What do you guys think? I feel like Perfect, Dibiase and Rude hands down would have been outstanding Heel champions and should have held the strap at least once. Cases can be made for all of these guys really so tell us who you pick and why.

Paul Orndorff
He's not on the list to pick, but he is the one guy that should have beat Hogan for the belt.

I would say all of the above except Andre and Bossman. Those are some great talents there listed
I voted for Perfect though cos I am a huge fan.

The British Bulldog was not a top heel in the late 80's so he doesn't really count for this....he was very much a top tag team contender. I agree though during the mid 90's he should have held the strap.

In my opinion, the top heel of the 80's who should have held the WWF Championship is Piper
I know he wasnt around in the late 80's but for the first part of the decade, he was the man that should have beat Hogan.
As for the late 80's I Id have to go with Ted Dibiase. Both Dibiase and Piper were so good on the mic that they were truely hated in the ring. Having Piper hold the WWF Championship while in the Pit or Dibiase carrying it into a Limo or private Jet, would have been amazing spots.

Hennig would have been better suited for a title run in the early 90s.

Great topic.
I dont see Rude or Hennig as being ready for the title in the 80's....the early 90's yes.
Orndorff, Piper or DiBiase would be the only 3 i think should ave gotten a go with the belt...even then, only for a short run before a face reclaimed.

I went with Perfect because he is my favorite but without a doubt Piper and DiBiase are the greatest to never hold world titles and the fact that neither held the belt during their fueds with Hogan is beyond me.

We have to keep in mind, the WwF machine business model was built around a baby face champion....a quasi-racist Piper, a red neck Orndorff, or a multi million dollar man wouldnt have been as big sellers of lunch boxes, dolls, pencil sharpeners or bed sheets.
If they would get a run...i believe it would only be a short run, in order to build up sales of the next closed circuit event...but ratings and exposure was not an issue for them in the 80's. For making money, and creating an empire and characters, the WWF did it perfectly.
JCP with the NWA worked better with the heel champion, and the baby face's chasing, rather than the dominant face champion, with an assortment of heels challenging, and being vanquished.
And as been said, Orndorff seemed to be the only credible threat to Hogan. It was so early in Hogans run, the revolving door of big men monster heels being fed to Hogan had not strated yet...and the indestructible Hogan wasnt yet established. I was in Exhibition Stadium for the Big Event...and honestly felt the title would change hands....as soon as it didnt, i knew then, even as a 12 year old, that the "big wheels of Hulkamania" were not going to stop anytime soon...if Orndorff couldnt do it, Bundy, Studd, over the hill Andre, Akeem, Kamala..nobody would beat him.
