| WCW MONDAY NITRO #124: Monday 19th January 1998 - The Superdome in New Orleans, LA - 24,211 |

7:57PM - FIRST HOUR - 4.8

- The opening video package for WCW Monday Nitro aired, and we go LIVE to the Superdome in New Orleans.
- Tony Schiavone, Larry Zbyszko and Mike Tenay greet us to the show as they talk about this three hour edition of Nitro, the first in a line of weekly three-hour programming from the top TV show in North America! They discuss tonight, and how we will see Sting and Randy Savage oppose each other in tag team action; the Giant will take on the leader of the nWo, Hollywood Hogan; the return of the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, the WCW World Television Championship on the line, plus so much more!
- The Nitro Girls are shown dancing in the ring to excite the fans in New Orleans.
- Psychosis def. Prince Iaukea (04:39) An impressive yet short cruiserweight match as Iaukea seemingly couldn't keep up with the luchadore, Psychosis. Iaukea tried to work away at the leg of Psychosis, but he soon got Iaukea in position for the Guillotine Legdrop and got the win. Psychosis got the win, as the announcers discussed how impressed they were, and how he may be next in line for a WCW World Cruiserweight Championship opportunity. - Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko continued to discuss the recent problems within the nWo, before revealing that Eric Bischoff announced last night on WCW PRO that Randy Savage reportedly agreed to give Hollywood Hogan the first title match once he beats Sting this Sunday at Souled Out. - The theme of the Macho Man hit, coincidentally, as out came Randy Savage himself, Savage out here by himself tonight. Savage got on the microphone in the ring, as he discussed the challenge made by himself last Thursday on Thunder to Sting; a tag team match tonight between himself and Sting for tonight's grand main event. Savage called Sting a coward for hiding up in the rafters every night of his life, talking about how he was once a patriot, now intimidated by the "Macho Man"s fame, and the nWo! Savage told Sting that wherever he was, he'd like to tell him that this Saturday at Souled Out, we'd crown a new WCW World Heavyweight Champion, and from that point on, Macho Madness will reign on, on Nitro, on Thunder, on the syndicates, everywhere! Savage then decided to announce his partner for tonight; Curt Hennig! Randy Savage left as boos hit the Superdome. COMMERCIAL- We went to a replay from last Thursday on Thunder, where Raven put Chris Benoit in action against Steven Regal; and Benoit was cost the match by his teammates chosen not by choice, the Flock. The Flock then proceeded to start whipping Benoit, just for Diamond Dallas Page to make the save. But to the shock of everyone, it was the "Canadian Crippler" to attack his own help from the WCW US Heavyweight Champion! - Gene Okerlund was standing by on the aisleway, as he discussed Chris Benoit's position with the Flock, inviting Benoit out for a chat. The "Canadian Crippler" came out as Okerlund asked Benoit what had gotten into him to attack Diamond Dallas Page. Benoit stated that Raven had brainwashed him. Take from the wealthy, and do whatever it takes to win, even against all odds. And this is why tonight, Raven will wipe the floor with the WCW US Heavyweight Champion and make Diamond Dallas Page suffer, and the world will see it. Benoit told Gene to get out of his face as he had a match to win. - Chris Benoit def. Bobby Eaton (03:26) The "Canadian Crippler" dominated the WCW veteran, "Beautiful" Bobby, as he went right to work on the right arm, a cross arm-breaker nearly putting Eaton away alone. Benoit liked the suffering in Eaton's face as the crowd booed, and the Crippler Crossface got the win. Chris Benoit refused to release the hold as the crowd booed, and out came Hammer, Saturn and Lodi of the Flock! The three stood on the rampway, Lodi with a sign reading "Benoit 4 LYF" as Benoit was forced off of Bobby Eaton. COMMERCIAL- The theme of Eric Bischoff hit to boos as we returned, and out came the leader of the New World Order, Bischoff coming out with a grin on his face, as he met Gene Okerlund in the ring, Gene asking Eric why he requested air time here tonight. Bischoff told Okerlund that he had the right, being the nWo President and all. Bischoff discussed his bright future for the New World Order, how the WCW World Heavyweight Championship will be back in the hands of the nWo after Saturday's Souled Out spectacular; how we will see a new nWo member surface; how Kevin Nash will dominate against the Giant and prove who the better big man truly is; And how Scott Hall will make Bret Hart sorry he never sided with the good guys! Bischoff continued to talk about tonight, and how it's a big night; the first three-hour Nitro of a series of three-hour Nitros. But there's one thing wrong, and that's the fact that it's not nWo branded! Bischoff referred to how close he came to claiming Nitro into the nWo's hands last month at Starrcade, and how he still thinks it should be theirs! Which is why, he wants Larry Zbyszko to put his saggy ass back into ring trunks, put those embarrassing boots back on, and challenge him for the show one more time next week on Nitro! The fans booed as Zbyszko popped up from the announce table to a loud reaction, as Zbyszko told Eric how irritating he finds him. Which is why he's the nWo President, and kicking his ass one more time would be very pleasant. He's on! The fans cheered as Bischoff grinned, telling Gene that that is all he wanted. - An advertisement aired, promoting WCW/nWo Souled Out 98', live on pay-per-view this Saturday night. - The Guerreros def. The Steiner Brothers (w/Ted Dibiase) in a non-title match (05:24) Eddie and Chavo Guerrero Jr have recently taken to trying to compete for the WCW World Tag Team Championships, and the Steiners gave them this opportunity last night on PRO for tonight. Scott dominated Chavo in the early goings, also allowing Eddie to get a shot in, and soon it was the Guerreros that got the better hand of the champs! It was surprising, but eventually Scott made the tag to Rick, and he cleared house. That was until Scott Hall and Kevin Nash came down to ringside, intimidating Ted Dibiase! Scott went out to stand up for his manager, but meanwhile Chavo came in with a shot from the WCW World Tag Team title, clocking Rick, and Eddie nailed the Frog Splash for a huge upset! The crowd booed as the Guerreros celebrated their win, Scott Steiner realizing what happened as he and Ted Dibiase aided to Rick; Eddie and Chavo were loving it, as were the Outsiders! Scott Hall and Kevin Nash purposely continued their rivalry with the Steiners, getting the better hand of them tonight. - Meanwhile, outside of the Superdome, we saw Chris Jericho try to enter the building, just to get turned down by security! Jericho threw a temper tantrum, kicking over a garbage can until security head Doug Dillinger gave him the okay; Jericho having made a scene before even competing tonight! COMMERCIAL- Lex Luger def. Konnan (w/Vincent) (06:03) The "Total Package" was called out to action against Konnan of the nWo on WCW Saturday Night, and the match was set up for tonight, Konnan annoyed with the amount of popularity WCW's Lex Luger has had as of late. Luger worked over Konnan as Konnan got in the odd shots against the former WCW World Heavyweight Champion. Vincent also tried to get involved, but the running forearm smash from the plate from Luger! Vincent was out on the floor, and Lex quickly synched in the Torture Rack for another victory! The crowd cheered as Lex Luger got the victory, celebrating his win over the two New World Orders members.

9:01PM - SECOND HOUR - 4.5

- The second hour fireworks went off, as Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko hyped up the second hour; the return of Ric Flair, Diamond Dallas Page meeting Raven; Davey Boy Smith in action, Bill Goldberg in action, Juventud Guerrera facing Dean Malenko; plus so much more!
- Suddenly, Larry Zbyszko was jumped from behind by Louie Spicolli, Spicolli wearing an nWo shirt! Spicolli gave Zbyszko a shot with a kendo stick, leaving Zbyszko down near the announce table! The crowd booed loudly, as Tony Schiavone and Mike Tenay attended to Zbyszko alongside the second hour colleague, Bobby Heenan.
COMMERCIAL
- Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay relayed the occurrences in the first hour with Randy Savage choosing Curt Hennig as his partner to face Sting and a partner of his choice in the main event; plus, we saw the Outsiders cost the Steiner Brothers a big match against the Guerreros in non-title action; but more importantly, Eric Bischoff issuing a challenge to Larry Zbyszko for the announce position on Nitro, one-on-one next week. This was then followed up by a planted seed, new nWo member Louie Spicolli taking Zbyszko out before the commercial with a kendo stick. They promised an update on Zbyszko for later on in the night.
- Booker T def. Steven Regal (07:23) A solid encounter between two high worthy contenders to the WCW World Television Championship, currently held by the ignorant and arrogant Buff Bagwell. Booker tried to give it his all, but found it hard against submission veteran, Steven Regal. Regal managed to wrap Booker up in various near-match ending scenarios such as the dreaded Regal Stretch, but Booker refused to give up. Booker made a comeback and caught Regal off-guard with a missile dropkick, scoring the victory! Booker T celebrated his win to cheers, when suddenly WCW President JJ Dillon came to ringside and took a microphone, then telling Booker about how Buff Bagwell has been trying to get out of a rematch with Booker; not anymore! This Saturday at Souled Out, Buff will defend the WCW World Television Championship against Booker, this time with no time limits! The fans cheered as Booker seemed very thrilled. COMMERCIAL - The Nitro Girls were shown dancing on the rampway, as the announcers discussed what had gone down on this chaotic night in World Championship Wrestling. - Bill Goldberg def. The Renegade (01:44) The man they call Goldberg has been racking up wins quickly as of late, and tonight was no different as he took on the wild Renegade, who we haven't seen in quite some time on this broadcast. Goldberg managed to make short work of Renegade, the Spear and the Jackhammer giving him another win. Goldberg celebrated his win to cheers as the Renegade was down and out, the fans chanting Bill's name along with his theme song, as the announcers talked about how impressive this man was coming along! - Back at the rampway, Gene Okerlund wanted to introduce us to former WCW World Heavyweight Champion, Rick Rude. Rude made his way out to Okerlund to boos, as the Insurance Policy of the nWo was asked by Okerlund the reasons for his appearance out here. Rude talked about how the nWo is not responsible for any of its members attacks on WCW stars and/or personnel, and thus, what Louie Spicolli did to Larry Zbyszko earlier tonight is completely fair and square, and he looks forward to taking over Monday Nitro with the New World Order starting next week! Rude then talked on behalf of Curt Hennig, about how he's been waiting for this opportunity since he lost the WCW United States Heavweight Championship in an unfair environment. Tonight, he's going to make a statement against whomever Sting chooses to be his partner. The crowd booed as Rude left. COMMERCIAL- Diamond Dallas Page def. Raven (w/The Flock) by disqualification in a non-title match (04:56) Diamond Dallas Page was called out by Raven on Saturday Night, and so here we were, Raven out to get some payback on DDP interrupting the Flock's initiation of Chris Benoit via country whippings, although Benoit then chose to turn his back on the WCW US Heavyweight Champion. DDP and Raven engaged in a sudden slugfest, Raven cowering from Page at various moments, unable to take the beating from the former street fighter, Diamond Dallas Page. Raven soon got on top of DDP, working over him with more heavy-hitting moves, but Page made a comeback as Raven tried to go for the Evenflow DDT; DDP's comeback was then suddenly cut off by the attack from Riggs and Sick Boy! The crowd booed as Riggs and Sick Boy laid a pounding on Page, but the WCW US Heavweight Champion made a resilient comeback, a Diamond Cutter for Sick Boy! Chris Benoit then got involved, locking in the Crippler Crossface on Diamond Dallas Page! The crowd booed as Benoit refused to leave, the Flock fending off any referees trying to break him off, and Raven took a microphone! He got into DDP's crossfaced face, telling him that he had a new contender to the US Heavyweight title; and it was Chris Benoit! And he'd face Benoit this Saturday night at Souled Out! Raven slammed the mic into DDP's face as Benoit released, the Flock leaving. - A limousine pulled up outside of the Superdome, and this could only mean one thing: the "Nature Boy" was here! COMMERCIAL- Gene Okerlund was in the ring, as he gave a hearty introduction to the "Nature Boy" of professional wrestling, Ric Flair! The theme hit, and out came the former twelve time WCW World Heavyweight Champion! Flair strutted out to a massive ovation wearing a trademark suit, as Flair strutted to the ring and did his shtick in the ring on the microphone with Gene Okerlund. He woo'd as he talked about where he had been lately, talking about how he's been fishing up some big plans, yet he has still been keeping an eye on the competition in World Championship Wrestling. He congratulated Sting on overtowering the nWo and Hollywood Hogan to claim the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, and how WCW seems to be getting back on top of the nWo. Flair talked about the future, and how it seems like he's done everything he's ever wanted to accomplish and more. And what he means by that is, he's ready for one more WCW World Heavyweight Championship reign! The fans cheered, as Flair talked about his past feuds with Sting, historic matches on pay-per-views and Clash of the Champions specials; but as much as he respects Sting, he's noticed a change in the man, and he wants to walk the aisle one more time and face Sting for the big gold belt, although it may not happen. Flair then spoke about Randy Savage, often rivals, but he once saw a great twinkle in the Macho Man's eyes, and now that twinkle is gone; he's a sellout to the New World Order! And he must be stopped now, he's getting too much like that Hollywood Hogan fellow. At that instance, out came Randy Savage himself, Savage seemingly short-circuiting as he told Ric Flair that he was nothing like what he claimed! Savage told Flair that he hated him, and always did, calling Ric a crybaby of a World Champion! Randy also blurted out that Flair was a dead man, when suddenly a dark figure rappelled down from the rafters; it was Sting! The fans roared as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion had his baseball bat in hand, Sting taking a microphone and introducing Randy Savage to Sting's partner for tonight; the "Nature Boy"! The crowd cheered as Savage was distraught, backing away from ringside in outrage! - The WCW Nitro Party segment of the week aired. - Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay relayed the segment moments ago, setting up tonight's colossal main event, Sting and Ric Flair taking on Curt Hennig and Randy Savage! They showed a replay as they claimed tonight being the "biggest episode of Nitro in history", also boasting the Giant taking on Hollywood Hogan!

