler Crossface, but Saturn got to the ropes. In a last-resort moment, Benoit went for the Diving Headbutt on Saturn on top of a stop sign, but Raven came through the crowd, moving Saturn and Benoit faceplanted the stop sign! Saturn covered and it was over. The crowd booed as Raven slowly got into the ring, Saturn's hand raised in the victory, but the bigger story here was that Chris Benoit now had to join the Flock! Raven picked Benoit's carcass up before planting it with an Evenflow DDT, Raven leaving with Saturn. - We went up to Gene Okerlund on the rampway as he introduced the man of the hour, the Giant. Out came the big man as he has been wanting to get his hands on Kevin Nash for several months. Okerlund told Giant how he asked for this last Thursday on Thunder, but now it may actually be happening, calling out Nash. The Giant told Gene how he was looking forward to kicking his ass at Starrcade 97', but he had to think of a phony excuse to get out of it. But not again, because he was laying down the law to Nash, one-on-one, the Powerbomb vs the Chokeslam, January 24th, Souled Out! The fans cheered as Giant told Nash he had until Thursday to accept his offer, otherwise he'd just have to start running in on his matches and hunting him down! COMMERCIAL - Randy Savage (w/Elizabeth) def. Lex Luger (05:29) A rematch from Thursday Thunder, as this time there was to be no interference from any member of the WCW locker room or the New World Order. Savage had to maintain his position as the number one contender to Sting, so he did whatever it took, including nearly guillotining the "Total Package" over the guardrail from the top rope. Luger soon worked Savage over and went for the Torture Rack, but Elizabeth served as distraction, Savage with the rolling clutch cradle for the win! Randy Savage celebrated his win to boos, as the "Macho Man" was seemingly prepared for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship encounter with Sting! But that's when the lights went out, and when they returned, Sting was at ringside with his arm around Elizabeth! Savage freaked out and rushed out to see Sting, the champ delivering several shots to Savage, but Savage soon kicked Sting in the gut and crawled away, Sting left at ringside, a smirk on the champ's face! COMMERCIAL- Michael Buffer made the ring introductions for the upcoming match, our main event tag team match! - Bret Hart & The British Bulldog def. The Outsiders (08:29) A chaotic match was guaranteed, but it ended up entirely clean of interference. Bret Hart wanted to make a clean slate here in WCW, in his first match teaming with his brother-in-law, Davey Boy Smith. Kevin Nash and Scott Hall went to work on the shoulder of the British Bulldog, Hall trying to taunt the "Hitman". Hall and Nash continued to go after the shoulder, almost putting Bulldog away without Bret actually getting in more ring time. But Bulldog managed to slip out of the Jackknife Powerbomb from "Big Sexy", and Bulldog got the tag to Bret! Hart cleared house, a backbreaker and the elbow drop to Nash, and that's when all four came into the ring. Bret and Scott took the ring as Bulldog sent Nash sailing to the floor; and Hall soon went for the Outsider's Edge, Bret slipping out into the sunset flip, applying the Sharpshooter and securing the win! Bret Hart celebrated his win to cheers as the British Bulldog got into the ring, joining the "Hitman" as Bret and Davey Boy Smith had done it in their first match in World Championship Wrestling! Meanwhile, Kevin Nash thought he could get away, but the Giant suddenly came from behind, knocking Nash down and tossing him back into the ring! Bulldog and Bret kept Nash from running, and the Giant then delivered a massive Chokeslam on Kevin Nash! Giant, Bret and Davey celebrated as Nitro went off the air.

11:01PM - END SHOW - 4.8

I loved this time in WCW. Good to see this going. Interesting opening and I like how you're building tension between Savage and Hogan. I wonder if this is going anywhere in the long run. Looking forward to see where it's going. Good to see Goldberg pick up a win and I'm interested to see how you book him. It will be interesting to see how long you let his streak last and how it ends. I'm really looking forward to what you do with him. I think WWE really dropped the ball and only booked him right a few times, so I hope you can re-create his "right place at the right time" run in WCW. I like that Bret brought up his past with Hall and Nash when talking about the main event tonight. Souled Out is shaping up to be good with the addition of Bret and Hall. I like the layout of the show and how you've broken it up into two hours. It ran through my head to do that with my WWE 12 and I honestly didn't even know you did it. I like how it looks and I think it's a cool addition to the layout. Interesting to see Guerrero say they're going for the Tag Team belts now. Should be interesting. Like the Raven and Benoit feud, nice way to get Raven some heat with him costing Benoit the match against Saturn. Like the build for Sting and Savage and how you had Savage get a win over Luger to get some momentum going in to Souled Out. I was surprised that there was no interference but that was a nice surprise and good win for Bulldog and Hart. Solid show, I'm looking forward to Souled Out.

