Hi there. I own a pretty big wrestling DVD collection, and I was wondering. Should I switch to buying Blu Rays?
The only reason I would switch is because I have a feeling that in a few years it will just be all Blu Rays. Just like when there was the switch from VHS to DVD.
What do you guys think? Are Blu Rays worth it?

Blu-Ray's are VERY good and are supposed to provide the best quality sound and picture. However, on blu-ray.com, I have seen some of their ratings for some recent Blu-Ray releases and they weren't too positive, to say the least.
For example, Footloose (1984) was recently released on Blu-Ray and for their review, they said and I quote "Footloose is an absolute disaster of a Blu-ray transfer."
Before switching to Blu-Ray, I'd check out a few reviews first, just to be on the safe side. If they rate it good or excellent, then definitely get it on Bu-Ray. I think it'll be worth it in the end.

I have completely stopped purchasing DVDs, and I don't really intend to buy one again unless it's something I absolutely have to have and it's simply not available on Blu-Ray.
DVDs display high quality standard definition images. Blu-Rays display high quality high definition images. If you're watching a DVD on an HDTV, you're really not using your TV to even half of its given potential.
Sure, Blu-Ray players upconvert DVDs to as near high-definition as possible, but after you've watched a few Blu-Rays, you'll undoubtedly notice a huge difference.
Even some of the softest transfers are still likely to look better on Blu-Ray than on DVD. Most of the major studios put extra care into making sure their Blu-Ray releases are of top quality. It's catalog titles that are rushed out that you may have to worry about, but they're at a point now where they're affordable enough to warrant buying in Blu anyway.
People's biggest detraction from Blu-Ray seems to be the price, but I'll tell you right now, I have never, ever paid retail for a Blu-Ray, and my Blu collection is over 300 at this point. There's plenty of deals, you just have to find them.
Will I ever convert my entire collection (700+) to Blu-Ray? Probably not. But I've already bought a lot of titles that I love and gotten rid of the DVD counterparts.

there are certain movies i will probably never buy on bluray... because they look worse... granted most of those movies are low budget and shot like crap anyway.. BUT i wont rebuy those ones on BD at all..
but as far as anything new that comes out... if i find it on sale when it first comes out , or catch it below retail after.. i get it on BD...

I think in a few years, things will be moving even more towards digital. To me it just seems pointless to bog myself down with tons of blu rays, especially at their cost, when I can get HD digital copies much easier, and cheaper.

I sold my ENTIRE DVD library about a year ago and switched over to blu-ray.
I haven't looked back.

I will never, ever move to the digital format unless I'm given absolutely no other choice. I can't justify spending money on something intangible when I can have a hard copy with artwork for virtually the same price in most cases.
I have the same exact issue with buying digital music. I'll purchase a digital single, but when the record is released, its physical copy or nothing, unless there's no other option.

I can't tell the difference in quality. I never really could either. The only reason I was wondering if I should buy them is because I think they might switch over to all Blu Rays soon.

But as I have gotten older, space is a premium in my household. A huge music and movie collection takes up a lot of space that I would rather not use for it. I realized that I'm not running a museum, and all that really matters is being able to watch the movie. Digital is so much more convienant, and allows me to keep thousands of CDs, music, books, and comic books on something the size of one DVD, and I can carry it all with me easily.

I convinced my friend by showing him the difference. it is a lot when looked at side by side.
Blu Rays are basically high quality digital copies and DVDs are low quality. DVD wont go anywhere for now because people dont mind spending less money and getting lower quality.
VHS phased out because digital media took over and VHS was analog. Every media player with a disk tray can still play DVDs so they will be around for the forseeable future.
But my opinion is better quality is better and you can find blu rays for really cheap now especially online so Id convert.
Also if you cant tell the difference, get you eyes checked and make sure its a 1080p TV. And Blu Rays is better than Digital IMO because its more reliable and plays smoother. its around 20 gigs of information. Streaming 20gigs of information digitally would be rather laggy and run up bandwith fast.

I doubt that I'll buy another DVD. I have almost 400 DVD's, but I haven't bought a DVD in a few years. My fiance and I are up to about 70 Blu-rays so far. I've even bought movies I own on DVD on Blu-ray.

It's surprising to me to hear people say they can't tell the difference. I used to wonder how much better it could be before I actually started watching them, but to me, it's like night and day.
Unless of course you're trying to watch a blu-ray on a SDTV, then I'd agree that the difference is moot.

There is a huge difference both in picture clarity and sound.

There's no much difference. Have you joined the HD era yet?

If you have the TV to go along with it then Blu Rays are essential

There's no much difference. Have you joined the HD era yet? Yes, but it's not really needed. Well at least for me, you don't need blu-ray when you have an HD tv. That's irrelevant and redundant.