9:59PM - THIRD HOUR - 4.7

- The third hour fireworks went off.
COMMERCIAL - Juventud Guerrera def. Dean Malenko (10:34) This was bound to be a showstealer, as Juventud Guerrera had a lot of momentum going into this match with a former WCW World Cruiserweight Champion in his own right, Dean Malenko. Juvi wanted to get another win under his waist before Saturday's title showdown with Rey Mysterio Jr, as the "Man of 1,004 Holds" worked very quickly, on several occasions trying to trap Guerrera in submission holds, and work away at the back and the legs to slow down the luchadore and set him up for the Texas Cloverleaf later on. Juventud stayed on the offensive though, flying with headscissors everywhere, but when he went for a 450 splash, Malenko managed to get his knees up. The match continued until Malenko tried to go for the Cloverleaf and Juvi cradled Malenko, his foot on the ropes for the cheap win! Juventud Guerrera celebrated his win as Dean Malenko looked annoyed, but Guerrera had all of the momentum in the world going into WCW/nWo Souled Out this Saturday to face Rey Mysterio Jr! - An advertisement aired, promoting WCW/nWo Souled Out 98' this Saturday, live on pay-per-view. COMMERCIAL- Davey Boy Smith def. Chris Jericho (04:31) This was a big one for Chris Jericho, as he recently broke his losing streak on Thursday Thunder, but tonight he was bound to have a tough time against recent returnee, the British Bulldog. Bulldog powered him around, and when Jericho decided to go home, Ultimo Dragon was there waiting for him on the aisleway; and Dragon sent Jericho back into the ring! Davey made quick work of Jericho, the Running Powerslam getting him the win. Davey Boy Smith celebrated his win to cheers, as Ultimo Dragon had just avenged his loss last week at the hands of Chris Jericho! Ultimo seemed happy at Chris Jericho's temper tantrum in the ring, the British Bulldog victorious in this outing. - JJ Dillon meanwhile was at the rampway with Gene Okerlund, as Okerlund talked about Dillon making his weekly rounds of announcements; Dillon discussing the success of this three-hour Nitro, a sign of things to come for sure. He then announced several items for Souled Out this Saturday on pay-per-view; making Chris Benoit vs Diamond Dallas Page for the WCW US Heavyweight Championship official, and making a rematch for the Guerreros and the Steiner Brothers for the WCW World Tag Team Championships: but this time, if anybody came out to the ring, the Steiners would automatically retain their titles as a result of a disqualification! At that point, Chris Jericho ran up to Dillon, mispronouncing his name and asking him if he witnessed what just happened, a screwjob, a travesty! Dillon said he noticed, which is why this Saturday night, he gets Ultimo Dragon! Jericho thanked JJ a lot, repeatedly saying that he wouldn't let him down. COMMERCIAL- Michael Buffer did the ring introductions for the first of two main events; Hollywood Hogan vs the Giant. The Giant came to the ring, but out came Eric Bischoff in Hollywood Hogan's place!? - Eric Bischoff told the Giant to calm down as he joined him and Michael Buffer in the ring; the nWo President telling Giant that Hollywood Hogan wasn't here tonight due to a family emergency, but he did want Giant to know that that is a good thing for him, because there's no way he can be hurt for Saturday night's encounter with Kevin Nash! As Bischoff said that, out came Scott Norton, Vincent and Konnan through the crowd, trying to jump the Giant! Giant fought them off except from "Flash" Norton, as Kevin Nash and Scott Hall then hit the ring, looking for more chaos; the numbers game adding up; but instead out came Bret Hart! The "Hitman" thundered the ring, taking out Konnan with an inverted atomic drop; several clotheslines for Scott Norton, and when he went to lay a finger on Scott Hall, Hall and Nash bailed! Bret and Giant looked prepared for their individual matches at Souled Out, the Outsiders with Eric Bischoff on the aisle backing away; but this Saturday, there'd be nowhere to run for the nWo! COMMERCIAL- Gene Okerlund plugged WCW/nWo Souled Out for this Saturday night. The show will feature Sting defend the WCW World Heavyweight Championship against Randy Savage; Scott Hall face Bret Hart; The battle of the giants between Kevin Nash and the Giant; Diamond Dallas Page defending the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship against Chris Benoit; Buff Bagwell defend the WCW/nWo World Television Championship against Booker T; the Steiner Brothers defending the WCW World Tag Team Championships against the Guerreros; Ultimo Dragon challenging Chris Jericho; And Rey Mysterio Jr defending the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship against Juventud Guerrera. All, live on pay-per-view. - Michael Buffer, seemingly tired out did the ring introductions for our second main event, the tag team bout. - Randy Savage & Curt Hennig (w/Rick Rude) def. Sting & Ric Flair (13:29) This broke the streak of mediocre main events to Monday Nitro in past weeks, as this chaotic show was brought to a close by a classic drag-out tag team brawl, as Randy Savage and Sting went toe-to-toe five days prior to their Souled Out encounter, and former rivals, Ric Flair and Curt Hennig met once again in a gruelling chop battle at ringside. Flair was soon isolated and kept away from Sting, as Randy Savage and Curt Hennig worked away at the "Nature Boy", however after two failed attempts at a comeback, Flair came back crazy, and got the tag to Sting! The WCW World Heavyweight Champion cleared house, the Stinger Splash connecting to the Macho Man, and all hell broke loose. Flair got a blind tag and went at it with Hennig before slapping in the Figure-Four Leglock, but Hennig wasn't legal! Macho Man then came off of the top rope with the Diving Elbow on Flair, and got the win as Sting was laying a beating into Rick Rude! The crowd booed as Randy Savage slid out of the ring, a historic win against the returning Ric Flair tonight! Sting wasn't done though, as he challenged Savage to get into the ring, and he was about to; but thought against it! Savage was going crazy as the place was pandemonium; Monday Nitro going off the air!

10:57PM - END SHOW - 4.7

He was interrupted by Randy Savage, and a tag team match was made with Savage and Curt Hennig of the nWo facing Sting and Flair of WCW. It was a chaotic match, but Savage soon scored a cheap victory against the "Nature Boy". But this wasn't the end, as Sting stalked Savage away from the ring.
- The opening video package for WCW Thursday Thunder aired, and we cut to the live Von Braun Civic Center, where pyrotechnics went off.
- Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Lee Marshall welcomed us to Thursday Thunder, as they discussed Monday's three hour Nitro; a controversial and very packed out show in New Orleans. They promoted tonight, scheduled to feature Bret Hart in action with Kevin Nash in the main event!
- Scott Steiner def. Chavo Guerrero Jr (06:23) A WCW World Tag Team Championship match was made for Souled Out this past Monday night after the Guerreros got a huge upset win against the Steiner Brothers on Nitro. Scott showed Chavo who was boss, two days before their match, as Chavo tried to keep up with Scotty, working the shoulder, but Steiner was on a roll tonight, soon finishing Chavo off with Steiner Screwdriver! Scott Steiner celebrated his win to cheers, the official handing him his WCW World Tag Team Championship belt. But later tonight, we'll see how it goes when brother Rick Steiner faces Chavo Guerrero Jr's uncle, Eddie Guerrero! - The "WCW On the Road" vignette aired. - The theme of the New World Order hit to boos as out came Kevin Nash, tonight on his own it seemed! Nash carried his nWo World Tag Team Championship to the ring, as he seemed quite confident considering he had a match later tonight with Bret "Hitman" Hart. Nash got on the microphone and pulled out the survey, with the fans in Huntsville going crazy for the nWo. One more for the good guys. Nash continued, talking about how it's an interesting week, stating that the Giant wants to get his hands on him, but unfortunately he's going to have to wait until Souled Out this Saturday night, at which point he can't wait to drop Giant with the unthinkable Jackknife Powerbomb! Nash then discussed the Steiner Brothers, how he's really got them in a pickle, but really he wasn't there with Scott Hall to help the Guerreros; he knows that if the Guerreros won on Saturday night, then the Outsiders could just easily take their WCW World Tag Team Championships, and become the undisputed Tag Team Champions of the World! Nash discussed how tonight, he'll take pride in dismantling Bret Hart, who is way in over his head! Nash told Bret that he'd pay the price for turning down the nWo, because he'll suffer tonight against "Big Sexy", and will suffer on Saturday against the "Bad Guy"! COMMERCIAL- Damien & Silver King def. Super Calo & Ciclope (04:34) This was described as a 'lucha libre event' by Tony Schiavone, as these four Mexican luchadores went at it in an entertaining sequence, to the amusement of the capacity crowd in Huntsville. Damien and Silver King did some outstanding stuff against Ciclope and Super Calo, including a lot of flips and rolls, but in the end it was Silver King with the Silver Kick on Calo for the victory. The luchadores, Damien and Silver King celebrated their win to a mixed reaction from the Huntsville crowd, these stars gone international tonight on Thunder! - We went to the rampway with Gene Okerlund, as he introduced out the leader of the Flock, Raven. Raven came out to boos, accompanied by Sick Boy, Kidman, Hammer, Lodi, Riggs, Saturn and Chris Benoit. Okerlund wanted to get some insight on Raven's feud with Diamond Dallas Page, and where he currently stands with the "Canadian Crippler". Raven told Gene that it wasn't any of his business, but he is jealous of everything Diamond Dallas Page. He and DDP are so alike, and yet, he has everything Raven doesn't! And as for Benoit, he says nothing, he is a pawn in the Flock. And on Saturday night at Souled Out 98', Benoit will take Page's precious WCW United States Heavyweight Championship; and then lie down for Raven, who will take the title for himself, and for the Flock! The crowd booed, as Saturn's theme hit, getting ready for action. - An advertisement aired, promoting WCW/nWo Souled Out 98', live on pay-per-view this Saturday night. - Saturn (w/The Flock) def. Jim Duggan by disqualification (04:36) Jim Duggan was against great odds against Saturn with the Flock at ringside, but Duggan kept in there, giving Saturn a fight in this slugfest of a match. Duggan went for the Old Glory knee drop, but Saturn dodged it and then took Duggan down, working the arm of "Hacksaw". Soon, Duggan mounted a comeback when certain Flock members hopped onto the apron! Duggan took them out and then grabbed his trusty 2x4, clocking Saturn with it! The crowd cheered as "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan cleared house of Sick Boy, Lodi and Hammer before suddenly Marty Jannetty ran to the ring! Jannetty made his debut on WCW television by standing side-by-side with Duggan to oppose the Flock! Raven and Chris Benoit looked unsatisfied from ringside. COMMERCIAL - Ultimo Dragon def. Psychosis (08:14) An outstanding cruiserweight match for the crowd to enjoy, as Ultimo Dragon wanted to get some momentum in prior to his match against Chris Jericho this Saturday night at Souled Out. Psychosis proved to be a tough cookie to bite, as he took the fight to Dragon, even resorting to slowing down the pace of the match. Psychosis had Ultimo set up for the win at several points, but Ultimo always found a comeback method. Chris Jericho then came out to the aisleway, trying to distract Ultimo, but it didn't come out well, Ultimo locking in a Dragon Sleeper, and that was it! Ultimo Dragon celebrated his win to cheers, as Chris Jericho sarcastically applauded Ultimo, telling him that he'd be a victim to the Liontamer come Saturday at Souled Out! - An advertisement aired, promoting the Internet-exclusive pay-per-view coming up on January 31st; WCW Boston Brawl, live from the FleetCenter! It promoted big matches such as Hollywood Hogan facing Sting; Lex Luger facing Randy Savage; And Bret Hart teaming with Davey Boy Smith and the Giant to face Kevin Nash, Scott Hall and Scott Norton! - Bill Goldberg def. Disco Inferno (02:22) Disco Inferno seemed overconfident going into this as Bill Goldberg looked steaming, Disco trying a tactic such as stalling and taunting for the Huntsville crowd at ringside, but eventually Goldberg went out after him, and left Inferno mangled, all before Goldberg delivered a huge Spear off the ropes; and the Jackhammer wrapped things up! Bill Goldberg celebrated his win, no more dancing for Disco Inferno tonight!