- The opening video package for WCW Thursday Thunder aired.
- Pyrotechnics went off as we were introduced to the show by Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Lee Marshall. The three discussed Nitro last Monday night before promoting several matches for tonight, one of which being Davey Boy Smith in action against Curt Hennig; plus, will Kevin Nash accept the challenge made by the Giant on Monday Nitro?; rivals team up once again as Juventud Guerrera and Rey Mysterio Jr meet to take on the Guerreros, Eddie and Chavo Jr!; Plus, the WCW World Tag Team Championships will be at stake as the Steiner Brothers defend against two members of the Flock!
- The Public Enemy def. Hugh Morrus & The Barbarian (w/Jimmy Hart) in a Lakeland Street Fight (05:18) A heavy-hitting match to kick off Thunder tonight, as the fans were consumed in this battle, weapons flying everywhere. This match was proposed on Saturday Night by Jimmy Hart and the Faces of Fear, and the Public Enemy seemed to be wanting revenge against their opponents in previous weeks. Rocco Rock and Johnny Grunge teamed up well, but Hugh Morrus soon cleared house, going for the No Laughing Matter through the table on Grunge, but Grunge moved and Morrus went flying through the table, giving the Public Enemy the win. The crowd cheered for the Public Enemy, as the official raised their hand in victory, but that's when Meng stormed down to the ring, this uncaged warrior rushing into the ring, taking out Johnny Grunge with the Tongan Death Grip; tossing Rocco Rock over the top rope! Meng stood dominant on behalf of the Faces of Fear. COMMERCIAL- The theme of the nWo hit as we returned to Thursday Thunder, and with that, out came Kevin Nash and Scott Hall; the Outsiders. The self-proclaimed "nWo World Tag Team Champions made their way to the ring as they discussed their failure last Monday on Nitro to take down Bret Hart and Davey Boy Smith. Scott vowed to take the arrogant "Hitman" down and send him on a one-way trip right back to New York at Souled Out 98' despite the loss. Nash then talked about his dodging of the dumb Giant, who has about the intelligence of braindead chimpanzee! Nash talked about his Powerbomb, and how Giant thinks he can't pick him up for it, but he'll see once and for all, because despite Giant's menacing features, where he acts all tough; he doesn't realize how good Nash is himself, and how dangerous "Big Sexy" can be. Nash told Giant that he'd see him at Souled Out! They fulfilled their survey, as once again the nWo won against World Championship Wrestling. - Scott Hall (w/Kevin Nash) def. Bobby Eaton (03:38) Scott Hall managed to keep on top of the veteran, "Beautiful" Bobby continuously trying to make a comeback with a missile dropkick, but Hall managed to get in front once again, finally leaving Eaton lying with the Outsider's Edge! Scott Hall celebrated his win to boos as Kevin Nash joined him in the ring, the Outsiders celebrating the win with the nWo World Tag Team Championships. Louie Spiccoli then came out, as he joined them in the ring bizarrely, the younger Spiccoli seeking alliance with the nWo? COMMERCIAL - We returned to Thursday Thunder as Gene Okerlund welcomed out the British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith. Davey came out to quite a positive reaction as Okerlund asked Davey about the atmosphere on Monday Nitro when he managed to get the win with Bret Hart against the Outsiders. Davey told Gene how the reaction was electric, and it feels great to be back in WCW. He talked about the New World Order of professional wrestling, how they are like a cancer, and how he hopes to do good and clear out the nWo with the rest of the WCW stars! This is when Curt Hennig came out, interrupting the British Bulldog, and Hennig took the microphone from him too. Curt told Davey about how they've crossed paths before, but never in the ring. And now Davey wants to make enemies with the nWo. But what if the New World Order were to make an offer to Davey, that he couldn't refuse? To join the nWo and escape any chaos made from themselves. Davey told Curt that he'd never turn his back on the fans, his family or his friends! He said how Curt used to be a nice guy, but not anymore! Hennig told Davey that this left him no other choice; and challenged Davey to a match later tonight on Thunder! Davey accepted, leaving. - A replay of WCW Monday Nitro aired, with Booker T challenging Buff Bagwell to a rematch for the WCW World Television Championship. Bagwell is still yet to respond. - Booker T def. Kendall