9:03PM - SECOND HOUR - 3.7

- The second-hour pyrotechnics went off, as Tony Schiavone, Lee Marshall and Mike Tenay welcomed us to the second hour of Thursday Thunder! - Rey Mysterio Jr def. El Dandy in a non-title match (05:16) This was a back and forth match, as these two luchadores locked horns, the larger El Dandy working over Rey Mysterio Jr, but Mysterio soon managed to make a comeback, trying to do whatever he could to take Dandy by surprise, but Dandy would rarely budge against the WCW World Cruiserweight Champion. Mysterio managed to get Dandy down, eventually wrapping it up with a top rope hurricanrana! Rey Mysterio Jr celebrated his win with the WCW World Cruiserweight Champion, but will he still be holding the title following Souled Out when he faces Juventud Guerrera? COMMERCIAL- Gene Okerlund discussed what happened last Monday on Nitro, as Eric Bischoff decided to organise a match between Larry Zbyszko and himself, in a rematch from Starrcade, for power of Nitro; next Monday night! But that wasn't where it ended, as Louie Spicolli joined the nWo, attacking Zbyszko as the first hour drew to a close. Gene welcomed out Spicolli, as he was booed. Spicolli was asked why he joined the nWo, and Louie talked about how Scott Hall approached him with the proposal, saying he saw potential in him. So he's doing the nWo some good, and he stands by what he did! Next Monday night, we'd see a new leadership take over Nitro when Eric Bischoff beats that grizzly old freak, Larry Zbyszko! - Mike Enos & Wayne Bloom def. The Public Enemy (04:40) This was the in-ring return of Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom, as the former partners mixed it up with one of the more pop culture favourite tag teams in WCW, Rocco Rock and Johnny Grunge of the Public Enemy. Bloom and Enos worked well together, working away at Rock and keeping him from Grunge, but Grunge soon got the tag. He cleared house, but quickly found trouble as Enos and Bloom delivered a double flapjack to Grunge, securing the victory. Mike Enos and Wayne Bloom celebrated their win to boos, these two men possibly coming to have an effect over the tag team division here in World Championship Wrestling. - The WCW Bruise Cruise advertisement aired. COMMERCIAL- Wrath (w/James Vandenburg) def. Ernest Miller (04:26) Ernest Miller made the challenge to Wrath this past weekend on Saturday Night, these two having appeared on opposing sides of a feud involving Wrath and Mortis & Ernest Miller and Glacier. Miller tried to use his educated feet, but Wrath dominated, eventually connecting with the Total Meltdown giving the big man the victory. Wrath celebrated his win, James Vandenburg then joining him in the ring as he continued to stomp away at poor Ernest Miller! - We went to a replay from earlier tonight, as it was Scott Steiner scoring a victory against Chavo Guerrero Jr in one-half of the WCW World Tag Team Championship match set up for this Saturday at WCW/nWo Souled Out! This set up the following match, as Eddie Guerrero challenges Rick Steiner. - Eddie Guerrero def. Rick Steiner (06:38) This was the other half of the match we saw earlier tonight, these two will be on opposing sides this Saturday at Souled Out for the WCW World Tag Team Championships. Eddie stuck in there better than Chavo Guerrero Jr earlier tonight, managing to go after the knee of the larger Rick Steiner. Steiner still managed to get in offense, the middle rope bulldog connecting, but Guerrero got his foot onto the bottom rope. Guerrero and Steiner continued to go at it until Chavo snuck down to ringside and tripped Rick without the official seeing, trapping Steiner's feet as Guerrero was up top and he nailed the Frog Splash getting the win! Eddie Guerrero celebrated his win with Chavo Guerrero Jr, as the Guerreros were possibly well on their way to claiming the WCW World Tag Team Championships this weekend at Souled Out! - Kevin Nash def. Bret Hart by disqualification (09:24) These two have had a series of interesting matches in the past, and they met here, as "Big Sexy" seemed so content on trying to put Bret Hart away early on, before proceeding to dismantle the "Hitman" as the match continued. Bret was worked over, but refused to give up as always, getting in several shots on the larger Kevin Nash. Nash choked Bret in the corner with the boot, but Nash soon paid for it, Bret going after the leg and working away at the leg as well! Bret seemed to be thinking about applying the Sharpshooter, Nash avoiding it at all costs. Hart continued to trade blows with Nash until Nash decided to leave, rolling out of the ring! Bret seemed angry, but that's when the Giant came from behind, attacking Nash! The fans roared as the Giant had Kevin Nash by the throat, revenge for Monday on Nitro! Bret Hart joined in as Nash was brought to the ring, although that's where Scott Hall suddenly jumped Bret with a steel chair to the spine! Hall and Nash fought with Hart and Giant, as WCW Thursday Thunder was rushed off the air!

10PM - END SHOW - 3.65

THE BRIT REPORT Presented by Matt Burke on Friday 23rd January 1998
-- You can see my review of WCW Monday Nitro here.
-- World Championship Wrestling has terminated the contracts of The Renegade, Jacqueline and Debra McMichael. The Renegade's release was confusing, due to him being on Nitro this past Monday night. Meanwhile, Jacqueline has been doing nothing since Stevie Ray of Harlem Heat was injured, and was thus let go. Debra McMichael hasn't been seen since World War 3.
-- Hollywood Hogan's absence from Monday Nitro was actually due to having flight delays due to snow. Hogan was in New York for media duties over the weekend.
-- Jim Neidhart has been signed to a contract officially. In addition, Wayne Bloom and Mike Enos made their WCW returns tonight on Thunder.
-- WCW Monday Nitro got a 4.7 this past week. This is 0.1 down from last week. Meanwhile, WWF's RAW is WAR's surprised many, receiving a 4.1. This is a high rise in comparison to RAW's 3.4 last week. It is probable that this was down to the segment including boxing legend, Mike Tyson in which he was confronted by Steve Austin. It will be interesting to see how the wars go from here.
-- WCW Thursday Thunder last night managed to maintain a 3.65 rating. It will be interesting to see how well it does in the upcoming weeks.

A solid, unique match up to kick off Thunder. Scott Steiner with the victory over Chavo is fine to further build the WCW Tag Team Championship match for Souled Out. Can't see Rick winning over Eddie later on, though. Not a bad promo from Nash. I do see the Jackknife botch coming when he meets the Giant. Not much to comment on the Lucha Libre Event other than that it sounded like a fun, entertaining match. Interesting promo from the Flock. I imagine Benoit and DDP will put on quite the United States Championship match at Souled Out. A solid win for Ultimo Dragon, building the momentum going into Saturday night against Chris Jericho. Poor Disco. Looking forward to the continuation of Goldberg's path of destruction, and if it will lead him into super stardom. Good win for Rey Mysterio to kick off the second hour of the broadcast. I imagine he'll be retaining on Saturday. I vaguely remember Wayne and Enos, though from I what I can recall, I think they'll be able to hang fairly nicely in the tag team division. Always had a soft spot for Ernest Miller, though I'm not at all upset with Wrath's victory over him. As expected, Eddie gets the win over Rick to even the momentum heading into the WCW Tag Team Championship match. Wasn't the Steiner breakup around this point in time? Lastly, great main event with Nash and Hart. The DQ finish was expected to keep everyone looking good going into Souled Out. Overall, a solid go home show for Souled Out. The card looks very nice, too.

Sorry I don't know a whole lot about WCW. A Sting/Savage match should be really great, and having Savage beat Luger was a nice way of having him build up momentum. Savage may not be as big a threat to Sting as Hogan, but there will be enough tension to produce a good match. I like how the nWo is still portrayed as relevant heels even though Hogan isn't in the title picture right now. I'm guessing you were always a WCW junkie.

Read through and will give some general comments on the shows. First off I'll say that you've really captured the period well and give a good feeling to the shows, they are really well written. I particularly like the character of Eric Bischoff that you've portrayed. The Benoit/Flock/DDP stuff is brilliant and probably my favourite part of the show. On the negative side of things I'm not too thrilled at The Guerreros challenging for the tag titles, I think they both (in particular Eddie) have more to offer as singles guys in this period either in the Cruiserweight or US title pictures. But really the positives far outweigh the negatives here, I love how you seem to be using a majority of the huge roster in one way or another, hopefully though you get Goldberg into a feud sooner rather than later. Anyway this is top notch stuff, keep it up.

| WCW/nWo Souled Out: Saturday 24th January 1998 |

The Hara Arena - Dayton, OH (5,486)

poster by kemp.
We were welcomed to the first pay-per-view of the WCW calendar year by viewing a video package, promoting three of the matches scheduled for tonight's broadcast; Randy Savage against Sting for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship; Scott Hall facing Bret Hart; And Kevin Nash meeting The Giant. A recurring theme, for tonight was once again all about World Championship Wrestling in their rivalry with the New World Order. We cut to the sold out Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio where pyrotechnics went off. Tony Schiavone, Dusty Rhodes and Bobby Heenan welcomed us to Snickers' Souled Out 98', talking about the card tonight and how important it is in the WCW/nWo bloodfeud!1) WCW World Cruiserweight Championship: Rey Mysterio Jr (c) vs Juventud Guerrera | A competitive opening contest to say the least, as these two luchadores were here to do two things: energize the already energetic crowd here tonight in Dayton, Ohio; and to prove to the other man that they were better, and worthy of the WCW World Cruiserweight Championship at stake. Juventud Guerrera got quite a reaction out of the crowd as he chose to go with the route of something very different than what we were accustomed to expect; Juvi decided to throw out the high-flying, fast-paced moveset for a slender, slow-paced mat-focused encounter. Rey Mysterio Jr had the upper hand early on, managing to better Juvi in speed and agility, but Guerrera managed to catch Rey off the top with a springboard, nailing him in the mouth with a dropkick. Rey bled slightly from the mouth, the result of a busted lip, as Juvi went right to work on it, wearing Rey's knee down. Juvi continued as he experimented his attack, once again speeding up the pace against the champ. Rey was weakened and tame from the attacks to the knee made by the challenger, and was unable to capitalize in comebacks to Juventud's impressive array of hurricanranas and armdrags and dropkicks. Guerrera soon thought to go up for the 450 Splash, but Rey managed to get his knees up and mount a comeback, a tornado DDT turned into an armbar, as well as a spinning headscissors designed to daze the challenger. Rey got enough momentum going that he seemed to be going up to the top rope for the diving hurricanrana, but Guerrera nipped up to the top as well, connecting with a Super Juvi Driver! Guerrera covered, but Rey managed to get his foot onto the bottom rope. Juvi was frustrated and nailed Rey with a scoop slam, then going up for a second 450 splash. But this time, Guerrera got nothing but mat, as Mysterio slowly slid out onto the apron, nailing a springboard hurricanrana for the victory! |

Winner and still WCW World Cruiserweight Champion: Rey Mysterio Jr (09:42) [***]

The crowd applauded as Rey Mysterio Jr slowly got up, favouring his right knee whilst the referee raised Rey's arm in victory, offering him his well-earned WCW World Cruiserweight Championship. The fans in Dayton appreciated the hot opening contest to what should be an exciting night in the history of this sport, when suddenly Rey was approached by Juventud Guerrera; once rivals, Rey happily accepted, the two luchadores embracing in a hug before leaving.
We cut to the entrance way as Gene Okerlund was standing by, Gene commenting on the great sportsmanship displayed moments ago by the two young men, Rey Mysterio Jr and Juventud Guerrera. Gene then compared this to Kevin Nash and the Giant's relationship, taking us back to a replay from Starrcade last month, where Nash no-showed the match that was meant to happen; and instead Giant found Scott Hall, not "Big Sexy" himself. Okerlund vowed that tonight we would see which was the better giant in this company; the master of the Jackknife, or the ruler of the Chokeslam!2) WCW World Tag Team Championships: The Steiner Brothers (w/Ted Dibiase) (c) vs The Guerreros | This match was set up earlier this week after shock hit the WCW World Tag Team Championship division, for newcomer tag team consisting of Eddie Guerrero, and his nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr managed to score a non-title victory over Rick and Scott, the legendary Steiner Brothers. Although this went not without controversy, as it came with the assistance of the self-proclaimed nWo World Tag Team Champions, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall of the nWo. Tonight, Eddie and Chavo were determined to take the titles, but Scott wouldn't allow that as the match first began, clearing house of Chavo, as well as Eddie, with lefts, rights, Steinerlines and shoulder tackles. Scott then did something he hasn't done much recently, and tagged in brother Rick, who did quite a good task in scaring Chavo with the various headbutts of doom. The "Dog-Faced Gremlin" had the fans in the palm of his hands, further going to work on Chavo, but it soon came to a stop as Chavo sent Rick into the Guerreros' corner with a hurricanrana, Eddie and Chavo then proceeding to stomp a mudhole in Rick in the corner. Chavo then whipped Eddie into the corner with a leg lariat, uncle and nephew rejoicing in arrogance. Eddie continued to stomp away at Rick when he was down, going at the spine of the larger man. Uncle Eddie applied some sort of bow and arrow, although he wasn't able to get the larger Rick Steiner up for it properly. And so as a perfect substitute, Eddie simply applied a semi-Mexican surfboard, applying a facelock rather than getting Rick properly up for it. Rick remained still for several moments, struggling, but soon Eddie released the hold and in came Chavo. This strategy continued until Chavo dropped the ball, Chavo going for the enzuigiri and Rick ducked it! Rick made a comeback with several clotheslines and got the tag to Scotty, who cleared house once again, taking out Chavo and Eddie with Steinerlines, and soon all four men were in the ring! Eddie and Rick went at it, as Eddie sent Rick outside, but meanwhile Chavo went for a suplex, reversed into the Steiner Screwdriver! Scott got the cover, and that was all! |

Winners and still WCW World Tag Team Champions: The Steiner Brothers (11:17) [**1/2]

The crowd cheered as Scott Steiner celebrated his win in the ring, taking his own WCW World Tag Team Championship from the referee and seemingly celebrating more individually to Rick Steiner and Ted Dibiase. But stranger things went on as Eddie Guerrero slid into the ring and shook his head in great disapproval at nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr failing to get the win in the best opportunity. Eddie left for the back without his nephew.
We went to outside of the Hara Arena in Dayton as two limousines arrived here at Souled Out 98', much like the series premiere of Thursday Thunder several weeks ago; and out stepped Hollywood Hogan, Kevin Nash, Eric Bischoff and Curt Hennig in one, and Randy Savage, Scott Hall, Elizabeth and Konnan in the other. The two sides of the nWo met in the middle, as Hollywood Hogan apologized for no-showing last Monday night. He talked about how tonight, the nWo would dominate, whether there were problems with the two sides or not. They cannot afford to lose tonight!3) Chris Jericho vs Ultimo Dragon | This feud came about several weeks ago, as Chris Jericho was in the midst of a huge losing streak, losing to stars such as Curt Hennig and Booker T before in what he claims, "the fans turned their backs on him". Jericho had several temper tantrums, and started coming to ringside talking on the microphone how change was coming. This resulted in Ultimo Dragon losing a match to Kidman, and thus the two started costing each other their matches on a weekly basis! Ultimo Dragon managed to outsmart Jericho quite a lot in this match, using several mat-based sequences, then coming out of nowhere with a stiff array of kicks. Jericho soon managed to put his speed to the test, however, firing back with some dropkicks and hurricanranas of his own. The "Lionheart"s bad side got to him as he started getting overconfident and taunted the capacity crowd in Dayton, whilst laying several chops to Ultimo. Luckily, Ultimo rolled out of the way of one and left Jericho dazed in the corner with a huge enzuigiri. Jericho continued to be battered by the Dragon with kicks and forearms, Dragon soon letting himself down by trying an Asai moonsault to a fatigued Jericho at ringside, but Jericho managed to move! Jericho slapped Ultimo around and chopped him before going after the back, a double-underhook backbreaker almost getting Jericho the win, but once again Jericho spent too much time arguing with the crowd, and Ultimo nearly got him in the Dragon sleeper, just for Jericho to slip out and go for the Liontamer; Ultimo turning it into a cradle, followed by a giant enzuigiri from the Dragon! Ultimo soon set Jericho up for a top-rope hurricanrana; but Jericho reversed it in mid-air! Ultimo landed in the Liontamer, and Jericho seemingly wasn't about to let go anytime soon! Ultimo struggled, but he knew he couldn't handle it and tapped out! |

Winner: Chris Jericho (08:44) [**1/2]

Chris Jericho celebrated his win to boos, but he wasn't done there, as Jericho then shoved the official aside and locked in the Liontamer again! The referee managed to get in the way of it, but he still wasn't done! Jericho picked Ultimo up and tossed him to ringside before following him out and picking up the ring steps! Jericho slammed them over the spine of Ultimo, and the Dragon was down! Jericho applied the Liontamer again for good measure, several referees and paramedics scraping Jericho off and aiding to Ultimo.
We cut to the backstage area where Lee Marshall had reportedly been granted permission to enter the Flock's dressing room here in the Hara Arena. Marshall entered the room as the camera followed him, walking past Saturn and Sick Boy to the right of the room, Lodi sitting on the floor writing a new sign for tonight, Kidman talking to Hammer and Riggs to the left, and Raven sat on a deck chair talking to Chris Benoit; who was getting ready for his match tonight. Lee asked Benoit about his thoughts going into tonight's WCW US Heavyweight Championship match. Benoit didn't look up as Raven replied, talking about how Benoit was beginning to learn the way of the Flock. Benoit will win tonight, because he knows what the consequences will be if he loses. Benoit had to join the Flock due to losing. And with that, we will now see the true uprising that we didn't see from Chris in the Four Horsement, or as a WCW advocate for survival. Tonight, Diamond Dallas Page will know how it feels, too. And when he's at his lowest, they'll drag him down to the Bowery too.
We went to a replay from Thursday Thunder three weeks ago, as Booker T fought Buff Bagwell to a fifteen minute time limit for the WCW World Television Championship; coming within seconds of claiming the title. Buff refused Booker of a rematch, until tonight. It's Bagwell vs Booker II, this time with no time limit draws!4) WCW World Television Championship: Buff Bagwell (c) vs Booker T |

These two had what could have been a classic several weeks ago on Thursday Thunder, but this was all about retribution, and no escape for the WCW World Television Champion, Buff Bagwell. "The Stuff" seemed intimidated by Booker T as the match began, Booker really going to town on Bagwell in this time limitless match, catching the champ off-guard with various axe kicks, clotheslines and dropkicks. Eventually though, Bagwell decided to make a run for it, leaving the ring for a breather. The crowd booed as Bagwell took some time to regain his composure, before re-entering the match just to get laid out by a huge superkick from the challenger! Booker covered, but Bagwell kicked out at two somehow. Booker went to follow up, but Bagwell managed to sent Booker guillotined into the ropes, following up by choking Booker across the second rope! Bagwell went after the neck from this point, dropping a running leg across the back of Booker's head, guillotining him once again in the ropes. Bagwell seemed cocky as he strutted off his impressive physique, before going back to work on Booker with a neckbreaker connecting. Bagwell continued his cheap work of Booker, stomping away at him and keeping him down, then applying a front facelock and delivering several knees to the cranium of the challenger, Buff doing all of this with the most arrogant of smirks on his face. Booker soon managed to make a comeback, delivering a sidewalk slam and soon going up for the Harlem Hangover; but Bagwell simply rolled out to the floor! The crowd booed as Bagwell slowly made his way up the aisleway, the referee counting the champ out, meaning that he would retain the title! But Booker wouldn't allow it, grabbing Bagwell and dragging him to ringside, then tossing Bagwell right into the ring steps! Booker returned to the ring as Bagwell crawled around ringside for a breather, Booker then going out to ringside, and unbeknownst to the referee, Bagwell clocked Booker with the WCW World Television Championship! The crowd booed as Bagwell dragged Booker back into the ring, covering him for a two count! Bagwell was irate as he continued the beatdown, several shots to the head of Booker connecting. Bagwell then decided to go up top for the Buff Blockbuster; but Booker was playing possum and ran up, a belly-to-belly suplex connecting from the top! Booker was slow to make the cover, but he managed it and just to get another two count! The crowd were enjoying this as Booker slid onto the apron and mounted the top rope, connecting with the missile dropkick - but Bagwell shoved the referee in the way! The official down, Bagwell blatantly low blowed Booker and nailed him with another neckbreaker before leaving the ring and taking his title. Down to ringside came Konnan of the nWo, as he slid into the ring and began to help Bagwell stomp away at the challenger, defenseless on the canvas! But that brought out big Stevie Ray, a man we haven't seen in over a month, and he ran down to the ring and cleared house of Konnan, the two brawling to the back, as the referee began to stir. Bagwell went to get his title belt, but as he did, Booker went for another axe kick, but Bagwell ducked it and leveled Booker with the belt in front of the official!

Winner by disqualification: Booker T, still WCW World Television Champion: Buff Bagwell (16:23) [**3/4]

The crowd booed in disappointment as Buff Bagwell quickly rolled out of the ring with the WCW World Television Championship clutched to his waist. Bagwell left to boos as the still groggy referee aided to Booker T clutching his neck in the ring. Another great match that Bagwell has somehow managed to sly his way out of!
We went up to Gene Okerlund as Okerlund was passed by Buff Bagwell on the aisleway. Okerlund talked about what a great match that was up until the end, where once again it looked like Booker T had the WCW World Television Champion's number. Gene continued to talk about what a great pay-per-view extravaganza we had on tonight in Dayton, but that's when the WCW President, JJ Dillon returned to the show! Dillon cut Gene off unexpectedly, talking about how Booker should be applauded for his work tonight, and Bagwell should be reprimanded for his heinous method to retaining the title; which is why tomorrow night on Nitro, Bagwell will defend the WCW World Television Championship one more time against Booker T! And if Bagwell got himself counted out or disqualified, we'd crown a new champion anyway! Dillon left as the fans in the Hara Arena applauded.5) Bill Goldberg vs Brad Armstrong | This was an unadvertised bonus match to the WCW/nWo Souled Out 98' broadcast, live on pay-per-view. Goldberg came out to a fiery ovation, taking on one of WCW's veteran cruiserweights, Brad Armstrong of the famous Armstrong wrestling family. Armstrong tried to get in there with a fight with the man they call Goldberg, but Bill simply sweeped the floor with the poor little guy, a mule kick almost taking his head off and a gorilla press slam almost sending him halfway across the ring! Goldberg soon signalled for the Spear, and it connected! He felt the rush of the crowd and got Armstrong up for the Jackhammer, hammering Brad into the canvas for the victory! |

Winner: Bill Goldberg (01:25) [DUD]

Bill Goldberg celebrated his win, another victory racked up to Goldberg's evergrowing undefeated streak hitlist. Goldberg, once again impressive in the fired up Hara Arena in Dayton, Ohio.
We went to the announce table where Tony Schiavone, Dusty Rhodes and Mike Tenay were discussing the situation with Diamond Dallas Page, Chris Benoit and the Flock. They ran down the events, with Benoit being the one with beef with Raven and the Flock originally, losing to Saturn last month at Starrcade 97', with thanks from Raven and the Flock. From there, Benoit vowed to hunt down Raven, defeating Flock members Kidman and Sick Boy on television, until being derailed by Saturn on Nitro two weeks ago. The stipulation had it that he had to join the Flock, and so he did. He was then cost a match on Thursday Thunder nine days ago by Raven, and the ruthless leader ordered a leather strap whipping on Benoit from the entire faction. But it was Diamond Dallas Page who came to the rescue, just for Benoit to take him out! And now, Benoit under Raven's tutelage, was going to challenge for DDP's WCW US Heavyweight Championship!6) WCW United States Heavyweight Championship: Diamond Dallas Page (c) vs Chris Benoit (w/The Flock | This was a more dramatic match in comparison to the others, as unlike the prior bouts, this was going to be more of a pull-apart, drag-out slugfest between two of the perfect all-rounders in World Championship Wrestling. Diamond Dallas Page was in the mood as he arrived in Dayton via the crowd in the Hara Arena, but just as the bell rang, he found the ring surrounded by Flock members. Kidman tried to get on the apron and DDP swung for him, allowing Benoit to get a head start to boos, delivering several chops to the WCW US Heavyweight Champion in the early goings. Benoit sent Page into the turnbuckle but Page jumped backwards over the "Canadian Crippler" and delivered several snap jabs, unable to follow up with the discus clothesline, as Benoit suddenly went after Page from behind, a Saito suplex taking the champion down hard! Benoit continued the attack on Dallas Page with several stomps delivered to the taped abdomen of the former street fighter, DDP. DDP kept in his fighting spirit however, the same that recently took on all comers from Curt Hennig to Konnan, and now to Chris Benoit as Dallas Page delivered an inverted atomic drop, clotheslining Benoit down to the mat, then picking him up and nailing him with a second one for good measures! Page played to the capacity crowd as he sucker punched Benoit once or twice, the "Canadian Crippler" however came back with hard punches of his own, even chops, and this was turning nasty very quickly as Benoit suddenly picked Page up and dropped him with a chestbreaker, soon applying the cross-armbreaker with great agility! Raven looked on with the blank expression on his face that he always wore, watching Benoit try to make Page tap in the cross-armbreaker. Luckily, Page managed to slowly but surely make a comeback; slowly picking up and dropping Benoit in a single-handed powerbomb style move! Page then charged at Chris in the corner, but the challenger wisely rolled out of the way, Page's bad shoulder going straight into the ring post! Page collapsed to the floor as this didn't look good for the valiant, fighting WCW United States Heavyweight Champion. Raven then got on the apron and distracted the referee as Saturn delivered a T-bone suplex on DDP on the ring mats outside of the ring! The crowd booed as the Flock had their way with Page, Benoit then leaving the ring and slamming Page's shoulder over the guard rails at ringside. Benoit continued to wrench at the arm until he decided to break the count, then sending Dallas Page shoulder-first into the ring post! The challenger rolled the champion into the ring and once again went after the arm, this time some sort of abdominal stretch occurring, Benoit just hyperextending the arm in the wrong direction. Page got Dayton, Ohio cheering him on, as Page slowly began to slip out of it, and he did, several haymakers to Benoit before connecting with a belly-to-belly suplex! Page set up for the Diamond Clash, but Benoit ducked out of it, delivering several joined up German suplexes! Benoit then delivered a release German, covering just for Dallas Page to kick out at two! Benoit seemed content to get it all over with, as he scoop slammed DDP and climbed up to the top for the Diving Headbutt, but Page managed to get up and crotch Benoit up there! Page then somehow managed to nail the Diamond Cutter on Benoit on the top rope, covering Benoit, just for Lodi to get on the apron! Page sent Lodi flying off the apron with his good arm, then taking down Hammer and Kidman as well, but Benoit came from behind with the Crippler Crossface! The fans booed, anticipating a new champion, but hoped that DDP would somehow find an escape to the unforgiving hold, but Page was trapped, but after about thirty seconds of struggling for the ropes, Page pulled back and rolled Benoit up, scoring the victory! |

Winner and still WCW United States Heavyweight Champion: Diamond Dallas Page (20:11) [***1/2]

Diamond Dallas Page remained down as Chris Benoit looked shocked! The "Canadian Crippler" almost had the win, but DDP had outsmarted the master of technical wrestling! Benoit went for the Crippler Crossface after the bell, but Page made a comeback, managing to blast Benoit with a Diamond Cutter! The fans cheered but that all stopped when Raven got in the ring and delivered the Evenflow DDT to the WCW US Heavyweight Champion! The crowd hissed, Raven extending his arms whilst Kidman went up and nailed the Shooting Star Press! The Flock left, carrying Benoit out as if he was victorious.
Gene Okerlund talked about how the upcoming three matches were the main events everybody has been talking about in upcoming weeks. But firstly, he wanted to bring out someone we haven't seen in quite some time: Rowdy Roddy Piper! Piper made his way out to a great ovation from the Dayton crowd wearing a kilt and all. Gene welcomed the Rowdy one to Souled Out as he mentioned the last time we saw Piper in World Championship Wrestling, he lost to Hollywood Hogan in the steel cage at Halloween Havoc. Piper talked about how he may have dropped the ball on that night, but the reason that he is here tonight, is to make sure there is no politics within the WCW World Heavyweight Championship main event. No nWo, no WCW, just Sting and Randy Savage! But he wants to make one thing clear: he's going to be the special guest enforcer, and he's going to ensure nobody gets in the way of tonight's title confrontation! Piper left as the fans cheered.7) The Giant vs Kevin Nash | This was expected to be nothing pretty, and pretty it wasn't. The Giant has waited a handful of months to finally get his hands on "Big Sexy", but Nash continued to run. But here we are, the Hara Arena on January 24th 1998; the encounter. The Giant started off on the offense, pounding away at Nash with several lefts and rights, managing to back him into a corner and slap him hard across the chest with his bear-like hand. Nash soon decided to go into hiding, rolling out of the ring in order to take a breather from the big man. But that's when Giant came after him, ready to carry on the assault on Nash, just for the nWo member to send him right into the guard rail. Nash pinpointed the ribs of the Giant and went after them, several abdominal shots to the big man. Nash rolled the seven-footer back into the ring and tried to keep him down off of his feet at all times, even busting out a front dropkick at one point, taking down the Giant, who was on his knees. Nash locked in an abdominal stretch and continued to cheat, grabbing the middle rope whenever he could, whilst the official was out of position and not noticing. But soon the referee finally noticed, and the Giant delivered a big hiptoss to Nash immediately! Giant decided that he wasn't going to take anymore, several headbutts, clotheslines and a big back body drop delivered to the nWo founder! Giant decided to end it now, rising his hand into the air for the big Chokeslam, but as he did it, Nash managed to kick him in the bad abdomen, and Nash went for the Jackknife Powerbomb, Giant wisely dropping to his knees instead! Nash axe handled him in the back a few times, but that's when Giant shoved Nash away and gave him a big sidewalk slam! Giant once again signaled for the Chokeslam, but Nash broke off from it and went up to the top rope, but once again Giant caught him with the choke grip, going for the Chokeslam again, Nash with a low blow finding a way out of it! |

Winner by disqualification: The Giant (08:24) [*3/4]