Windham (02:30) Booker T showed off more impressive momentum against the larger Windham brother, Kendall. Kendall put up a fight, but in the end it was Booker with the Harlem Hangover getting the win. Booker T celebrated his win to cheers before Konnan suddenly hit the ring, jumping Booker from behind and applying the Tequila Sunrise on Booker! The crowd booed as this was clearly sent out by the WCW World Television Champion, referees trying to get Konnan off of Booker! COMMERCIAL - We returned to Thunder as Gene Okerlund was on the rampway, introducing Macho Man Randy Savage! Savage made his way out to the rampway to a mixed reaction as Okerlund asked for his response to the attack made on himself on Elizabeth last Monday on Nitro by Sting. Savage called Sting a coward, talking about how the WCW World Heavyweight Champion was a menace, and that he's in cohoots with World Championship Wrestling, plotting to bring down the New World Order right to its seams! But it won't happen, because as long as Macho is around, he will stay on top. In regards to his match at Souled Out, Savage has a proposal to give to Sting; a tag team match, this Monday on Nitro. Sting can bring a friend, and he'll bring a friend! Savage talked about looking forward to winning the WCW World Heavyweight Championship one more time! - The "WCW On The Road..." vignette aired, showcasing upcoming dates in different towns. - Chris Jericho def. Lizmark Jr (04:55) This was Chris Jericho's first win in several months as he finally broke the streak against the rookie luchadore from Mexico, Lizmark Jr. Jericho was outsmarted by Lizmark in the opening moments, Lizmark crazy with several high-flying, fast-paced moves taking the "Lionheart" down, but Jericho soon made a comeback, stiff kicks striking Lizmark in the spine and head. Jericho soon nailed Lizmark with a powerbomb, connecting it to the Liontamer, and Jericho got the victory! Chris Jericho celebrated his win to boos as Jericho proclaimed he was the greatest ever! Jericho refused to let go, but it all came to a change when Ultimo Dragon ran down to the ring, scaring Jericho off up the aisleway! Ultimo aided to Lizmark Jr, still sore over Jericho's arrogance. - Tony Schiavone, Lee Marshall and Bobby Heenan were shown on commentary, as they referred to the controversial effects last Monday on Nitro, as Raven caused Chris Benoit to lose in the Raven's Rules match against Saturn. This caused Benoit to have to join the Flock, led by arch nemesis, Raven. Up next, we will see Chris Benoit in action, as we will also hopefully hear some words from the "Canadian Crippler himself! COMMERCIAL - Steven Regal (w/David Taylor) def. Chris Benoit (w/The Flock) (10:32) The crowd still showed support for the "Canadian Crippler" as he awkwardly came out with the Flock accompanying him. Benoit and Steven Regal knew each other very well and had quite the confrontation in this technical masterpiece, Benoit very well nearly getting the win on several occasions. Benoit applied the Crippler Crossface, but Regal rolled out and went for the Knee Trembler, Benoit with the dragon screw into the sharpshooter, but Lodi got on the apron! Benoit looked annoyed as Regal cradled Benoit for the three. The crowd booed as Steven Regal celebrated his win, David Taylor leaving with Regal, as Chris Benoit slowly stood up, seemingly trying to contain his frustration against the Flock, who cost him his own match. Suddenly, Saturn attacked Benoit with a German suplex, as Raven got into the ring. Gene Okerlund got into the ring, asking Raven why he just cost Benoit the match, as Raven explained to Okerlund that he had the "Crippler" join the Flock because he wanted Benoit to know to another level how much better they all were compared to Benoit. Raven told Benoit that they made him swear on an oath, never to disobey them or face lethal consequences, and also never to lose, or face punishment. At that moment, Kidman, Riggs, Saturn and Hammer got into the ring with leather straps, and they all seemed ready to put a whipping on the "Crippler"! At that moment, Diamond Dallas Page hit the ring, clearing house, clotheslines to Hammer and Kidman, the Diamond Cutter to Kidman; but that's when Benoit gave DDP the German suplex! Benoit looked unhappy as he left to loud boos.

9:11PM - SECOND HOUR - 3.6

- The second-hour pyrotechnics went off, as Tony Schiavone, Lee Marshall and Mike Tenay welcomed us to the second hour of Thursday Thunder! They discussed what had already gone down in the first hour, and what was still to come.