The crowd booed in disgust as Kevin Nash had just cheaped his way out of another one, getting himself disqualified just to avoid taking the Chokeslam from the Giant! Nash went for the Powerbomb after the bell, but Giant back body dropped him again, Nash sliding out under the ropes! "Big Sexy" made a power walk for the backstage area, as Giant was in hot pursuit, steaming at how Nash had gotten away from him again!
We went to Tony Schiavone, Dusty Rhodes and Bobby Heenan on commentary, as they narrated the last two hours of this pay-per-view broadcast, WCW/nWo Souled Out 98'. They then promoted the next time we'd be live on pay-per-view, for WCW Superbrawl VIII. The pay-per-view will be live on February 22nd 1998 from the Cow Palace in San Francisco, California. Suddenly, the theme of Voodoo Child hit, and we went to the entranceway.
Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff strutted out to the ring to loud boos, as Hogan wasn't even scheduled to be here tonight, not having a match or anything. Hogan and Bischoff continued to walk to the ring as Bischoff took a microphone, welcoming Dayton to the honcho of the New World Order, Hollywood Hogan! Hogan grew more boos as he took the microphone and began to talk about how he's the biggest name that the nWo have and yet he's not even scheduled to be here! But nevertheless, he's here to ensure that the WCW World Heavyweight Champion goes onto the right hands, and those right hands belong to the Macho Man Randy Savage, in the New World Order! Hogan talked about how Rowdy Roddy Piper wants to get in the nWo's way of ensuring that, but he has good faith that Savage will get the job done against that stupid Batman ripoff, Sting. And when that happens, he'd like to offer a challenge to the future champion Savage, for tomorrow night on Monday Nitro! "Sorry pal, it's only business!". Hogan left, as the announcers talked about how smug Hogan seemed, and how the controversial challenge may effect order in the New World Order even more!8) Scott Hall (w/Louie Spicolli) vs Bret Hart | This match all came about when Bret Hart joined World Championship Wrestling in December on Monday Nitro, seemingly neutral between the fighting WCW and nWo camps trying to recruit the "Hitman" to their respective brand. It was then confirmed that Bret was strictly a WCW guy when he helped Sting from being screwed over against Hollywood Hogan back at Starrcade, and since then the New World Order; Scott Hall in particular has not taken kindly towards the veteran. Hall came to the ring with his new trusty lackey in the nWo, Louie Spicolli, who seemed quite nervous to be in Hall's corner against someone of the "Hitman"s caliber. Bret and Scott locked up, Bret managing to take Hall down with an armdrag, Bret managing to get the comeuppance on the "Bad Guy", Scott not liking it one bit and growing more and more frustrated. Hall and Hart continued to hook up and chain-wrestle, just for Bret to once again outmaneuver the nWo star. Bret managed to take Hall down and work away at the back, managing to plant him with a big backbreaker. But as Bret followed up on it, Scott unfortunately dodged a diving elbow from Hart, causing Bret to seemingly harm his arm. Scott went to work on the arm, stomping away at Bret when he was down and continued to twist the weakened arm of the "Hitman". Scott took Bret out and wrapped his arm around the ring post, repeatedly swinging it in; then mocking Bret and applying his ring-post sharpshooter, except using Bret's arms for leverage instead of the legs! Bret was in pain as Hall continued to force him around and mock him, stomping away at Bret's arm and applying an armbar. Bret was locked in it as the crowd rallied on to help the "Excellence of Execution" pull out all of the stops to avoid it and hopefully win in his WCW pay-per-view debut tonight. Bret managed to find a way out of it, almost scoring the win with the crucifix rollup, but Hall kicked out and went right back after the arm of the "Hitman", applying another armbar. Bret soon had enough energy to get up, delivering a second backbreaker to Hall. Bret mounted a comeback, delivering several clotheslines in addition, and from there Hart went for the spine of Scott, managing to deliver several suplexes and once again go back to outwrestling the taller Hall. Bret's arm soon played part in the self-destruction of the "Hitman" though, Bret going for a Piledriver just for his arm to be unhelpful in lifting Scott up. Hall went right after it, managing to take down the hero as well. Hall nailed the fallaway slam and seemed ready to go for the Outsider's Edge, but as he got Bret up, he managed to slip out and get Hall in a backslide, Louie Spicolli helping Hall out of the pinfall and out of the ring! Spicolli talked strategy to Bret, but the "Hitman" rolled out after them, a clothesline taking both nWo members down! Bret sent Spicolli over the guard rail into the first row, but when he turned back, Hall poked him in the eye! Hall then nailed a bulldog once the two were back in the ring, and again signaled for the Outsider's Edge; this time it connected! Hall covered, but Bret somehow managed t get out at two. Hall was trapped in disbelief, as he stomped away at Bret and got ready to prepare Hart for a third Outsider's Edge, but again Bret slipped out, bouncing off the ropes and nailing a clothesline taking both men down! The official counted both men out, but Bret got up as did Hall, and Scott swung for Bret! The "Hitman" caught Hall with the inverted atomic drop, Hall bouncing off; and just like that Bret applied the Sharpshooter! Hall struggled like hell, but he finally tapped out! |

Winner: Bret Hart (18:23) [***]

The crowd cheered loudly as Bret Hart dropped the hold and collapsed to the canvas, the "Hitman"s arm raised in victory as Scott Hall clutched his spine, having being wrenched whilst locked in the Sharpshooter. But when the "Hitman" tried to reach his feet, he was blindsighted by Louie Spicolli, who proceeded to stomp at him to a chorus of boos! Spicolli nailed Bret with the Spicolli Driver, but that's where it ended when out ran the British Bulldog! Davey Boy Smith hit the ring and clotheslined Spicolli over the top rope to join Scott Hall, and Davey aided to Bret, the fans cheering to show their appreciation for the "Best There Is, the Best There Was, and the Best There Ever Will Be".
Tony Schiavone, Dusty Rhodes and Bobby Heenan discussed what they had just seen, then moving on to talk about the upcoming match - our main event between two men driven by different destinies: Sting vs Randy Savage for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. A video package aired, reviewing the last few weeks of television that brought us to this match: that Randy Savage was chosen as the number one contender by WCW President, JJ Dillon. It was perhaps done to spite rivalling nWo hothead, Hollywood Hogan; someone with a checkered history against Savage. The tension brought the nWo down several notches as Hogan and Savage expressed frustration towards each other, until deciding to come to terms: if Savage won against Sting, Hogan would be the "Macho Man"s first opponent for the title. Sting managed to play mindgames with Savage and his quick wit and paranoia, but tonight may be a different story!
Michael Buffer was in the ring as we returned to the Hara Arena, doing the introductions and hyping up our main event, coming up in several moments.9) WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Sting (c) vs Randy Savage Special Guest Enforcer: Roddy Piper | These two greats of professional wrestling wrestling were ready to go at it with one another, competing over the most prestigious prize in our industry, the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Earlier tonight "Rowdy" Roddy Piper made his return to World Championship Wrestling, pledging that he would be at ringside to ensure that there was no outside interference from the New World Order, or anyone from the locker rooms for that matter; in order to avoid the fate of Starrcade 97's controversial events. Randy Savage started off with his unorthodox style, taking Sting right down with a hip toss, and "Macho Man" seemed very confident, he sent Elizabeth back to the locker room on his way out to ensure she didn't have any part in Sting's potential mind games. Savage had the upperhand as this five-thousand strong Hara Arena in Dayton routed for Sting to make the comeback, Savage working away at Sting endlessly, several neckbreakers connecting, as the "Macho Man" was really making a good go of it in this match against the mysterious man they call Sting. Savage had Sting right where he wanted him, getting ready to drop the elbow from the top, but at the last minute Sting moved out of the way, and he made a comeback, the Stinger Splash connecting to Savage in the corner! But that's where Randy knew about ring presence, instead falling through the ropes and out to the arena floor! Sting and Savage continued their fist fight, Sting sending Savage right into the front row, but that's where Roddy Piper got involved as the guest enforcer, ordering Sting to lay off of Savage and let him get back in the ring. The two continued where they left off, Sting trying to get Savage in the position for the deadly Scorpion Deathlock, but Savage continued to stick to the ropes or wisely manage to reverse Sting's every attempt. Randy then quickly sped things up, eventually holding down the ropes leading a running Sting to fall over the top rope, crashing his head on the mats below! Sting was groggy as Piper went over to make sure he was alright, both men near the guard rail. Meanwhile, Savage was on the top planning to drop an axe handle on Sting, but Piper argued with Savage, telling him to give it a break. Savage didn't take kindly to this, and that's when the "Macho Man" came off the top rope with an axe handle, guillotining Piper throat first over the guard rail! Savage wasn't a fan of Piper's enforcing, as him and Sting continued the battle. Sting fired back and got Savage back in the ring, where he tripped Randy and applied the Scorpion Deathlock, but that's when Hollywood Hogan came down to ringside with Eric Bischoff! Hogan distracted the official whilst Eric Bischoff slid into the ring and cracked Sting with a lead pipe! Savage then covered, but the official only counted two! That's when Hogan went to distract the referee again as Bischoff got ready to crack Sting again with the lead pipe; but Piper intercepted! Piper slapped the Sleeper on Bischoff as Eric struggled and struggled! Sting got up as Savage got up as well, running at Sting, just for Sting to send Savage into Hogan, who was on the apron! Savage had just taken out his nWo ally/rival! Sting then locked in the Scorpion Deathlock again, Savage struggling to reach the ropes, finally tapping out! |

Winner and still WCW World Heavyweight Champion: Sting (16:23) [**3/4]

The crowd cheered as Sting released the hold, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper releasing Eric Bischoff from the Sleeper hold, and Piper raised Sting as the victor, handing him his WCW World Heavyweight Championship belt; the prophecy produced by the nWo had backfired, as Randy Savage had not won the title, and Hollywood Hogan was not going to be getting the title shot! Sting and Piper celebrated as Hollywood Hogan looked fumed on the ringside floor, seemingly angry at Randy Savage for knocking him off the apron! Sting was still the WCW Heavyweight Champion of the World, as WCW/nWo Souled Out 98' went off the air!

Alright, first PPV of the diary and the card looks really solid. Nice cruiserweight opener with Rey Mysterio retaining the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. Liked the show of respect afterwards. Good, successful Tag Team Title defense for the Steiner Brothers. Interesting note that Scott's celebration was a bit solo. Obvious that the breakup will happen eventually, but I'm interested in seeing how you do it. I imagine this would've been a great match between Chris Jericho and Ultimo Dragon. Brutal attack afterwards from Lionheart. I'm really taking a liking to Buff in this diary. Always managing to hold onto the WCW Television Championship in whatever fashion he can. I see Booker gaining the title in a feel good moment on Nitro tomorrow night. Eh, more Goldberg. Though I still want to see where you take the streak. I imagine this would have been the match of the night. DDP getting the win is great, and I loved the Flock's post-match attack. Want to see more of this feud. Nice to see Piper back, looking forward to him as the enforcer in the WCW World Heavyweight Championship match later on. Not too sure on another DQ finish. It made sense, but still. Though I did like the Giant standing tall and going after Nash as he retreated. I don't see Savage picking up the gold tonight, so that sucks for Hulk if he's anticipating a title opportunity on Nitro. Good WCW PPV debut victory for Bret Hart over Scott Hall. Bulldog making the save afterwards and taking out Spicolli was nice. Lastly, a good WCW World Heavyweight Championship match with Sting getting the victory. Marked for the Sleeper on Bischoff. Complete backfire on the NWO's plans. A good show.

An absolutely amazing night for wrestling. The Mysterio/Guerrera bout gets my vote for match of the night, and the DDP/Benoit and Hall/Hart were clinics as well. Other than the Giant/Nash and Bagwell/Booker T matches (as well as Ryback's, excuse me, Goldberg's squash) this was truly a PPV experience. I can't wait to see what you do for SuperBrawl VIII.

WCW/nWo Souled Out Love that poster. Cruiserweights opening is always a good way to go, especially when you have guys like Juvi and Mysterio. Good win for Mysterio and the embrace post match was good. Solid title defense for the Steiners going over the Guerreros. Eddie leaving Chavo behind is interesting, and I can easily see Scott joining the nWo within a few months. Great match between Chris Jericho and Ultimo Dragon. Jericho going over is the best call to make, in the future he can really be big player. Really loved that Raven promo. The storyline with Benoit has been great and I look forward to more in the future. Kind of disappointed to see Booker fail to capture the title again. I liked the finisher however as it sets up another match with Booker and Bagwell. Looks like I was right, nice stipulations for the rematch tomorrow night on Nitro. Up next is just your standard Goldberg squash at this point. Expected DDP to retain here, which is good as I feel you can still get more out from his reign, specifically a match with Raven. The Flock attack post match was good, really anticipating a match between DDP and Raven. Piper's return caught me off guard, I like adding him to the main event as the guest enforcer. I'd just try to keep his in ring action limited at this point. Decent encounter with the Giant and Kevin Nash, meh on another DQ finish. It's just common practice in 98 I suppose. Good promo from Hogan, loved the challenge to Savage and the overall storyline to be honest. Exciting match between Hall and Hart, liked Louie's involvement as well. Right call to put Hart over. Great ending to the World Title match with Sting and Piper outsmarting the nWo. Piper slapping the Sleeper on Eric was great and it's nice to see Sting retain. Overall it was a good show and I felt like it captured the time period perfectly. You've got another great diary on your hands here, Dan.

That Souled Out Poster is fantastic. Good opener to get things rolling and glad to see Mysterio retain. Good way to further the Chavo/Eddie storyline with Chavo getting pinned in the Tag Team Title Match. Hope you keep pushing Jericho and glad to see him pick up a win over Ultimo. Was expecting Booker to get the TV title but solid booking nonetheless in having Bagwell get DQ'd. Still veery interested to see where you'll go with Goldberg's streak, I'm hoping you let him have a longer run that six months, like in real life. I expected DDP to retain and was waiting for Raven to attack him after the win, which he did. I think Raven is a character that can do unique things, so I hope you keep him involved in good feuds like this. Nash and Giant would have probably been an ugly one but decent DQ finish to keep both men looking relatively strong. Bret winning was expected, interested to see where you go with him from here. Glad Sting retained and hope you give him a long reign with the belt and build up an eventual showdown with Goldberg or a Hogan rematch in the future. Overall a solid PPV.

| WCW MONDAY NITRO #125: Monday 26th January 1998 - The Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, IN - 10,480 |

7:57PM - FIRST HOUR - 5.0

- We were shown stills from WCW/nWo Souled Out 98' this past Saturday night, in particular the WCW World Heavyweight Championship match between Randy Savage and Sting, Roddy Piper making a return to play the role as special guest enforcer. It was a back and forth match, Savage eventually losing it and taking out Piper; this soon led to Hollywood Hogan and Eric Bischoff getting involved, but Sting caused miscommunication in the nWo members, managing to retain the title in the end. Tonight, the fallout begins!
- The opening video package for Monday Nitro aired, as fireworks went off upon entering the shot of the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana for tonight's live, sold-out, three-hour Nitro!
- Tony Schiavone, Larry Zbyszko and Mike Tenay welcomed us to the show as they happily discussed this weekend's successful extravaganza, WCW/nWo Souled Out! They discussed how all seemed well in World Championship Wrestling, managing to keep things out of control for the New World Order; and tensions were rising reportedly between Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage! They also commented on how tonight was important for WCW to keep the machine running as Larry Zbyszko holds the power of WCW Nitro on his back to take on the nWo President, Eric Bischoff! All this plus more, tonight over a three-hour period.
- Juventud Guerrera def. Psychosis (10:33) These two have had a classic on Monday Nitro in the past, but this was a step forward. Both men fought valiantly, trying to out-lucha the other, as Psychosis attempted to slow the pace down and test Juventud after his unfortunate loss against Rey Mysterio Jr at Souled Out 98'. Guerrera managed to make a comeback, dodging the Guillotine Legdrop and connecting with the 450 Splash for the victory! Juventud Guerrera celebrated his win to an electric crowd in Fort Wayne tonight, Guerrera victorious with his arm raised following an outstanding title defense. COMMERCIAL- The crowd in Indiana were loving the attention as the Nitro Girls were shown dancing in the stands of the Allen County Coliseum for Monday Nitro! - Gene Okerlund referred to last night's expected conclusion to a grudge between two of this organization's giants; Kevin Nash and the Giant. A competitive match ended in disqualification after Nash low blowed Giant right in front of the referee. Giant then chased Nash to the back, and so he wanted to get a few words with the 7'0 man. The Giant made his way out to a great reaction, Okerlund asking Giant about what was going through his mind, as the Giant talked about how sick he is of having Nash run from him every single night just to avoid landing on his back from the huge Chokeslam! Which is why tonight, he wants Nash in that ring, this time, no disqualification! Tonight, falls count anywhere! This rivalry has to end somewhere and he'll be damned if it isn't tonight! Giant walked off angrily as Gene talked about how he'd be catching a word with "Big Sexy" Kevin Nash later on. - Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Larry Zbyszko discussed several other occurrences from Souled Out this past Saturday night, in particular the attack that Chris Jericho did to Ultimo Dragon following the match. Jericho brutalized the Dragon with the ring steps and went right after the back with the Liontamer; and apparently Ultimo will be out of action recovering for the next couple of weeks. - Disco Inferno def. Bobby Eaton (03:22) Disco was very popular with the Fort Wayne crowd as he hooked it up with the veteran, "Beautiful" Bobby Eaton. Eaton managed to use more of a striker style in comparison to Disco's lively arsenal of attacks. Eaton had the control for a period of the match, coming off the second rope with a missile dropkick, but he soon failed to capitalize on the Alabama Jam, and Inferno capitalized with the Chart Buster! Disco Inferno celebrated after the match as the announcers discussed how Inferno had every right to dance after a win against the former Midnight Express member. - We were then shown stills of the WCW World Television Championship match from last Saturday night at Souled Out, Booker T nearly pulling off the win on three occasions, just for Buff Bagwell to get himself disqualified in the time-limitless match. Booker then met with JJ Dillon, as the WCW President declared that another time-limitless title defense would be made by Bagwell for tonight, facing Booker; but if Buff got himself disqualified or counted out, he'd lose the WCW World Television Championship! COMMERCIAL- We returned to Monday Nitro as Tony Schiavone, Larry Zbyszko and Mike Tenay discussed what had occurred already tonight and what was still to come in the next two and a half hours, such as the WCW World Television Championship on the line; Chris Jericho, Davey Boy Smith, Bill Goldberg, Eddie Guerrero, Lex Luger, Curt Hennig and various others in action; Rey Mysterio Jr taking on Silver King; the arrival of the nWo, and comments from Hollywood Hogan; Larry Zbyszko vs Eric Bischoff for the power of Nitro in our main event; And will Kevin Nash accept the Giant's challenge for tonight? Still to come! - Eddie Guerrero made his way out to the ring with Chavo Guerrero Jr accompanying him, Chavo quite unhappy as uncle Eddie took a microphone upon getting into the ring. Guerrero talked about how they didn't get the job done and win the WCW World Tag Team Championships at Souled Out, and it's because of his knucklehead nephew, Chavo! The crowd booed as Guerrero Jr accepted the humiliation, Eddie telling Chavo that for his match tonight, he wanted Chavo to sit on the floor at ringside, his back to the ring! Eddie told Chavo that these punishments will make him a winner, much like uncle Eddie! - Eddie Guerrero (w/Chavo Guerrero Jr) def. Black Cat (04:45) This was actually quite a back and forth encounter as Eddie was out to try and embarrass Chavo Guerrero Jr for taking the fall against the Steiner Brothers in the title match at Souled Out. Black Cat, from Japan managed to keep in there with Eddie, almost having him done for with the bridging German suplex. But Eddie continued to bring the fight to Black Cat, managing to roll him up with the tights for the three! Eddie Guerrero celebrated his win at ringside, as he had his nephew, Chavo Guerrero Jr raise his hand despite not being able to watch a second of his match! But it seemed like Chavo had learned his lesson, Eddie hugging him after the match. - The Nitro Girls were shown dancing on the rampway, as the announcers informed us that the WCW World Television Championship return match was coming up next. COMMERCIAL- An advertisement aired, promoting the WCW Bruise Cruise. - Booker T def. Buff Bagwell to win the WCW World Television Championship (11:34) This was one of the more anticipated matches of the night, as Buff Bagwell had been cornered in recent affairs against the challenger, Booker T. Booker had been screwed out of the title on two occasions, by time limit draw and disqualification; but tonight, if Buff was to get himself disqualified or counted out, he'd have to surrender the title. Booker fought hard as Bagwell showed signs of fatigue, induced by the battle he had with Booker two night prior, and as Bagwell worked away at Booker, he grew impatient. This led Bagwell to go up for the Buff Blockbuster; missing in the process! Booker soon went up and nailed the Harlem Hangover to score the pinfall! The War Memorial Coliseum exploded as the fans cheered, and the referee raised Booker T's hand high, passing on to him his new WCW World Television Championship! Booker celebrated by "raising the roof", just like he did every single night as Buff Bagwell slowly rolled out of the ring in disappointment. WCW had taken back one of their title belts!

9:01PM - SECOND HOUR - 4.8

- The second hour pyrotechnics for Monday Nitro went off, as Tony Schiavone, Larry Zbyszko and Mike Tenay discussed how successful the first hour of Nitro tonight had been, talking about Booker T's uprising in World Championship Wrestling over the past five years, and how he continues to grow. Schiavone and Tenay wished Zbyszko luck tonight as Bobby Heenan replaced him.
COMMERCIAL
- We returned to Monday Nitro as the theme of the New World Order hit, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall making their way out to the ring to a loud chorus of boos, as the Outsiders brought along with them their imposter World Tag Team Championships and lackey, Louie Spicolli. Hall and Nash got in the ring as Hall introduced themselves to the crowd, invoking the illustrious "WCW/nWo survey". Once again, the nWo "good guys" won. Nash talked about the reason they came out here, and that's to refer to Souled Out and earlier tonight, involving the Giant. The Giant is so obsessed with "Big Sexy", and he doesn't blame him; many women want to do the same! But tonight, if Giant wants a rematch with Nash, then so be it; as long as they can make it a No-Disqualification match! They'll beat the hell out of RAW tonight!
- Scott Hall (w/Kevin Nash & Louie Spicolli) def. The British Bulldog (06:34) This was a great way to start off the second hour, a measure of retribution for Scott Hall as he was defeated on Saturday night by Bret Hart. Tonight, he had a hard task taking on Bret's brother-in-law, Davey Boy Smith as Smith used agility to outwrestle Hall and nearly got him with the Running Powerslam, had it not been for an intervening Louie Spicolli. Bulldog soon got rid of Spicolli, but by then it was too much for Bulldog as Hall got him with the Outsider's Edge to pick up the win! Scott Hall celebrated his win to boos as he continued to stomp away at the abdomen of the British Bulldog, Louie Spicolli and Kevin Nash joining in just for Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart to make the save! The nWo members ran for the hills as Bret attended to Davey, then picking up a microphone and challenging Kevin Nash and Scott Hall for those phony World Tag Team Championship belts next week on Nitro, because the Hart Foundation would be reuniting! Bret dropped the mic as Nash and Hall continued to leave. - The 'WCW Nitro Party' vignette of the week aired. - Fit Finley def. Greg Valentine (04:46) This match was a continuation of their encounter on Saturday Night this past weekend, where Finley opened up a challenge to anyone in the locker room; and out came the veteran, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, who proceeded to beat him. This was the rematch Fit Finley had asked for, as he exchanged hard-hitting blows with Valentine, Valentine going after the leg whereas Finley continued to just pound at the head of the "Hammer". Greg soon got ready to get Finley in the Figure-Four Leglock just for Finley to cradle Valentine for the upset! Fit Finley rolled out of the ring to boos, as Greg Valentine looked quite annoyed with what had just happened. - Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay talked about how we still had so much to get through as later tonight, the power of Nitro was on the line between Larry Zbyszko and Eric Bischoff; And now announced, Kevin Nash taking on The Giant in a No-Disqualification match! But up next, we'd hear from JJ Dillon on the status of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship picture! COMMERCIAL- Gene Okerlund was shown at the entrance way, as he welcomed us back to Nitro from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He referred to last night's WCW World Heavyweight Championship match between Sting and Randy Savage, Sting gaining the win. He then introduced WCW President, JJ Dillon as the President came out. Okerlund asked Dillon about the current status of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship and who would now challenge for the title belt. Dillon went to continue, when suddenly the theme of Randy "Macho Man" Savage hit, the crowd giving Savage a mixed reaction as he came out alongside Elizabeth, Savage seemingly outraged about Saturday. When asked why he was here, Savage complained about being screwed out of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship by three men, Hollywood Hogan, Roddy Piper and Eric Bischoff! Savage talked about how he was sick and tired of their politics coming into play, and even if he did walk out victorious last Saturday, Hogan would be the last person he'd defend the title against! Savage continued, talking about how Roddy Piper claimed to play the role of an impartial official, but got in the way of his venture to winning the title. And for all of these reasons, the "Macho Man" was demanding a rematch! The crowd booed him as JJ Dillon firmly denied him of a rematch, telling him to instead "earn it". Savage started getting angrier, but that's when Hollywood Hogan's theme hit and out came the man himself! Hogan confronted Savage as he asked him why he was placing the blame on him, stating that Hogan was next in line for a WCW World Heavyweight Championship shot anyway! Savage rebounded, telling Hogan that he failed in December at Starrcade, and so he definitely didn't deserve another title shot! Hogan told Savage that he lost the fall this past weekend too. Savage and Hogan yammered back and forth as Dillon tried to get in the middle of them, telling the two with a smirk on his face that they both have convincing cases, and he's going to review the situation and give them both an answer next Monday on Nitro! Dillon wandered off as Savage and Hogan continued arguing, Okerlund trying to regain order in the New World Order here on Nitro! COMMERCIAL- The Nitro Girls were shown dancing in the ring as we returned to Monday Nitro, the announcers discussing the most recent meltdown in the nWo, showing a replay of what just happened with a heated argument over power taking place between Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage! - Raven made his way out to the entrance way prior to what was scheduled to be a six-man tag team match with him and his Flock, taking on Diamond Dallas Page, Marty Jannetty and Jim Duggan by stating that he was cancelling his appearance in this six-man tag team bout, and instead he was going to insert his newest recruit, Reese into the match on his behalf! - Saturn, Sick Boy & Reese (w/Raven & Lodi) def. Diamond Dallas Page, Jim Duggan & Marty Jannetty (05:22) Reese stood over everyone, even Diamond Dallas Page, as this heavyweight grunge-influenced newcomer of the Flock battered away at Marty Jannetty before Saturn continued where Reese left over, working away at the shoulder of Jannetty; DDP groaning trying to make the hot tag. Sick Boy eventually dropped the ball, as Jannetty dropkicked him as he came off the ropes, and slowly but surely he got the tag to the WCW United States Heavyweight Champion! Duggan got in as well, and before long a six-man brawl ensued! But this just distracted the referee, and as the official wasn't in position, Raven slipped into the ring and landed the Evenflow DDT on Page! Saturn then made the cover, and got the victory! The crowd booed as the Flock celebrated their win, Raven whispering something in Diamond Dallas Page's ear before leading Lodi, Sick Boy, Saturn and Reese to the backstage area. - An advertisement aired, promoting Thursday Thunder this Thursday on the TBS Superstation, as we are apparently going to hear from "Rowdy" Roddy Piper following the guest enforcer appearance he made at Souled Out two nights ago; plus, Hollywood Hogan will be live on Thunder, from 8PM! - Michael Buffer did ring introductions for our first of two main events for tonight, the No-Disqualification match! COMMERCIAL- Kevin Nash vs The Giant in a No Disqualification match; went to a non-finish (08:45) As we came back from the commercial, these two men were going at it at ringside, and to Nash's credit, he once again didn't bring any friends with him tonight; possibly due to the disruption in Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage's camps, or possibly due to the preparation of Eric Bischoff's match later tonight. Nash introduced the steel chair to fire away from Giant's heavy-handed offense, but Giant managed to get a hold of him, the two continuing their fight all around ringside, eventually tracking Nash in the ring and even preparing him for the Chokeslam, but as he got Nash up, Scott Hall got in the ring and chop blocked Giant! The crowd booed as Konnan, Scott Norton, Vincent and Louie Spicolli joined in on the attack, all the nWo members attacking Giant with stomps! The official threw the match out. The crowd booed as this match disintegrated into a one-sided beatdown from the nWo against the Giant! Scott Norton delivered an impressive backbreaker to Giant before Scott Hall led the way to "Big Sexy" getting in his fair-share of attacking! Nash kneed Giant in the ribs and went for the Jackknife Powerbomb on the Giant, but he dropped Giant on his head! The crowd "oohed" as Nash and the nWo seemed like they knew they were in hot water, scattering the ring and heading for the back! The crowd were silent as were the announcers, officials coming out to the ring with a giant stretcher to make sure he was able to leave on his feet. - We cut to the announcers as Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay discussed what had just happened, a dangerous Jackknife Powerbomb gone wrong, and it's all down to the nWo's doing. They stated that they'd have an update on the Giant's condition, what could be a broken neck, before the night was over with.