- Bill Goldberg def. Yuji Nagata (w/Sonny Oono) (01:28) Goldberg dominating Yuji Nagata, as Nagata managed to get in several stiff kicks, but Goldberg still managed to dominate, unleashing the Spear followed by the Jackhammer for the victory. Goldberg celebrated his win to cheers, the undefeated rookie very popular with WCW fans in Lakeland! COMMERCIAL - Gene Okerlund was on the rampway with WCW President, JJ Dillon as Okerlund asked Dillon about why he wanted to conduct this interview. Dillon told Okerlund that he wanted to make an announcement for Monday Nitro on TNT. As of this Monday night, Nitro will now become a three-hour live broadcast every single week! The crowd cheered loudly, as Dillon then made another batch of announcements; this Monday night, we will see the return of the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair! Plus, he's made it; Hollywood Hogan against the Giant this Monday on Nitro! - The Guerreros def. Juventud Guerrera & Rey Mysterio (06:33) This was a competitive match as you could imagine, the two cruiserweight matches from last week's series premiere of Thursday Thunder, combined into one tonight. Eddie and Chavo Guerrero Jr managed to isolate Juventud Guerrera from his partner, the WCW World Cruiserweight Champion, Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio soon made the hot tag, and he cleared house, taking down both Guerreros and going for the springboard hurricanrana, but Juventud cut him off and knocked him out into the ring. Chavo then planted the tornado DDT on Rey for the three! The Guerreros celebrated their in as Eddie and Chavo Guerrero Jr seemed to be climbing the ranks of the WCW World Tag Team Championship ladder, just knocking off a win against rivals in their own right, Juventud Guerrera and Rey Mysterio Jr. Mysterio remained down in the ring as Juvi then came off of the top rope with the 450 splash, Guerrera wanting Rey's WCW World Cruiserweight Championship. - Another replay from Monday Nitro aired, reviewing the situation with Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage, highlighting more speculation that the nWo was falling apart from the inside. - Gene Okerlund was back at the rampway with Rick Rude, as Okerlund pondered to Rude about where he stands whilst the nWo seems to be falling apart. Rude talked about how he's in a comfortable place, he's friends with both Randy Savage and Hollywood Hogan, and honestly he thinks that the faction will live on, the New World Order have been around for over a year and a half now, and he doesn't see them parting! If anything, they'll just grow stronger one more time! - An advertisement aired, promoting WCW Saturday Night this weekend on the TBS Superstation; to be main evented by Ray Traylor in action with Scott Norton! Plus the WCW World Television Championship will be on the line, plus more, all this Saturday from 6:05pm. COMMERCIAL - Dean Malenko def. La Parka by disqualification (04:04) The "Man of 1,004 Holds" seemed to be mastering La Parka around, wrapping his leg up and working away at it in hopes of applying the Texas Cloverleaf, but Parka managed to slip out of the ring, grabbing a steel chair, and he slammed it into the spine of poor Malenko! The crowd booed as La Parka clocked Dean Malenko again in the head with the steel chair, this Mexican luchadore then bizarrely dancing on top of the chair, and you had to believe Malenko would be wanting retribution for this! - An advertisement aired, promoting the WCW Bruise Cruise; win to be able to attend a boat trip with WCW superstars! - The Steiner Brothers def. Los Vilanos (01:48) The Steiners cleared house with Los Vilanos, IV and V dominated by Rick and Scott, as Scott took over most of the action, the Frankensteiner from big Scott putting the fall over on V. The crowd cheered as the Steiner Brothers celebrated another victory, impressive for the WCW World Tag Team Champions. - Tony Schiavone, Lee Marshall and Bobby Heenan hyped up our main event as Curt Hennig meets Davey Boy Smith in what is sure to be an exciting main event, next! COMMERCIAL - Curt Hennig def. Davey Boy Smith (08:42) A competitive main event between the two former Intercontinental Champions in the WWF, but here they were known as two different identities, Curt Hennig trying to slow down the larger British Bulldog, but Davey Boy Smith managed to use his power to throw Hennig around freely. Rick Rude came to ringside to accompany Hennig mid-match, as Davey delivered a Running Powerslam, Rude placing Hennig's foot on the ropes! Smith was annoyed, but not as annoyed as when Kevin Nash and Scott Hall came down to ringside, the Outsiders there to once again outnumber Davey Boy Smith! Smith continued to battle, making a comeback, but then the Giant came to ringside, brawling with Rude and the Outsiders, but this distracted Bulldog, and he turned around to receive the Hennig Plex from Hennig giving him the win! - The crowd booed as Curt Hennig celebrated his win, the Giant then getting into the ring, grabbing Hennig by the throat but Scott Hall and Kevin Nash chop blocked him! The Outsiders stomped away at Giant as Hennig joined in, also giving Davey Boy Smith a beatdown! Lex Luger suddenly ran out, but was also taken out by Nash, the crowd disapproving as the New World Order seemed to be in control once again! Thursday Thunder went off the air.