10PM - THIRD HOUR - 4.9

- The third hour fireworks went off.
COMMERCIAL
- The theme of the "Nature Boy" Ric Flair hit as we returned to Monday Nitro, the fans coming to their feet as the man himself strutted on out to the rampway, Gene Okerlund introducing the man himself! Flair 'wooed' at the sight of Gene Okerlund, as he told Okerlund that it had been an eventful night. Gene told Flair that he wasn't able to attend Souled Out this past weekend, but has Flair seen the show? Ric responded, stating that he did, and he was happy to see fellow WCW legend, Sting pull out all of the stops to retain the WCW World Heavyweight Championship from the nWo. Flair talked about how good tonight was, with all of the tension riding with Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage; but what he heard earlier tonight from WCW President, and his former manager, JJ Dillon: he is going to review the situation and determine a new number one contender to the WCW World Heavyweight Championship next week on Nitro, and currently it's all about either Savage or Hogan. Well now it's going to get complicated, because the "Nature Boy" was placing his name down! He's seen Sting fight for many years, but now is the time that he wants to meet Sting in the ring one more time for that title belt! Flair strutted around Gene before leaving.
- An advertisement aired, promoting the encore presentation of WCW/nWo Souled Out 98', on pay-per-view tomorrow night at 8PM.
- Rey Mysterio Jr def. Silver King (04:21) This was an exciting way to kick off the third hour in the ring, as these two luchadores tore it up, Mysterio wanting to recover a victory following his loss to Juventud Guerrera on Saturday at Souled Out. Silver King managed to slow the match down against the more acrobatic Mysterio, but it didn't last long as Rey quickened the pace up and soon got King in position for the top rope hurricanrana, giving him the win! Rey Mysterio Jr celebrated his win to cheers as the Fort Wayne crowd appreciated his work tonight in beating Silver King; all except Chris Jericho! Jericho came out stating that he could do better to some huge boos from the capacity crowd! Jericho told Mysterio to get his monkeyass out of the ring, because he was about to prove how much better he was than this "luchadore"! COMMERCIAL- Chris Jericho def. El Dandy (02:56) This was Chris Jericho's attempt to prove to Rey Mysterio Jr that he was the better man: Jericho previously worked in Mexico as a luchadore, but here he was up against a fellow Mexican wrestler known as "El Dandy". Dandy tried to put up a fight, but Jericho managed to outmaneuver his every attempt. It was mentioned during this match that Ultimo Dragon had suffered a knee injury and would be out for several months with it, the effects of what Chris Jericho did to him at Souled Out forty-eight hours ago. Jericho caught Dandy with the Liontamer, and that was it. The crowd booed as Chris Jericho placed a cocky foot on El Dandy's chest, as Jericho genuinely seemed to believe that he was better than Rey Mysterio Jr! - We cut to Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan and Mike Tenay as they discussed what happened earlier tonight with Kevin Nash inadvertently dropping the Giant on his head with the Jackknife Powerbomb. They discussed how Giant was stretchered away and taken to a nearby hospital, but they have no idea what sort of shape Giant is in. They will have another update on the Giant's condition this Thursday on Thunder. They shifted the focus to tonight's main event, Larry Zbyszko taking on Eric Bischoff for control of Monday Nitro. They showed footage of Starrcade 97', where Bischoff fought Zbyszko for Nitro, only to come up short. Bischoff is fighting for the nWo to gain control in the heat of tension, whilst Zbyszko wants justice; and for Nitro to remain WCW Nitro! We'll find out what happens later tonight. - Bill Goldberg def. Mortis (w/James Vandenburg) (01:56) Mortis tried to put up a fight against the unstoppable Goldberg, but this rookie had too much heat behind him, dropping Mortis with a gorilla press slam and a clothesline. Vandenburg didn't even try and get in Mortis' way, intimidated by the raw energy behind Bill Goldberg. Goldberg quickly finished Mortis with the Spear, followed up with the almighty Jackhammer. The fans cheered as Bill Goldberg celebrated his win, a sign in the crowd reading "22-0", documenting the tremendous winning streak that this newcomer had put together thus far in the past four months. COMMERCIAL- Chris Benoit (w/Raven) def. Ray Traylor (05:23) The Flock member was unsuccessful in claiming the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship against Diamond Dallas Page last night, but tonight he took his frustration out on Ray Traylor, being pounded on in the early moments of the match just for Benoit to make a comeback and work away at the shoulder of Traylor. Traylor struggled to be as quick as Benoit, as Traylor managed to get in some more offense, setting up for the sidewalk slam just for Benoit to reverse into the Crippler Crossface, and Traylor tapped! The crowd booed as Chris Benoit celebrated his win, Raven joining Benoit in the ring as the Flock members took over the ring. Raven grabbed a microphone and talked about how last night, the Flock were unable to take the WCW US Heavyweight Championship from Diamond Dallas Page, but they aren't done with him yet. Raven talked about how DDP was a mere symbol in World Championship Wrestling: the undeserving get lucky, and the lucky get rich. Well what about him? What about Raven! Benoit took the mic, telling the fans that he would not stop until he had taken Dallas Page's shoulder apart, and taken his gold! - An advertisement aired, promoting WCW Saturday Night, this Saturday on the TBS Superstation, starring the Steiner Brothers in action with nWo members, Scott Norton and Konnan for the WCW World Tag Team Championships! Plus a lot more, this Saturday from 6:05PM. - Curt Hennig (w/Rick Rude) def. Rick Martel (04:35) Curt Hennig has been lost in the shuffle in recent weeks, but tonight he was facing a man that he'd met before earlier in the decade, back in 1992. Hennig and Martel exchanged blows as the action seemed even, Martel managing to get in his fair-share of offense against the former WCW US Heavyweight Champion. Hennig continued to pound away on Martel though, soon delivering the Hennig-Plex for the victory. Curt Hennig celebrated his win to boos, as Rick Rude proudly raised his arm, yelling into the camera that Hennig deserved respect and he'd get it in due time! - In the backstage area, Eric Bischoff was shown kickboxing the air, accompanied by Scott Norton and Konnan; and up next, the nWo President facing the Color Commentator of Monday Nitro, Larry Zbyszko; WCW vs nWo, Nitro is on the line: next! COMMERCIAL- Michael Buffer did the ring introductions for our main event. During the introductions, Scott Norton and Konnan were removed by WCW President, JJ Dillon, leaving Eric Bischoff to fight Larry Zbyszko all by himself! - Larry Zbyszko def. Eric Bischoff to retain WCW's power of Monday Nitro (06:22) Eric Bischoff tried to pull out all of the stops to try and get the win, especially after his backup plan of having Konnan and Scott Norton at ringside backfired dramatically. Larry Zbyszko once again proved why he was still a driving force behind WCW Monday Nitro and a handy part in opposing the New World Order tonight, taking Bischoff down with every attempt. Elizabeth soon snuck out to ringside confusingly, attempting to pass a pair of brass knuckles to Bischoff, but Randy Savage then came out to argue with Elizabeth for helping Bischoff! Meanwhile, Eric clocked Zbyszko with the knucks, covering him but the "Living Legend" kicked out miraculously! Hollywood Hogan soon came out to argue with Savage with Liz in the middle, as Eric was distracted by the shambles of nWo figureheads arguing on the aisleway! He turned around to receive a Piledriver from Larry, and WCW picked up the victory! The crowd cheered as Larry Zbyszko's hand was raised high, and it was determined that World Championship Wrestling was going to remain in control of Monday Nitro! Hollywood Hogan looked annoyed, engaging in more of an argument with Randy Savage, as Nitro went off the air!

10:56PM - END SHOW - 4.7

It's only a matter of time before the nWo gains control. Nice choice having Booker win the TV Championship as we now have a more talented wrestler holding it. If there's more Benoit and Page, I'm all for it. This was a mixed bag of an episode as there wasn't much development. Oh well, you can't have a winner all the time, right?

WCW Monday Night Nitro Looking forward to the fallout show here. I'm confused by the opening. Isn't Rey Mysterio the champion? Is that just a mistake? Good interview from the Giant and a blow off match tonight with Nash would be great. Solid win from Disco Inferno I guess, just seemed like filler. Which I expect from a three hour show. Love Eddie making Chavo sit on the floor and look away, I'm interested in this angle. Good win for Guerrero. I look forward to what's next from the Guerreros. Great first hour main event with Booker T finally taking the Television Championship. The right call was made in my opinion. Glad to see Kevin Nash accept the match with the Giant later on tonight. Scott Hall going over Davey Boy is a great way to get his heat back. Liked the run in from Jim Neidhart, Anvil Fan would be proud. Would love a Hart Foundation versus nWo match at SuperBrawl. Decent win for Finlay over the Hammer. Loved the segment with Savage and Hogan, the angle with these two have been played out to perfection. I can see Hogan getting a shot, but I'd love a triple threat. Nice debut for Reese and it was the right call for the Flock to go over. Really looking forward to a future match between DDP and Raven, wonder what Raven whispered into DDP's ear. What a finish to the Giant and Nash match with the Jackknife Powerbomb spot. Wasn't a similar angle played out in real life? Still interested either way. Wow, wasn't expect the part with Flair putting his name in the hat for a shot at the WCW Championship. Expecting a swerve next week. Good win for Mysterio, still confused about the whole title situation though. Interested in a feud with Jericho; speaking of Jericho good win for him as well. I loved Jericho and Mysterio's match at Souled Out 98 so excited for one in here. Another episode another win for Goldberg. Decent win for Benoit and I liked the post match Flock Promo. The feud between the Flock and DDP is probably my favorite in the diary. Nice win for Curt Hennig, hopefully he starts to pick up the pace. Alright main event, good to see Zbyszko retain the power as it adds more fuel to the fire that is the Hogan/Savage angle. Overall it was a good show, just seemed like a lot of filler this week.

Nitro: - First, I'm honestly surprised with myself that I haven't replied to this already. I loved me some 98. - Great opener, I love that you're giving the cruierweights plenty of time and attention to do what they do best. I was always a bit of a Juvi fan so I'm enjoying his title reign. - Big match with Nash and Giant booked for tonight. And yes, the pun was intended. - Throwaway win for Disco here, he wasn't likely to lose this one. - Interesting stuff between Eddie and Chavo here, I'm intrigued on how long you'll keep this up before they either win the titles or inevitably split up and feud. - Big win for Booker here, this was the result I wanted to see at Souled Out. Hopefully Bagwell can bounce back, he was never the best wrestler but he rarely failed to entertain. - Decent stuff with the Outsiders and a good win for Hall. Bit of a nostalgia kick with the Hart Foundation reuniting, not sure whether I really want that to be a permanent thing though. - Big win for Finlay here, I'm hoping for big things from him. He's one of those rare guys where age really does make him seem better and he could definitely go at this point. - Big angle with Hogan and Savage here, it'll be very interesting to see how you continue with this going forward considering how much attention a feud between this one could get if booked properly. - Ah, Reese, otherwise known as the legendary Yeti. The Flock was such a bizarre team because guys like Reese and Sick Boy just weren't very impressive and it kind of held the group back. Maybe you'll do something big with them though, because Raven deserves a main event run. - Classic Russo booking right there with the non-finish in a no disqualifications match. I'm hoping it was meant to be an ironic take on WCW booking rather than a legitimate choice because quite frankly, it kind of sucked. - Another Sting / Flair match? I could be down for that. Then again, the dream situation is a four way, now that'd be a legendary match. - Liking the stuff between Mysterio and Jericho, both men obviously needed to go over here. I always enjoyed Jericho at this point and I'd love to see him rise up the card. - Dominant Goldberg win. Standard. - Benoit as a member of the Flock is awesome, it's a good step away from guys like Reese. More Benoit, less Reese, that's all I need. - Decent win for Hennig, but really not sure if you needed this match here considering how many we've already had. Probably could have been saved for Saturday Night. - I guess this needed to be the main event even if I've never been a fan of non-wrestlers featured in the main event. Good to see Zbysko taking the win, would be too easy to have the NWO taking control in my mind. - A good show, even if reviewing three hours is a pain in the ass. I do think you overdid it on the matches, in the third hour particularly, but that's an issue with such a big issue. I always thought that they needed to cut down the roster around this time and seeing it here I still think you'd be better off losing some guys.

| WCW THURSDAY THUNDER #004: Thursday 29th January 1998 - The Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, TN - 10,085 |

8PM - FIRST HOUR - 3.7

- A new video package aired to present the opening of this week's edition of Thursday Thunder. We then cut to the live Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee; as there was a brand new set, pyrotechnics going off.
- Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Lee Marshall welcomed us to Thursday Thunder on the TBS Superstation, discussing previous occurrences from Monday Nitro this past week, the current WCW World Heavyweight Championship picture in the atmosphere; Larry Zbyszko beating Eric Bischoff to retain WCW's power over Nitro; Booker T winning the WCW World Television Championship from Buff Bagwell; more hostility in the New World Order; And of course, the Giant was injured from a Jackknife Powerbomb gone wrong from Kevin Nash, we're expecting an update on his condition tonight! Plus, Roddy Piper will be on the show, as well as Hollywood Hogan apparently!?
- Booker T def. Black Cat to retain the WCW World Television Championship (04:36) Booker T won the WCW World Television Championship on Nitro this past week, but he had to deal with Japanese veteran, Black Cat tonight on Thunder, the Japanese specialist trying to take Booker down with some unorthodox attacks, but he came up short, Booker finishing Cat off with the Harlem Hangover! Booker T celebrated his win as the official handed him his WCW World Television Championship, Booker then being approached by Gene Okerlund, who wanted to get some words with Booker following his win last Monday on Nitro, managing to knock off Buff Bagwell of the nWo to win the title. Booker told Gene that he was ready to be the champ, he was destined for it. And he's going to continue to fight for it, because it's his, and this title represents pure athleticism! He's gonna be the best damn fighting champion World Championship Wrestling has ever seen if you can dig that! COMMERCIAL- We returned to Monday Nitro as Gene Okerlund introduced the President of the New World Order, Eric Bischoff! Bischoff came out looking unsatisfied, following his loss to Larry Zbyszko this past Monday on Nitro. Gene asked Eric about the recent dissension in the ranks of the nWo, and how Monday could have been the first sign of a fatal link of things to come with the dastardly organization. Bischoff told Gene that maybe Hollywood Hogan and Randy Savage aren't on the same page lately, but after we find out that Hulk is worthy and next in line for a shot at the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, the nWo will be back on top of the world! They took out the Giant, they took out Ric Flair before, they're just going to take Sting out, and they'll prove that nobody can stop them! - We went to a replay from Monday Nitro this past week, where WCW World Cruiserweight Champion, Rey Mysterio Jr managed to get a win over Silver King, just for Chris Jericho to rudely interrupt with insults directed at him, as the "Lionheart" promised to do better than Rey in his own match, as Jericho then defeated El Dandy. - Chris Jericho def. Silver King (05:28) Chris Jericho may have defeated El Dandy on Nitro this past week, but tonight he had to face Rey Mysterio Jr's opponent from Nitro, Silver King. Silver King put up more of a fight than Dandy, as he flew at Jericho at all different angles, being more of a technician in this match, appearing to get the better of the "Lionheart". Jericho almost lost the match with an inside cradle, but he made a way out and battled back. King then went for a death valley driver, but Jericho slipped out and applied the Liontamer, King tapping out fast! The crowd booed as Chris Jericho picked up the win, Jericho refusing to let go of the hold despite the bell sounding! Silver King was in agony, but at that moment, Rey Mysterio Jr hit the ring, going head-to-head with Jericho until Jericho pushed Rey on his ass, then slid out of the ring! Jericho wasn't in the mood for the WCW World Cruiserweight Champion tonight. COMMERCIAL- We see a replay from last Monday on Nitro, as Scott Hall and Kevin Nash orchestrated an attack on the British Bulldog, just for Davey Boy Smith to be rescued by his Calgary cavalry, Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart! Bret then happily announced that next Monday, the Hart Foundation wanted to reunite to take on the Outsiders for their nWo World Tag Team Championships. Tonight in our main event, the Hart Foundation return to Thunder as they take on Buff Bagwell and Scott Norton! - Dean Malenko def. Konnan (07:35) A back-and-forth encounter between these two men, as Dean Malenko has been under the radar for quite a while recently, Konnan as well, having been on Saturday Night quite a lot recently. Malenko and Konnan exchanged chain-wrestling holds, before Konnan got the better of Malenko with a hard-hitting slap, knocking him down. Konnan stretched Malenko, trying to get him in position for the Tequila Sunrise, but Malenko soon fired back, Konnan managing to fire back again, planning on going up to the top rope. Konnan tried to go for the missile dropkick, but Malenko timed it perfectly, the Texas Cloverleaf putting Konnan away! Dean Malenko celebrated his win to cheers as he had just given the New World Order yet another loss! - An advertisement aired, promoting Saturday night's Internet-exclusive pay-per-view event, Boston Brawl. You can purchase the event at wcwwrestling.com for only $7.95! - We returned to Thursday Thunder as Tony Schiavone, Mike Tenay and Lee Marshall were at the announce table discussing last Monday's events involving Kevin Nash and the Giant; after feuding for several months, Nash no-showed their match at Starrcade 97' in December, which prompted to infuriate the Giant. This all came up to the WCW/nWo Souled Out 98' show this past weekend, as Nash once again dodged Giant's antics, getting himself disqualified. Then, Giant called Nash out to a match last Monday on Nitro, Nash accepting. The match came about with no-disqualification, and the nWo got involved; leading to Nash attempting the Jackknife Powerbomb, with Giant landing on his head after Nash failed to lift Giant up well enough. The nWo scattered up the aisleway as paramedics hit the ring to attend to the harmed Giant. Schiavone, Tenay and Marshall reveal that Giant hasn't broken his neck, but will be out of action for several weeks due to trauma and a broken vertebrae. Doctors apparently have stated that it was a close call, however. - From that point, we go up to Gene Okerlund on the aisleway, with WCW President, JJ Dillon. Gene asks Dillon about what he had to say in regards to Kevin Nash nearly crippling the Giant last Monday on Nitro. Dillon talked about how brutal it was that Giant would be out of action, especially against a power-hungry "Big Sexy". But he has reprimanded Nash and has fined him for $50,000. Dillon went on to say that for the time being, for standards and practices' sake, the powerbomb will be banned, and anybody that does it will suffer the same fate that Nash did! The crowd gave JJ a mixed reaction for his authority. - Lex Luger def. Raven (w/Chris Benoit) by disqualification (07:24) This was a fresh mesh of talent, first time in WCW history for the "Total Package" to take on the leader of the Flock, Raven. Chris Benoit was in Raven's corner as Lex managed to overpower Raven several times, tossing him around the ring whilst Raven continuously retreated to the floor. But as the match reached ringside, Raven allowed the "Canadian Crippler" unleash hell on Luger whilst the master distracted the referee. At one point, Chris Benoit had the Crippler Crossface on Luger at ringside, as Raven distracted the referee, and that's when Diamond Dallas Page hopped out through the crowd, the WCW US Heavyweight Champion informing the referee of what was going on; and the referee disqualified him! The crowd cheered as Diamond Dallas Page quickly rolled out of the ring to trade blows with Raven and Chris Benoit, the WCW US Heavyweight Champion valiantly trying just for Sick Boy, Kidman, Lodi, Riggs, Reese and Saturn to hit ringside, the Flock dominating DDP and disappearing through the crowd with him!? COMMERCIAL

9:06PM - SECOND HOUR - 3.8

- The second-hour pyrotechnics went off, as Tony Schiavone, Lee Marshall and Mike Tenay welcomed us to the second hour of Thursday Thunder! They discussed everything that happened in the first hour, but still to come, scheduled appearances from Roddy Piper and allegedly Hollywood Hogan! But also, the Hart Foundation reunites for tag action against Scott Norton and Buff Bagwell of the New World Order!
- We see Jerry Lee Lewis in the front row, as the announcers acknowledged Thursday Thunder and World Championship Wrestling as THE place to be!
- The theme of "Rowdy" Roddy Piper hit to a loud ovation, as out came the man himself, "Hot Rod" making his way out to the ring where Gene Okerlund was waiting. Piper shook hands with some fans around ringside before entering the ring and confronting Okerlund. Gene talked about how he's known Piper a long, long time and it's great to see him still in the ring. Piper talked about how he wanted to come back to represent neutrality, and that's exactly what he did last Saturday at Souled Out! Piper discussed how justice was served, but something happened that needs justice serving, and that's what "Macho Man" Randy Savage did to him in rebellion to his enforcing! Savage attacked the "Hot Rod", and when you throw rocks at a man with a machine gun, you don't get away with it! It's why he didn't leave Souled Out as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, and he's still not allowing Savage to get away from him, which is why he wants to meet Savage in the ring on Nitro for a nice, open-friendly discussion, mano-e-mano. No nWo, no WCW, no Gene Okerlund! Piper told Gene that he was sorry but a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do, and that's kick ass and eat chewing gum!
- The 'WCW On the Road...' vignette aired.
- Rick Martel def. Meng (w/Jimmy Hart) (03:51) This seemed like an uneven affair, as Meng seemed to overpower Martel during most of the match, Martel managing to use the "hook and duck" routine quite well, but Meng continued to dominate, and this match began looking quite one-sided. Meng soon went for the Tongan Death Grip, but Martel went between Meng's legs, off the ropes and into a huge lariat! Meng went for the Tongan Death Grip again, but Martel rolled Meng up, getting the three! Rick Martel celebrated his win as Jimmy Hart looked at Meng in disbelief, as Meng's state of shock turned to anger and frustration, planting the Tongan Death Grip on Martel and refusing to let go, even tossing the referee halfway across the ring! Meng left, as the "Mouth of the South" Jimmy Hart attempted to keep order. COMMERCIAL- The Steiner Brothers (w/Ted Dibiase) def. The Blue Bloods in a non-title match (07:25) This was a competitive match between two teams that feuded last year over the WCW World Tag Team Championships, but tonight was not a similar case. David Taylor and Steven Regal had some miscommunication throughout, as Scott and Rick were on top almost all the way through this match. They tried to double-team Scott, but big Scotty managed to fire back whenever he was able to, but mysteriously he not once attempted to tag in Rick. Rick got bored and got involved, taking out Regal as Scotty finished off Taylor with a big Steiner Screwdriver for the win! The Steiner Brothers continued their roll tonight, celebrating together, although Scotty seemed to embrace the camera more than Rick and Ted Dibiase. But despite being WCW World Tag Team Champions, it seemed like they were shoved under the rug compared to the big match hyped for Nitro this Monday between the Outsiders and the Hart Foundation, the imposter "nWo World Tag Team Championships" on the line! Steven Regal seemed quite upset about the loss that the Blue Bloods suffered, delivering a huge high knee to his own partner and longtime ally, David Taylor! Regal left alone to a mixed reaction. - An advertisement aired, promoting WCW Superbrawl VIII, live on pay-per-view on February 22, 1998 from San Francisco, California. - The theme of Hollywood Hogan hit to a loud chorus of boos, as the man himself made his way out to the aisleway, where Gene Okerlund was standing. Okerlund asked Hogan why he was here tonight and what the purpose his being here was. Hogan told Okerlund simply that he wanted to justify his point to being the next real number one contender to the WCW World Heavyweight Championship! He told Gene that he fought hard for that title, every single time he defended it, every single time the nWo ruled the world. And now JJ Dillon wants to tear him and Randy Savage apart, so be it! The nWo will live with or without Savage, it's just one man! But considering that he won in his rematch, that only seven-thousand fans strong saw, the Nitro after Starrcade, he should get the title shot, nobody else! - The announcers hyped up Monday Nitro this upcoming week on TNT, as it will feature JJ Dillon reveal the real number one contender to Sting's WCW World Heavyweight Championship; Kevin Nash will respond seven days after nearly crippling the Giant; Plus, the nWo World Tag Team Championships will be on the line when the Hart Foundation reunites to challenge the Outsiders! Plus, Davey Boy Smith, Buff Bagwell, Booker T, the cruiserweights, Raven, Diamond Dallas Page and a whole lot of other WCW superstars in action! COMMERCIAL- An advertisement aired, promoting WCW Saturday Night this weekend, live at 6:05pm on the TBS Superstation; the main event will feature Bill Goldberg in his biggest challenge to date, taking on Wrath! - The Hart Foundation def. Buff Bagwell & Scott Norton (w/Vincent) (13:43) Our main event for Thunder this week was an important one, as Bret Hart and Jim Neidhart put on the pink and black for the first time since 1992, but the former WCW World Television Champion, Buff Bagwell was not happy after losing the belt to Booker T on Nitro; Bagwell and Scott Norton double-teaming Jim Neidhart and isolating him away from Bret Hart. The "Hitman" struggled as the "Anvil" was in pain, courtesy of the mass man known as Scott "Flash" Norton. Norton had a bear hug applied, but Anvil fired back, finally making the tag to the "Hitman"! Bret cleared house, even managing to take down Norton, and Vincent! Bret wrapped it up full-circle, soon planting Bagwell with an inverted atomic drop, applying the Sharpshooter; but Norton jumped Bret and had him up for the Shoulderbreaker, just for Neidhart to get involved. And that's when the Hart Attack connected, Bret covering for the three! The fans cheered as the reunited Hart Foundation celebrated their win, a great preparation match for Nitro this Monday night, when they challenge Kevin Nash and Scott Hall for the nWo World Tag Team Championships! Thursday Thunder went off the air.

9:59PM - END SHOW - 3.75

THE BRIT REPORT Presented by Matt Burke on Friday 30th January 1998 -- You can see my reviews of WCW/nWo Souled Out, Monday Nitro & Thursday Thunder here.-- The Giant was legitimately injured this past Monday on Nitro, but has been cleared to compete. However, it seems as though the company is planning on having Giant sell the injury for several weeks (with pay, of course). However, in other important news, Mortis suffered a concussion in his match with Bill Goldberg on Monday. Mortis will legitimately be on the bench for several weeks. -- WCW has released several promotional posters set to promote Superbrawl VIII as one of the most important events of the year. You can see them here: ( Sting, Hogan, Superbrawl PPV) -- International workers from England, Robbie Brookside and Doc Dean have signed contracts with WCW. Brookside and Dean have competed in Europe and Japan and only recently started working a few dates in the States before being picked up. Apparently they already have an angle lined up involving Steven Regal. -- WCW Monday Nitro scored a great 4.7 last week. What's more impressive is the outstanding 5.0 rating that the show got at the start of the show, the buzz from Souled Out is clearly not finished yet. Meanwhile, WWF's RAW is WAR produced a measly 3.5 rating. -- WCW Thursday Thunder last night drew a decent 3.75 rating.