9:58PM - END SHOW - 3.6

THE BRIT REPORT Presented by Matt Burke on Friday 16th January 1998
-- You can see my review of WCW Monday Nitro here.
-- In a follow-up from last week, Owen Hart appears to be going nowhere, due to Vince McMahon turning down Hart's demand to get himself released. As far as we know Owen will remain with the company until the Summer of 2001.
-- Allegedly, Ric Flair has not been appearing on WCW television as of late due to higher ups not being impressed with Flair's behavior of the product lately at all. Flair is scheduled to make his return from a four week absence this Monday on Nitro. It is unknown why he has been advertised, or what he is scheduled to be doing.
-- In addition to Rick Martel signing with World Championship Wrestling last week, we can announce that Marty Jannetty has also signed with WCW.
-- WCW Monday Nitro this past week managed to score a 4.8 rating on 1/12. WWF RAW is WAR meanwhile, featuring the go-home build for the Royal Rumble pay-per-view this Sunday, scored an embarrassing 3.4 rating.
-- WCW Thursday Thunder's series premiere on 1/8 managed to score a 3.6. Early reports indicate that Thunder from last night (1/15) scored another 3.6. It should be interesting how the show holds up in upcoming weeks, after rumours stating that the show will not feature the same star power of talent as seen on Nitro on a weekly basis.

WCW Monday Night Nitro Hmm, looks like we've officially ushered in the Monday Night Wars. You're a year behind, however. ;) Anyways to the show. I was never much of a WCW fan, but I'm confident I'll look past that with you as the booker. Nice opening segment with Eric, Hogan, and Savage. Tensions building between the nWo is interesting, expecting Sting to retain at Souled Out however. Good way to kick off the show with some Crusierweight action. Kidman going over is sold with a distraction from Jericho. A Jericho/Dragon match should be fantastic. Obvious win for Goldberg, standard build at this point. Hopefully he does something soon, which doesn't include burying the Flock. Booker versus Bagwell for the Television Championship is intriguing. Bret Hart and Scott Hall on for the pay per view is good, a Hart/Bulldog vs. Outsiders on pay per view someday would be great. Good title defenses from both Bagwell and Dallas Page. Not too sure on having two title matches in a row just like that, however. Solid win for Eddie and Chavo; The Guerreros entering the tag division is interesting. Wouldn't mind them having a run with the straps. Nice Raven's Rules match; surprised to see Saturn go over. I'm interested in Benoit having to join the Flock. Big Sh..... er Giant and Nash at Souled Out is interesting, I would like to see the Giant 'hunting him down' storyline play out however. Savage picking up the win over Luger is great. Aftermath with Sting following the match was fine build for their match at Souled Out. Predictable, yet acceptable to have Bret and Bulldog win the tag match. Giant running down and hitting the Chokeslam on Nash is a fine way to end the show. Overall, it was a solid show and not much to complain about.
WCW Thunder Kicking the show off with a bang. Nice to see Public Enemy take the win. Oh man, even reading Meng's name installs fear in me. Good promos from the Outsides with Kevin Nash accepting the Giant's challenge. Disappointed about Giant's 'hunt' not taking place however. Standard win from Scott Hall over Bobby Eaton. Louie Spicolli joining the nWo most likely. Wasn't he Hall's lackey at one point? Good promo from Bulldog and Hennig, they should have a fantastic match. Decent win from Booker T, and I like how Bagwell sent Konnan after him. Savage's promo was great and the match booked for Nitro is interesting. I expect Sting and Luger against Savage and Hogan. Good win for Jericho and nice to see some more build for his feud with Dragon. Can't wait to hear what Benoit has to say. The whole Benoit/Regal/Flock segment was beautiful. The Flock causing Benoit the match before beating him down as DDP made the save; only for Benoit to lay out DDP. Fantastic. Typical win for Goldberg. Nitro going three hours is huge. Surprised to see Hogan taking on Giant. Maybe Nash or Bagwell will be Savage's partner? The Guerreros taking the win is great build for them, and a Mysterio/Guerrera match will be great. The Crusierweights are doing fine I must say. I liked the Malenko/Parka match and the finish was classic Parka. Excited to see more matches out of them. Obvious win for the WCW Tag Team Champions. Good win for Hennig in the main event despite interference from the nWo. Loved the nWo destroying everybody to close out the show. I'm liking what I see, Dan.
